View Full Version : CHOICES OF - The Prestige or Pirates of Caribbean Black Pearl
I got a ps3 with the 5 free movies deal, I have 4 picked out from the catagories, and am trying to narrow down last catagory looking for advice from viewers who have seen the movies and can comment on the video transfer quality etc?
What I picked was
Stir of Echoes, Full Metal Jacket, The Patriot, The Last Waltz
WHat I have left to pick from are
The Prestige (never saw it), Wild Hogs(not a fav), Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of Black Pearl (never saw it)
I saw wild hogs not interested in seeing it again, thinking the pirates one for replay value, but never saw prestige either.... input on the blu-ray video quality the movie quality appreciated.
Bill :)
haulin oats 01-15-08, 02:25 PM The Prestige!
stumlad 01-15-08, 02:29 PM Pirates is a family flick. Prestige is more for people who are 15+. Both are good movies with great PQ.
Joon TV 01-15-08, 03:29 PM Prestige was fantastic, but you can never ever go wrong with Captain Jack Sparrow and the Pirates of the Caribbean.
wormraper 01-15-08, 03:32 PM go with pirates if you don't have it. the prestige was a good movie till the end where it just dive bombed.
Brajesh 01-15-08, 03:36 PM 'The Prestige' if you like something fresh and unpredictable. 'POTC' if you like the fun adventure-comedy type.
Jiffylush 01-15-08, 03:39 PM The Prestige is the better movie, but not sure about the replayability of it.
Hard to put the cat back in the bag if you know what I mean.
Pirates was fun, but hardly going to be on AFI's Top 100 any time soon.
The Prestige. Better movie and doesn't have any framing issues.
ahartig 01-15-08, 03:50 PM Prestige
Icemage 01-15-08, 03:58 PM I think The Prestige is the better of the two movies, but I certainly wouldn't blame anyone for picking PotC: CotBP as it is quite entertaining.
Pirates is the more visually stunning of the two, so if you're more into demo material, go that way, but for sheer movie quality there's no comparison - The Prestige all the way.
iceperson 01-15-08, 04:22 PM The Prestige is the better movie, but not sure about the replayability of it.
+1
Prestige is a good show, but I can't imagine watching it more than once.
iceperson 01-15-08, 04:23 PM The Prestige. Better movie and doesn't have any framing issues.
Lebronze 01-15-08, 04:46 PM Well, I watched the Prestige once, and really, thats about all you need in terms of viewings.
Whereas with POTC, everyone wants to watch it, I've probably seen it at least 6+ times and it doesnt get boring.
BladeofImmortal 01-15-08, 04:51 PM They both are amazing movies...I'd say wait for a BOGO deal from Amazon and get both. Sorry, glanced over that you could only pick one. I'd say if you have to pick one, flip a coin and just go with it. They both are great.
Conquest0511 01-15-08, 04:52 PM Prestige
fareedrizkalla 01-15-08, 05:11 PM Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Pirates. You won't regret it.
Deviation 01-15-08, 05:11 PM +1
Prestige is a good show, but I can't imagine watching it more than once.

The Prestige is better every time I see it and I notice new things every time I see it. Yes, the movie has a plot twist... but this one is more along the lines of Fight Club (notice new things every time) than The Sixth Sense (seen it once, never need to see it again).
Pirates is also a great movie, however. You can't go wrong with either pick.
bigmyke23 01-15-08, 05:14 PM Prestige, hands down! Come on now...Christian Bale is a god! :D
cdhender 01-15-08, 05:46 PM I need both of these movies in my collection. So whatever one you don't choose, just pick it up at a later time.

Have you seen the Blu-ray Tier thread?

I used that list to choose my free movies based upon picture quality. I figured that even if I didn't enjoy the movie, I could enjoy the PQ :).
hanginglimbs 01-15-08, 06:02 PM OP, i would reconsider the full metal jacket disc unless you are sure it is the re-release. The original one is not very offered and you'd want to upgrade it anyway.
Oh, and POTC :)
aviman33 01-15-08, 06:30 PM I thought the Prestige was awful. Pirates was no prize either, but at least you could view it multiple times. Prestige paled in comparison to the Illusionist.
Jon
Have to vote for Pirates. The Prestige wasn't even the best 19th century magician movie of last year... that would be The Illusionist.

FreddyC 01-15-08, 07:23 PM The Prestige. Love that movie! Freddy

pbmpharmacist 01-15-08, 07:37 PM Pirates... b/c you'll watch it more... Prestige is like a see once or twice movie
btf1980 01-15-08, 07:59 PM The Prestige by a mile.
magicconch 01-15-08, 08:05 PM Pirates, fun movie that can be watched again and again (the extras are nice also, as is the PQ)
genfuyung 01-15-08, 08:32 PM The prestige by a long shot. If your a fan of pirates you'll want to get the boxset down the road anyways.
Both are good movies, but I think Pirates has a greater rewatchability factor.
lgans316 01-15-08, 09:20 PM Tough choice.
Entertainment Value : POTC-1
Film Value : Prestige
WOW Factor : POTC-1
Thanks for the replies, I checked the Pirates box and will just rent prestige I guess, as for Full Metal Jacket, nobody from these deals has chimed in yet to say which version it is that they are sending hummm, I didn't care too much for Superman, Swordfish was decent but not so sure I would watch it again, FMJ I would watch again but if its the first yucky version I will probably not even open it - just trade or sell it on craigslist.
Bill :)
sroberts1220 01-15-08, 10:17 PM The Prestige for me as well.
I found this page very helpful not only in reviews of the movies but also of the blu ray versions quality
http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Bundles/BDA_Renews_Five_Free_Blu-ray_Discs_Offer/1031
Shufflefield 01-15-08, 10:36 PM Based only on the movie and not PQ/AQ since I have neither yet - I would pick (and did) Batman vs. Wolverine.

That site can be unreliable at times with their PQ reviews. But as most others have indicated, Pirates is probably the better buy in terms of replayability and entertainment. Prestige was a pretty good movie but if I were going to watch either movie a 2nd time it would be Pirates.
And while Pirates can be enjoyed by the whole family, there are some who wouldn't want to watch Prestige because it's a movie with a bit more depth. So when you're entertaining it's also a better choice. Lastly, I'm not sure about this but because the Pirates is a 2-disc edition I'm assuming it has more extra features, which, even if you don't watch them, gives the movie more value.
Brandon
I would take The Prestige in SD over POTC in HD
The Prestige, no doubt about it.
Pirates COTBP without a doubt
( and I will go as far as to say - Dead Man's Chest is one of the greatest flicks of all time . )
bplewis24 01-16-08, 10:36 AM FYI:
On Rotten Tomatoes Prestige is 75%; PotC: CotbP is 79%.
Brandon
lgans316 01-16-08, 08:59 PM In terms of Story and twists POTC doesn't even hold a candle next to Prestige.
However for family and HD pop POTC is highly recommended.
Have they sent out any of the defective Pirates disks? The framing issue might discourage people from selecting Pirates.
You can get the Prestige for free if you finish Blu-ray training. My suggestion you should get the Pirates of Caribbean Black Pearl.
