I picked up my 705 yesterday along with a pair of Klipsch RB-61's for front L/R. I only have the two speakers upfront for now as my budget will allow more speakers will be purchased.

I have cheap RCA cables to my receiver from 360, directv box, and HD-A35. and video going from each unit to the tv. HDMI cables are on there way.

Is stero mode the best to be in with only 2 speakers? Also to get it pretty loud the volume level is about 8~10 range as i cycle through all of the modes. is that normal level? would the cheap RCA cable cause this.

pure audio mode will probably sound the best for 2 channel listening as none of the signal is being processed by the rx'r. you can also adjust your sound/eq levels etc in the rx'r main menu. add some cheapy comp monitor speakers for the rear as temp and you can enjoy surround sound until you can afford additional speakers in the future. center channel and sub should be your next purchases. invest in some good quality cables for optimal sound.

btw, check in the main menu for speaker sensitvity in ohms - 4, 6, or 8 and adjust db levels/ohms according to what your speakers can handle. there's also an audessey configuration/setup to optimise sound but this is for systems with more than 2 speakers. check the owners onkyo owners threads for more useful tips and read the manual when in doubt. its a good rx'r with alot of bells and whistles and will take some time to get the most features out of it. enjoy!

Do you still recommend using Pure Audio mode for a 2.1 system? I'm not too sure how Pure Audio works.

only for 2 channel mode. I don't believe that setting outputs to your sub. I would use stereo mode with 2.1.
