View Full Version : OPPO DV-980H - Divx/Xvid via USB
Hello AVS Forum,
I'm considering an Oppo DV-980H.
1) Any problems playing Divx and Xvid AVIs over USB? I would be using either a USB flash drive (like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227274) or a Compact Flash card (like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208298)/USB 2.0 adpater.
2) Is there a file size limit? Some of my Divx/Xvid AVIs are well over 1GB; some are pushing 3GB.
3) Is there a resolution limit?
TIA>

I've tested it with a thumb drive and it works. Others are using harddrives; check the 980 forum for details. The drive must be formatted FAT, not NTFS. There is a limit of 700 files the player can see. I recall something about a file size limt; 2GB?
Resolution is limited to standard def: 720x480 (or 720x576?)

-BillI searched this thread http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=879341&highlight=980 but only saw one poster mention file sizes and in one post they said they played multiple files in the 2.5-3GB range but in another post they said they had trouble with large Divx/Xvid files, which doesn't help me much so I posted this question here. I think the 2GB limit you recall is regarding FAT16 limits, but I'd be using FAT32 so that shouldn't matter.

Contact Oppo support and ask them. They're usually quite prompt.

Regarding Xvid/Divx playback from the USB drive, does anybody know if it is possible to fast forward or rewind a movie?
tommyboy1970 01-17-08, 06:23 PM there is a 2gb limit through USB
my only complaint about this player
there is a 2gb limit through USB
my only complaint about this playerIs this a hardware limitation or is this something that can be changed via a firmware upgrade?
Neuromancer 01-17-08, 06:40 PM Hardware has been designed around FAT16/32, which has file size limitations of 2GB.

I've only tried a USB thumb drive but IIRC you can FF or REW up to 32x.

I do. One of them (4,66 GB) is in my HD. This is avi file (Jarre concert) and I did not made this :D
Well, I went ahead and purchased a 980H.
Does this thing support DVD+RWs? So far all DVD+RWs I've tried (3 or 4 w/a Divx/Xvid AVI & one w/PAL DVD video) have resulted in a "No Disc" msg.
Update: I tried burning NTSC DVD video to a DVD+RW and that didn't work either. Plays retail DVDs fine. Plays AVIs from USB thumb drive fine.

The only +RW media I've tested is: "PHILIPS/041 (Philips DVD+RW)" and it works.

I dont have any other brands.
BigJPDC 05-15-08, 04:29 PM To continue this thread, I am looking for guidence on the media and file types supported with the USB interface. It seems hit or miss and I am trying to put together trailer clips in DTS to show off my theater system. For example, the Clone Wars HD trailer from rottentomatoes does not appear in the listing - is it the wmv extension or the file encoding which is making it invisible?
VOB's work great but it sucks to take time to download and copy trailers to the stick and then only see a couple of them when inserted into the Oppo.
thanks for any assistance, love this player.

No WMV or Quicktime.
mpg and divx/xvid are supported in standard definition resolution only. I think the max is 720x480.

Mpeg-1 and mpeg-2. Divx is the only mpeg-4 format supported.

callous 05-15-08, 07:36 PM If you find problems with playing Xvid/divx files, as in somewhat random stutters while playing them off a usb drive, then change the CLUSTER size to higher than what you're using.
I experimented around and found that a higher cluster size removes most if not all the stuttering for usb playback. I was using 8k, changing to 16k seems to have fixed it.
Oppo is aware of this, and have forwarded this issue to their engineers.
pe2900guru 06-12-08, 01:22 AM I burned three VOB movies of 4GB each to a 16GB flash drive and it played perfect. The 980H upconverted the movies to 1080p and I could play 5.1 AC3 and DTS. I used DVD-Shrink to make 4GB single file VOB's. So I bought a 4TB USB external drive to make a movie server. Cool right. Well you can't use a file bigger than 4GB on a FAT32 drive. 4GB movies max, no problem. But in Windows XP 32-bit max drive size is 2TB. So I now have to use the RAID-5 w/spare setting and get 1862GB's from my big a$$ 4TB drive so XP can mount it. Ahhh! That will still get me 465+ movies per drive if the OPPO 980H will use a 1862GB drive. I'll let you guys know if it works after I wait 6hrs for this drive to format and start shrinking DVD's for weeks. Wish me luck...

You might first want to look at the Oppo's limitation on the number of files per drive. Also be aware that the Oppo has to scan and catalog the ENTIRE drive each time it is connected.
Neuromancer 06-12-08, 12:19 PM 700 instances (object and folders). If you go beyond this limitation, files may no longer appear and will not be accessible.
rjk2002 07-24-08, 08:06 AM I've had the DV-980H for several months and I'm very happy with the quality of DVD playback. I've been much less happy with the playback of XVID/DIVX files with the player. I have a large collection of XVID/DIVX files and many of them will not play on the DV-980H (frequent pauses and eventually the player just freezes requiring me to completely power the unit off to recover). I've tried the same .avi files burned onto a DVD-R, using a USB key, or external USB drive and they all freeze at the same spot so it's not a media problem. My $50 Chinese player would playback all of these files with no problems.
After a lot of web searching for information and local tests, I have some feedback for other users of the OPPO DV-980H and answers for some other questions in this thread.
1) I've used TDK DVD-RW, HP DVD+RW, Sony DVD+R, Verbatim DVD-R, San-Disk Cruzer USB 2GB, and a Western Digital 100 GB USB drive with no problems (the OPPO player USB port will power this USB drive with no problems).
2) MPEG-1 video files play fine on the OPPO DVD player.
3) I have quite a few XVID video files that I created with AutoGK V2.45 and most will NOT play on the OPPO player. They all had a wide variety of resolutions, data rates, fps, and MP3 audio data rates (generally data rates under 1000 kbps seemed to play better than data rates above 1000 kbps). After reading about playback issues with Packet Bitstream, Bvop, Qpel, and GMC settings in Wikipedia (MPEG-4 part 2) for many DVD players, I started to play around with those settings and other encoder applications.
4) I've started using AutoGK V2.48b with the Stand-Alone Support enabled for the ESS Standalone Chipset and those files (1 CD size, XVID codec, 640x352 pixels, MP3 CBR 128 kbps) are playing fine on the OPPO.
5) I've also used SUPER V2008.build32 to re-encode a few non-working files with good success (Container: avi, Output video codec: DivX (and then select XVID when you encode the files), Output Audio Codec: mp3).
6) I've been able to fast forward/reverse at 2x for most .avi files, but often if I try 4x or higher the playback will freeze and I have to power the player off to recover.
All of these files play with no problems on my Creative Zen Vision:M and I really wish I could just play all these files on my OPPO DVD player without all this aggravation (just like I used to do with my Chinese Haier before the power supply died). Oh well, at least the normal DVD playback looks great from this player!
Neuromancer 07-24-08, 12:13 PM QPEL and GMC are not supported for XviD. If these are enabled, you will not get smooth playback with these encodes.
QPEL and GMC is supported for DivX.
callous 07-24-08, 07:40 PM Use a program called gspot to see exactly what type of encoding options was used on the videos that had issues.
GMC is bad news on most players. Qpel seems ok for xvid and divx though.
rjk2002 07-30-08, 07:33 AM Here's a good example of what was happening (used Super Multimedia Analysis Box for data).

This second .avi file is simply the first one converted by the Super application (build 32 from 8 July 2008) with Stream Copy on the Audio and the DivX Output Video Codec (selected XVID for the codec when the encoding pop-up comes up). The biggest change is BVOP is now NO. This file plays perfectly on the OPPO DV-980H:

By the remarks on most of the forums, I thought I was the only one with this problem. I'm coming from a Philips DVP-642. Only the odd file wouldn't work on it, and mostly because of quarter-pixels. I had to fix all kinds of files in order to view them on my 980H. The picture quality IS much better, I have to admit on the Oppo.
I have figured out most of the issues, but there is still a problem with the odd file. I think the b-frames are what's to blame here. I have different files with b-frames: some play, some don't (well, they freeze after a few min). I tried re-encoding a file I had which was giving me issues, and I removed b-frames. The new version works flawlessly.
If Oppo can get this problem sorted, I will start loving my player again. If not, then I am fairly dissapointed with my purchase of a dvd player which was touted for being able to play "anything you throw at it".
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but just wanted to throw my $0.02 in. Just in case someone has issues with their files.
As a fix: I run files through avidemux and rebuild frames and remove the packed bitstreams. This allows MOST files to be played. For the real stubborn ones, I use avidemux to copy the audio and save the vid as XVID with no b-frames. Takes a while to encode, but it works.
BTW, my issues are like what the quoted poster found: didn't matter if it's burnt or off of the USB. If the file give a problem, it's on all media, and occurs at the same video times.
