View Full Version : help needed setting up optical sound
Belkin54g 01-16-08, 05:14 PM i have a ps3, a sony sxrd hidef tv, and an old compact av system dav-s500.
i hooked up my ps3 to the tv via hdmi and get sound and video. however, the sound isnt that great and i would prefer to hook the sound up with my old compact av system dav-s500 dvd player with surround sound speakers. i connected my ps3 to the dvd player via optical cable . .but im not getting any sound. i have switched the settings of the ps3 to receive audio from optical cable (tried both linear and bitstream) but im not getting any sound. what am i doing wrong? any help would be appreciated.

tokerblue 01-16-08, 08:02 PM Are you sure your receiver/DVD player has optical inputs? It isn't listed as having them.
Inputs: Composite x 1 • Analog Audio x 1

A reviewer on Amazon complains about the same thing.

"General comments: I love the Sony DAV-S550 DVD home cinema system. I have had it for 3 years, and now I am only upgrading the DVD player and keeping the Sony home cinema as the sound part via a optical cable"
the opticas ports were plugged with a black piece that u have to remove . so maybe thats why its not listed in the specs but its defeintely there.

perhaps you have the PS3 video hooked up to VIDEO-1 input?
the Optical audio in is at VIDEO-2 so the PS3 video has to go in VIDEO-2

i connected the ps3 via hdmi to the back of my tv on "video 7" and i hooked up my optical cable to the "video 2" slot in the above diagram. i dont have any video cables going to the dvd player . just teh audio through the optical cable . .
stupid question but did you change your source input on your dvd/receiver to the optical input? probably labeled as "Digital In"
I have a similar issue. I want to hook up my PS3 to a samsung LN-T405H through HDMI.
But, I don't know how to handle the audio. I want to be able to pass the audio through my yamaha receiver. The receiver, however, does not have hdmi. It does have optical in though.
So my guess, belkin, is that you would connect the PS3 to the tv through hdmi and maybe use the tv's "digital out" connection to send it to your receiver.
Would this work? Will the tv pass the audio through its digital out connection to a receiver's digital in connection? If so, hopefully Belkin's tv has digital out.

just as an observer and reader of this post, i would say that this would work. the tv will just pass the audio signal from any source you are currently viewing and your receiver will just decode it.
just fyi, some people have reported a "lip-syncing" problem using this method. if you get it, maybe you could just connect your ps3 directly to your receiver?

Very few TVs pass multichannel audio from other components through the optical output. It's there to send DD from the set's internal tuner when using an off-air antenna or a direct cable feed without a set top box. On most TVs, audio from other sources is downmixed to two channels.

Hey, tronn, I ended up going with exactly what you suggested - connected the ps3 directly to my receiver with an optical cable. The results were fantastic. I haven't even bothered passing it through the tv, so can't say if I would've encountered sync problems. But your suggestion just seemed more logical :p
I've never used a digital audio connection before, on this receiver (a yamaha RX-V359) because I never thought I would benefit from it. Boy was I wrong. Dolby Digital is definately an improvement.
Thanks for the advice.

Ah, never would have thought of that, thanks for the info BIslander and tronn.
