View Full Version : Pics of curtain masking systems
bass addict 01-17-08, 02:31 PM In anticipation of building my 130" 2.35 screen I am looking at some different masking systems. I really like the look of curtains in the theater and am wondering about those who are using them, how they like them, and if they would have done anything differently. I was looking into some black velvet curtains controlled by Insteons IR curtain box. I thought this might give a more theater like appearance than a GOM style masking system.

BIGmouthinDC 01-19-08, 10:18 PM have you done a search on the 2:35 thread?
I just took a quick peak and there are a bunch of threads.
bass addict 01-19-08, 10:59 PM Thanks Big, I didn't think of searching there. I did a search in this forum as I figured that's where everyone would post their build. :)
usualsuspects 01-19-08, 11:09 PM Check out the DIY 2.35:1 forum, a sub-forum of the 2.35:1 forum.
I have black velvet curtains and masks that I am in the process of installing, here is a shot of my old theater w/o the new curtains and masks. The screen is 120x67, and the pic is bad - I had to crank the contrast and brightness to get any detail because the room is a batcave, but I like the curtains look:

bass addict 01-19-08, 11:40 PM Very nice. I think curtain would make it easier to built your screen frame as well. You wouldn't need to bother with the side panels. I don't know why, but I like the look of curtains opening up to a 2.35 screen as opposed to a masking system.

I think the key will be to get a curtain that maintains a good crisp edge and maybe a little weight at the bottom to keep the edge hanging square.

I agree Big, the kicker is to get them close to the screen area while still maintaining unhampered travel in both directions. I'm wondering though, if when opening them up for different aspect ratios the curtains natural tendency to bunch up will affect the edge holding a close straight line to the screen.

Me too. But unfortunately I don't have enough room for curtains to stack on either side. :(

bass addict 01-21-08, 01:22 PM Unfortunately I am in the same boat. My room is 10' 7" wide and I would really like to squeeze a 120" wide screen in there. If I do that I only have a few inches on each side to play with which would not work for the curtain idea. So if I went the curtain route I would have to narrow my screen a little bit to make it work. Decisions decisions :p
usualsuspects 01-21-08, 02:10 PM You can bend curtain tracks and make the stack space end up on the side wall. Not sure on minimum bend radius, might not help in this particular situation, but it is an option for some setups.
bass addict 01-21-08, 02:40 PM I never though of that. That's a good idea. Thanks. :) I actually like the idea of having a curve to the curtains, might match my stage better. I guess I'll have to do some experimenting to see how tight a radius I can get away with.

Anyway to turn the sound of on that site. It's pretty annoying!
Nice room by the way.
CollinViegas 02-16-08, 03:27 PM How much space is usually required on each side of your screen for the curtains to stack?
I have about 21" on either side of the screen, would this be enough without having to bend the rod?

Sorry, I rarely have my speakers on so I never notice it. I'll turn it off. :)
Hi Bass Addict,
How is your masking project going, no posts to your thread in a long time ?
bass addict 12-05-08, 11:33 AM Bump
Yeah, sorry for not getting back sooner. With the economy directly affecting my extraneous purchases(GSM for a Chevy dealership), things have slowed down quite a bit in the theater. Seeing as it's going to be spring of next year before I can pick up a new projector, I decided to tear my old bar area apart instead and redo it. I am building a ticket booth, marquee, and new in wall component rack. Here's an archaic sketch of my new project.
