I recently started using Gamefly so I've been trying out a lot of games. Just in this last week I've received several emails from EA saying that I "registered" games with them after i played them on the 360. WTF is up with that? why the hell is Live even telling EA I'm playing their game? let alone giving them the email address associated with my live account so they can harass me through email.

I dunno how others feel about this, but it's really pissing me off.

Hi gamertag!

Thank you for registering Medal of Honor Airborne(TM)

Here’s your gameplay tip:
Wait until you're low on ammunition before using the supply drop crates. It is a one-time fill-up.

Remember, your EA Member Account automatically stores your information, making the game registration process quick and easy. Even better, you could receive a free cheat code or game hint, or an opportunity to receive special offers on EA games with each game you register.

I really don't want to "register" a rented game with them, hell I didn't even like the game.

now I get a new email today asking me to "link your Gamertag to your EA Master Account", F that.

Is there some option I can set somewhere on the 360 to stop this? I already clicked the link to set email preferences on one of the emails, but everything is already unchecked so I shouldn't be receiving any emails from them already.

Sorry if this came off a little heated, I'm just sick of these big companies getting more and more invasive.

If I recall correctly -- and someone please feel free to come in and set the record straight -- EA wants exclusive control over server and user data for its Live-enabled games. The only way EA would be convinced to publish games that supported Xbox Live was if MS got down on its knees and conceded on these terms (this was back on the original Xbox, mind you, but it has carried through to the days of the 360 and Live Gold). The follow-up e-mails are in line with EA's general policy to try to annoy users as frequently as possible.

Typically (and this has worked pretty well for me) the best way to avoid these e-mails is to avoid placing an EA game in your 360 at all.

i played the demo of MOH airborne but i didn't rent it, that was probably the problem. hope that made sense.

I'm thinking of going with this work around as well :)

if you register any EA game it saves your email address so you dont have to do it for every game. well thats my experience with them. i registered FIFA 07 so i could play online and when i got madden 08 and FIFA 08 they automatically registered me so i didnt have to do it again.

it's crazy, it takes hardly any time and if pushing it is that irritating to you then you have bigger problems than video game companies

You must be joking? Press the friggin' delete button in your email account.

What does "dunno" mean?

I have played several EA games and this has never happened to me. Are you certain this is a MS/XBL issue? Don't you think that, perhaps, this is a Gamefly issue? They have your email address. Did you already register at EA.com?

Third, folks are jumping off bridges because of the demise of HD-DVD and you show the same emotion because EA emailed you requesting linking your GT to EA??? Yikes.

dub273 is correct. EA didn't start porting and creating games for the Xbox until MS gave them this flexibility. Dean Takahashi, in his last book wrote much about this. I think MS tried to play tough (which is why EA didn't support the Xbox until late in it's life) and finally gave in to EA.

EA supported xbox, just not xbox live. That was the turning point where this stuff started.

What does "dunno" mean?I dunno.

I have played several EA games and this has never happened to me.It usually doesn't happen until you try to access the multiplayer component of any given game. I had C&C3 for some time before I accidentally entered the online skirmish mode, and it wasn't long before I got my e-mail thanking me for "registering".

Are you certain this is a MS/XBL issue?More accurately, it's an MS/XBL/EA issue. And it's quite real.

I guess I haven't played EA games in a while now. I just realized that.

it just bothers me, most places have an option on if you want to allow them (xbox live in this case) to share your information with 3rd parties/affiliates. I always uncheck this. If I want someone to have my email address I'll give it to them myself.

I don't care what kind of deal Microsoft and EA have, EA is still a 3rd party to me connecting to xbox live. I wish Microsoft would have been kind enough not to give them my email address and gamertag.

the email is definitely from EA, EA@email.ea.com to be exact. The emails include my gamertag so it's obvious the information came through live. Gamefly doesn't know my gamertag. Also I never used the multiplayer aspect of either game so it's not from that.

*edit*
I just went to the EA site to see if I had an account there from the past, requesting my password gives me "No EA account was found with the email address on file. Please create an EA account." So they got my email from Live, not from a previous account with them.

Of course EA got your email from XBL.

Some time ago, Microsoft had to open it's network enough to allow other companies to run their own game servers. Companies like EA would not allow MS to run the server for them. So when you connect to an EA server through one of their games, it has to transfer enough information to EA so when you connect, it knows who you are.

Isn't this an awfully silly thing to be upset about? Like it was said, if you don't like it, don't play EA games. But if you want to play online, you have to go by the rules of who made the game and who runs the servers.

There are plenty of other reasons to dislike EA, but allowing them to know who you are when you connect to their servers shouldn't be something you should even care about.

First off I fail to see why EA needs my email address to provide any service related to xbox live.

Second I'm aggravated that EA would assume that simply putting a game in my console means I want to register it with them.

But I can see now that most here could care less if there personal information gets passed from company to company, so I guess there's no point in posting further on this.

It's not entirely clear what kind of info gets sent from MS to third-party EA -- Personal info? Name? Address? Zip code? -- and it's not unfair to question whether you really want that kind of data passed along from faceless corporation to faceless corporation.

EA finally came forth and made a public statement about this in 2006 (http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/26568), but as you read the comments, you can see that other users bring up valid points about what such sharing means to you and your privacy.

Those of you saying "just delete the e-mail" -- are you really considering all the implications of being laissez-faire about your personal information? 'Cuz I don't really think you are.

Thanks for the link, seems I'm over a year late in noticing this :)
