Hi,

Just upgraded the TV from a JVC 32" CRT to Pioneer 5080HD and the receiver from an old Sony HTIB to a Yamaha RX-V3800. Am now looking to upgrade the SD DVD player.

I have the Sony DVP-NC80V/B and actually rather enjoy it. The image looks great via component directly to the Pio. I have not noticed the progressive/interlaced function makes a difference on the image quality. Seriously, the only drawback to the sony for me is relatively long load times and I never use the changer.

The question I have is it worth it to upgrade to the Oppo since it looks like the main thing I'm getting is Region Free (never missed it with the Sony), upconversion to 1080P (don't need it with the 720P, ok 768p) display?

The other thing is if anyone has compared the deinterlacing/scaling of the Oppo versus the V3800 (anchor bay I believe)?

I was going to give the Sony to my parents and upgrade to the Oppo but I am wondering if it doesn't make more sense to let the parents by themselves a cheapy SD player, keep the Sony for myself, and use the savings (not much) go towards upgrading my subwoofer or towards a BD player.

Any thoughts?

I'm not familiar with the Sony so can't comment.

I've been pleased with my Oppo players, but if I were spending money today I would look hard at one of the HDM players.

If you want to try an Oppo, the 980 is $169. There is a 30-day return if you don't think it is worth it.

HI Bill,

Silly question but.....Does the Oppo sound work with SACD over the HDMI cable? I was reading on the sony and discovered the sony will only output SACD over the multichannel and not the optical digital. It sounded like a bit of a "spaghetti" mess and adjustment to go between the two.

If the Oppo can play SACD over HDMI that might be the deal breaker.

Yes the 980H can output SACD in DSD and PCM over HDMI as long as it is euqipped with 1.2 and later

SACD can only be output over multichannel analog out or HDMI and its because of copyright protection. Coax or toslink have no copyright protection since they are sending a pure audio stream.

For your needs the 980 should work very well. Tenatively, the 983 sounds like a 980 (even though there have been made clams that the audio will be slightly better) with the addition of ABT deinterlacing and scaling chips. Basically, the 980 is $170 and the 983 well liely be atleast twice the price.
