I'm trying to decide between the two models. There's about a $1300 price difference. Is it worth it for the 1080p? Thanks.

How far are you going to sit from it?

IMHO, you are too close for 768p 1150 - if I were you I'd get 1080p 110FD.

Thanks! I guess the extra cash will be worth it in the end. Oner more question...Are there any major changes with the 2008 Pioneers?

They are not giving much info right now.

Thanks for the info. I have a Panny 700U that I bought last month and really should have purchased the Pioneer based on what I saw, but didn't. Anyway, is it worth the loss to buy the Elite? Any thoughts?

Only you can determine that.

Ok, now I'm torn. Ordered the 1150HD, but can still switch to the 110FD. Watch mostly blue-ray and hd-dvd and sit about 10 feet in a controlled lighting environment. Can't move any closer. Driving me nuts. Yes I could spend the extra dollars, but only if I could really see a benefit. Also have the wife factor to consider. If 5-8 feet is too close for the 1150, does 10 feet make any more of a difference? Thanks.

Are you saying you cant move closer because it gets worse?

I guess the other factor is how long you plan on keeping the TV. If Pioneer comes out with some ground breaking technology in the next couple years and you want to upgrade, is it worth spending the cash on the 1080P now?

You sit too close so you have to have 1080p whether it's Panny, Sammy or Pioneer only you can decide.
What's wrong with PZ700 that you want to replace it already?

I too have narrowed my search down to either the 1150hd or 110FD. While I love the 1150's price, the 1080p on the 110FD sure is pretty. My living room is set up with my lazy boy about eleven feet away from my TV. At that distance, would the 110 really seem that much better? Because I'd love to be able to justify not spending the extra money for 1080p. However, I only use my TV for movies, would the 1150 have issues with Blu-ray?

At 5' to 8' I would say yes, at 10' I would say no, regardless if you are buying a bluray or not.

I could, but it's a wraparound couch and my wife dosen't like it moved all the time. She already thinks I nuts for all the money I have sunk into this hobby.

Went back and measured and it actually came out to 8 feet. Thinking it may be worth it after all based on the comments, given that my blue/hd movie collection totals about 150 and I view in a dark environment. If I don't there will always be that doubt in the back of my mind that I made the wrong decision. Thanks.

A 7-day cruise aboard "Liberty of the Seas" w/balcony stateroom can run upwards of $5000... I've done (7). A week @ WDW staying in a (2) bedroom suite @ the Beach Club Villas can cost many $$$$. Check out the cost of DVC membership these days. Supplementing your elderly in-laws meager income so they can afford to remain in their home w/health care and prescription drug costs  these days.

you get my drift...

I've got ~$13,000 (50PX50U & PRO-150FD) invested into this "hobby" and can assure you that you will not be disappointed. 720p displays will eventually go the way of their 480p predecessors... into obsolescence.

Why spend $$$$ for "old" technology.

I realized on the 700U that the black levels just weren't what I expected and decided to go with the Pioneer.

I just hope at 9' back I will not see SDE on my 1150HD. I could spend one more grand to get the 1080P... but I would rather put the grand towards a 60" + TV that I will get in 2010 when 1080P will be a standard.

from what I have been told... I will not see it. I am just so sick of people putting down 720P when they don't even take into account the viewing distance.

same old song and dance...

in a recent shootout... the 768P Pioneer beat out the Pany 1080P.

So does mine. But what do I do for entertainment anyway? Build PCs, watch TV & cruise the AVS Forum.

This decision should be easier because of the Pioneer price drop on the 1150's.

IMHO, you are too close for 768p 1150 - if I were you I'd get 1080p 110FD.

What is the distance at which one risks being too close for 50" 768p (vs. 50" 1080p)? If I've measured right, I expect to be sitting 8ft away - depending on how exactly it mounts and how I'm sitting on my couch, it could be anywhere from 7ft to 9ft. From what I can tell, that's right at the point where opinions would differ.

(I'm planning on getting a modestly priced temporary panel that will become my bedroom TV in a few years when full ECC thin Pioneer is released (hopefully). I'm trying to decide between Elite 1150 (768p Kuro), Panny TH-50PH10UKA (768p), or Samsung 5084 (1080p). Prices on all three models are quite attractive right now - the 1080p Sammy (surprisingly, to me) is quite a bit cheaper than the 1150, but quite a bit more than the Panny. If I risk seeing SDE, I'd probably go Sammy, but if not, I'll have a tough choice between the dirt cheap Panny and the glories of Kuro Elite.)

i went w/ the 1150 & couldn't be happier (even when sitting close to the TV, ~6' or so)

Apologies for pseudo-necroing this thread..

It's been a little over a month since this discussion was fresh; new information on the new stuff has been release, and now I'm tussling over this same decision.

The price diff. is right around $1000 more for the PDP-5010.

I'm not a hard-core enthusiast and this set would be in the family room; mostly for TV shows and sporting events (HD of course) and movies. Definitely not in a controlled theater type setting and seating distance for me vary from lying on the floor in front of the set to 15 feet or so back on the couch (depending on what my mood is.. :) ).

That said, I'd like to get something that won't be grossly out-paced or antiquated in 2-3 years.

Given those parameters, which is the better choice? Is the picture that much better on the 5010's 1080p, and does it's potential longevity justify the $1000 increased price??

Thanks in advance!

Noone can really give you an answer because it's such a subjective decision - it depends on your eyes, how often you're sitting close and far, your budget for now and later, etc.

But I can tell you that I got the 1150, I sit between 7-9 feet from the set, I don't have Blu-Ray yet but I will later and I am very content with my decision to get the 768p 1150.

In 2-3 years, the sets that will be out will certainly be better and will probably be a fair bit cheaper to boot. I'll put that money I saved this time toward upgrading with one of those, and perhaps moving the 1150 to the BR or selling it used.

I was in the same situation about a month ago.My seating position is 9-10 1/2
feet away(Lazy-Boy recliner). When I was shopping for a TV,I looked at the 1150 and the 150 together, from the distance of my seating position I could not tell the difference. The only difference to me was the price.I purchased a 1150,broke it in for 150 hours. It
continues to amaze me every day.
