A little background. I have a 42" LCD Vizio. Have an xbox 360 hooked into the component and DVD recorder into the AV.

I recently hooked up the Pioneer xbox 360 home theater system. Everything went fine. Hooked the audio from the TV into the audio on the pioneer receiver. I figured I needed to buy an optical cable to run out from the DVD player into the optical on the receiver in order to get sound. I order cable...it arrives. Before hooking the cable up, I turned on the DVD player (I know...I should have done that earlier) and discovered I am getting sound through the pioneer system while playing a DVD. Is it as simple as it is happening because I have the TV audio hooked into the receiver and I have the DVD player hooked into the tv?? Will I get better sound if I hooked the optical up anyway or should I just save the cable for another future use?

Please excuse my ignorance...I am new to both HDTV and surround sound.

The optical out on the TV is for the internal ATSC tuner. They almost never pass a 5.1 signal, only 2-channel PCM from other sources. Connect the DVD player to the receiver.

Hooked it up and there is a major difference in sound. Thanks for the help!
