View Full Version : THE ROCK won't play on SAMSUNG 1400 with newest firmware
captaincelluloid 01-16-08, 02:03 AM Anybody else having problems with Buena Vista's THE ROCK not playing on Samsung 1400 with latest firmware?
I keep getting the DISC WILL NOT PLAY screen.
I've had no problems with other recent Buena Vista discs CON AIR, RATATOUILLE, CARS et al.
Cleaned it, rebooted, powered down, ejected etc etc.
Any tricks to make it play?
Or just a bad disc?

pettit03 01-16-08, 02:16 AM There are a couple of scenes that lock up my player about 45 mins into it. But it does play once I skip those scenes.
DM2006RI 01-16-08, 09:57 AM I feel sorry for anyone who bought a 1400. I had enough with the player after a couple of weeks and it's blatantly obvious it's still a lemon, no matter how many firmware updates they've released.
Played fined for me with the exception of a few video/audio drops out about 18 minutes into the movie.
Unfortunately I just bought one bases on a good professional review in home theater mag. I unpacked it and could not play Live Free of Die Hard, even after doing a firmware upgrade. Can someone please point me to a player that plays Blu Ray movies? Is this how all players are? Is it a Blu Ray version issue, or is it just a Samsung thing?

Live Free or Die Hard plays fine with this player. Did you do the update through the player's Ethernet port?
The firmware version that you need to have on your player is 1.2, also called 071113.01_XAA. If you don't have this version either download from Samsung website your self or keep updating from player's ethernet port until it indicates no more update. And yeah, it is a Samsung thing.

Return the 1400 and get a PS3. The PS3 plays EVERYTHING. If you MUST have a standalone, then the Panny BD30 is probably your best bet.

I don't know if this trick will work with the 1400, but when this happens on my 1000, I take another blu ray disc (doesn't matter which one) and let it load. Once that disc loads, eject the disc and then load the problem disc. Works on the few problem discs I have. Why I don't know, but it does.

pioneer 95 plays BD beautifully.

Give the PS3 or Panny BD30 a shot.

Thanks for the info. I use a universal IR remote, so I dont want to use the PS3 Bluetooth remote. My DVD player runs on Panasonic codes, so I want to avoid having a second panasonic disc player. Do you know if Sony blu ray players have any "no play" issues or other reasons not to buy one?

Are you sure the player is runing firmware 1.2?
By the way I don't have the Panasonic player but users have indicated that there is a way to change the remote code so it doesn't interfere with other Panasonic codes.

You call this playing fine?

I guess I wasn't the only one thinking that.
tutelary 01-18-08, 07:23 PM Does ANYTHING play on this piece of crap? All I see are threads about how horrible it is.
You call this playing fine?
Yes. The Blu-ray disc played on my 1400. I'm using firmware 1.2 that is why I asked if he is running firmware 1.2 I'm not aware of any discs compatibility issues with this player as far as the player refusing to play the discs is concern.
No problems with my PS3. The Rock is AWESOME Movie!!! Watched it twice already.
and for those of you wondering: no problems with ANY discs on any one of my three HD DVD players!

You maybe thinking of the BD-P1200 or the newly released BD-UP5000. No that I'm saying the 1400 is a good player but at least it has been able to play all the new releases so far (at least for me with FW1.2). The are three remaining big issues with this player which are:
1. Broken 24hz output which doesn't affect me at the moment. It used to work but Samsung broke it in one of the firmware updates.
2. Can't leave a movie paused for more than 5 minutes or the player will shut off. Who knows if they ever going to fix that.
3. With some movies I get two to three short video/audio drop outs usually within the first 15 minutes into the movie.

cambrian 01-18-08, 08:50 PM man the samsung 1400 is such a terrible player.
Glad I have the ps3. I could live w/o bitstream for now.

What is scary is that it is their best player  not in terms of picture quality, 1200 is better on that, but on dics playability.
Oh by the wait there will be a new firmware coming http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9854056-1.html
Problems with this player are INCREDIBLY exaggerated. I've had no problems playing any movie on this player to this point. Update your firmware properly.

I agree with you. I think people are confusing this player with the BD-P1200.

I third it....i do not experience these problems with my 1400 either
akosoft 01-19-08, 06:05 AM Dont get it, never had a single hick up with my 1400 on all so know problem discs known to date... knock on wood :)
So, some have a problem with one model, makes this a bad player? I mean, i read problems for all models here. Including the Ps3 and the 1400 has sold a lot.
palofex 01-19-08, 09:18 AM This player is more sensitive to fingerprints than the PS3 i have used but it plays everything. I have no problems with it at all or it would not be here, There are no audio drop outs and no discs it will not play. I do sadly believe there may not be the qc one might want in a player but if you get a good one it works fine. I also can use the PS3 if there are problems that develop. I am awaiting the bd live players this year to make a decision. I know I hate a player that plays everything and allows me to play the DTS MA tracks with my Denon. / sarcasm off
captaincelluloid 01-19-08, 01:38 PM THE OP UPDATE
Got a second copy of THE ROCK and it plays.
Thanks for all the tips and input
Thanks for the tip on the fingerprint issue . . . had a MAJOR problem playing DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE and cleaning the disc solved it. Alas, cleaning did not help the problems with SUNSHINE
Not sure if it is a "piece of crap" but the 1400 is not as
stable as my trusty Toshiba HD-A1 . . . I have had a few problems with the A-1 but MANY more with the 1400 . .
All in all for $ 149 [ thank you Amazon ] I can't complain.
. . . and I MUST say that I have had problems with
EVERY single Fox disc. . EVERY one.
Is there a YELL AT FOX thread somewhere?
If this is what "winning" the format war means to Fox -- and others -- then I fear we shall suffer for the loss of real competition from HD-DVD

I have a PS3 and haven't had any problems with any BD discs Fox or otherwise. (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy did give me some color problems on the old Firmware 1.0 - but quickly fixed w/ an update.)
That said, I think it's very unfortunate that it seems the entire next-gen DVD format is so utterly reliant on this one video game system - with the expensive stand-alone players seeming to fall well behind in terms of usability and reliability.
I agree about the HD-A1. It's certainly a slow / clunky behemoth, but it's always performed well for me. I'll definitely miss HD DVD if it goes away totally and fear what Sony will try to do to the market from such a dominant position.

Played bunches of Fox BD ,and have had no problems whatsoever.(Panny BD10)

It turns out the firmware update via network did not work properly. I did the download and burn to CD option, which appeared to work. The player takes a long time to think about things and gives not real feedback about what is happening. I was not expecting such a beta experience. So LFODH now plays, which is good.
My complaints at this point are 24 Hz seems to create a dropped frame or two every few minutes, but has less motion judder than 60 Hz. Also, maybe Spiderman 3 and LFODH have weird color aesthetics, but the blacks are crushed more than any DVD or cable HD I have seen. Thumbs up for sharpness and detail, but I wish I were more impressed by the overall picture in dark scenes.

Thanks for the tip. I did a firmware upgrade that seemed to solve my remaining problems. It was the one where I exchanged the Samsung BP1400 for the Panasonic DMP BD30. It worked out of the box, loads movies in half the time (1 min vs 2), 24P works without hiccups, and the color and image contrast are slightly more natural. It costs a bit more, but at least it works like an appliance should. It also has a few more picture and sound controls that may be nice. It has 3 remote code options, which allowed my to get my universal remote to talk to it separately from my existing DVD player.

My 1400 wouldn't pay LFODH, so I did the ethernet update thinking it would go from the current version( I had 1.0 loaded since it works on 24fps) to the latest version, but no...it had to go to 1.1...and then I had to go to 1.2.
So, if you previously had Firmware 1.0 and you did the ethernet update...you probably ended up with Firmware 1.1...which won't play LFODH either.

You have hit the nail on the head, sir;
Without HD-DVD around to force Sony / Blu-Ray / Fox et al to
compete and improve quality control I too fear very bad things could happen.
Without the presence of HD-DVD we would likely still have $1700
Blu-Ray stand-alones playing [ poorly ] low rate MPEG-2 transfers on BD-25 discs with no advanced audio codecs and no PIP or interactivity.
Looks like we'll all have to remain vigilant . . . . and complain and complain often to Sony and the studios . . . especially Fox.
It is apparent that there is a wide spread mastering / replication "glitch" on the SUNSHINE disc. I believe FOX owes us a re-master or a replacement copy program

Actually I don't think they're exaggerated at all. Updated the hell out of my 1400, still had all kinds of problems -- to date it's the single worst player from either format I've encountered by a WIDE margin.
Anyone that has this player ought to look at swapping it out, ebaying it, etc. and going with the PS3 or the Panasonic BD30. You will regret it if you don't.

I think i will wait till the BD50 comes out or another machine with 2.0. When will we see a player with zero issues? Did it take this long with dvd?
tai4de2 01-22-08, 09:25 PM It is apparent that there is a wide spread mastering / replication "glitch" on the SUNSHINE disc.
Well, I know at least some copies of Sunshine were not affected, because I watched the movie on my 1400 without incident. I watch over HDMI in 1080i (because of the 1080p/24 bug, but my display is a Pioneer Kuro and processes it back to 24p), and bitstream audio to a Denon 3808.
FWIW the 1400 is in a stack of optical disk players in their own cabinet (the receiver is in the neighboring cabinet, with only a small round hole between the2 cabinets for running cables). The unit is therefore well isolated from any heat sources, and moderately well isolated from sources of vibration. Wonder if that makes a difference like some here speculate? Especially the vibration -- maybe peoples' sub-woofers are rocking the living hell out of the 1400, causing issues? I used to have my equipment stack right next to my sub, and could swear that I had more problems with BD and HD DVD than I do now that I've moved it all into cabinets...
The bass on this title was so kicking in glorious full DTS-HD MA that it exposed a loose can light in the ceiling.
sweetvar26 01-25-08, 02:28 AM I got a problem with Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End. I just bought it last week on Amazon.com and it doesn't read on my PS3 with the latest firmware. The same is the case on my room mate's PS3 as well. It just doesn't read and there is nothing to click to play the movie.
Anyone else had a problem like this ?? Help would be appreciated !
wallijonn 01-25-08, 09:53 PM It sounds like you got a bad copy. Send it back for an exchange.
tcfiero 01-29-08, 12:29 AM I just finished watching The Rock on my 1400 with fw 1.2 and it worked fine. I have had some minor problems with other movies on this player. Slight skipping. I rewind about 30 seconds and replay and the skip goes away. I am currently upgrading to the newest fw right now and I just bought a PS3 tonight. I will pick it up tomorrow.
