Blazing Saddles

Well, I guess Superbad or Bad Santa wouldn't be up their alley.

I second Blazing Saddles, or the Eddie Murphy titles Coming to America or Trading Places, unless you want to pony up and import the Japanese edition of The Producers (the recent musical; Universal owns the rights to that in the US). I really can't think of any others.

I'd suggest Kung-fu hustle, it's funny and it's not exactly cutting edge comedy!

For 62-69 Superbad would not be a good choice. Maybe Bad Santa, but even that is stretching it. I would say Wild Hogs.

Agreed, it isn't a movie for the ages, but it was quite entertaining in an easily accessible way.

Unlike Superbad which I love, but I think some people may be offended by.

Definately Wild Hogs!

+1. Among all the titles this is probably the only one that does not have any "toilet humor" and that's why it will be better for your target audience.

Definately Wild Hogs!

Wild Hogs is without a doubt one of the worst movies I have seen in the past couple years, and I have seen a lot of movies (many of the bad ones being subjected to watch by my girlfriend, Wild Hogs included).

All of these movies SUCK!!! Well, Blazing Saddles might get them (isnt it HD only), it's old and might have appealed to them in their wheelhouse while in their 40's... but Night at the Museum? Come on! Wild Hogs? Christ, are you in their will? Do you wanna still be?

Someone almost 70 is going to maybe want some vintage comedy, you might get away with a title like Midnight Run or Grumpy Old Men, something geared toward older audiences. Superbad? Jeez... is Caddyshack out (HD only again)?

Better to upconvert a regular title of a good comedy than foist friggin' Superbad on some old unsuspecting retirees...

World's Fastest Indian. Great movie. Not exactly a comedy but does have humor mixed in but would be right up this age groups alley. I enjoyed it.

It's probably WB, so dual format. I just picked it up on BD from Amazon during the new promotion.

 As a 64-year old, 59-year moviegoer who has seen many, many more films than many of the posters on this thread have obviously had enough viewing time alive to have don, I'd like to say (with all due respect) that the "suggestions" by most posters on this thread are almost insultingly ridiculous! "Wild Hogs," indeed! Crap!

For the moment, I'll vote for "Superbad" as the funniest comedy to come out on Blu-ray so far! Those words and sentiments have been around since Shakespeare!

But since Warner has gone "Blu," it's time they released a true "classic" comedy on Blu-ray-- the brilliant Stanley Kramer farce, "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World."

And for what it's worth, I can't believe the OPs of this thread were the least bit serious. I think the joke is on those of you who posted.

I'll read, appreciate and learn from many of your comments about the "new" technologies.
But I'll skip your evaluations of what is "comedy" for members of my generation!

Thanks, anyway!

PS-- "Letters from Iwo Jima" indeed!
May you be forced to endure multiple viewings of the upcoming stinker, "Meet the Spartans." (I'm an extra in it, by the way. Don't look for me. I'm in a toga, hiding behind another pay-ee so as not to be identified in such a piece of crap!) :D

You might want to read the original post again. He specifically asked what was available on Blu-ray. If the rest of us were going to start quoting classic comedies that were available on DVD (which has some 49,000+ titles available) we all might been able to come up with something as clever and witty as you.

I am also an AARP card carrying, Social Security collecting movie fan. In my opinion, Superbad is exactly that. If you came to my house, with the grandchildren, I hope, and popped that in my BD player, I'd wonder what had become of the younger generation.

Does it say something about BD, and the studios in particular, that we can't really come up with a good comedy we all agree would make Grandpa laugh out loud? Are movie ticket sales and DVD sales down partially because the movies are rather poor?

No, it says more about the demographic of Blu-Ray movie collectors than anything else. It's my main problem with HDM at the moment.

Too much loud, "3-D pop" trash instead of real classics restored to the best possible home version. The constant "Do old movies benefit from HD?" and "Such and such is too grainy" threads on this forum are just proof of that.

Warner has thankfully gone against the trend with the Kubrick releases, Deliverance, Blade Runner, and several other fantastic releases. Actually, the main reason I went HD DVD only before I went purple was to get away from the PS3 gamer generation. I'm only 28, but the stupidity of my generation and younger on quality of movies is appalling.

It's also because some people think comedies don't benefit from HD. We've mostly been getting day and date comedies, most of which aren't good movies (IMHO). Universal is the only studio that seems committed to releasing catalog comedies on a regular basis, but their titles have really been hit or miss.

I think the problem, IMHO, is there just haven't been a lot of great comedies released lately.

Comedy is also awfully subjective. A lot of people love Borat and Superbad. I'd give you 2:1 that I'd not like them as much. I'll watch both, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

The last movie to make me laugh out loud was The Simpsons.

I'd second Life of Brian and Blazing Saddles.. My father-in-law loved Wild Hogs so I guess that's sort of an endorsement.

The whole "Do old movies benefit from HD" argument is a non-argument. We've been crippled by SD for years. Watching any film based movie on SD is nothing but a cheap compromise no matter how high quality the DVD is.

The big problem here is everyone has different taste in movies. If he gave us some examples of what movies the gentlemen in question like it would be a much easier question.

I know my 60 year old father loved 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad, and The Heartbreak kid. He is not above toilet humor like some people seem to be (my mom liked those too, except for Superbad). He also enjoys Coming to America and Trading Spaces. However there are many funny movies that I love that he does not, like Billy Madison, and Dumb and Dumber.

I looked over the list of Blu-Ray Movies that I've seen, and realized there were very few good comedies.

The only ones that this 59-year-old considered very good are:

Simpsons Movie
Trading Places
A Christmas Story
Daddy's Little Girls

Appreciation of comedy is, of course, an individual thing. Your mileage may vary.

Touch call... comedies are few and far between in HD... and most of them are off the off the cuff humor that is targeted towards younger people and popular today.

Not sure if they would go for it, but I get a kick out of a lot of animated films and they are some of the best looking blu-rays of course. Cars, Ratatouille, Happy Feet, etc. Other wise I'd say that Trading Places and Coming to America are safe bets. Hitch may be a decent option.

I'd say it all depends on the people, not the age necessarily. My dad Who would be 67 today if he were still with us) loved the American Pie movies, Something about Mary, Dumb and Dumber, etc.

There are few comedies to choose from on either format, because people tend to be more likely to buy movies full of special effects and explosions to watch in HD. Comedies, some people reason, don't benefit from HD.

I disagree, but that's beside the point - I find most comedies these days so dirty or offensive that I wouldn't watch them anyway :(

I would also recommend Stranger Than Fiction, good movie, and it is very funny. I prefer this type of 'implied' or 'subtle' comedy where the humor comes from the characters personalities and actions as opposed to people just making jokes back and forth the whole movie.

Intelligent humor! A little bit of romantic comedy as well though. I did laugh out loud at this one and I think I will pop it into the PS3 tonight!
