I have a new Pioneer PDP4280 on which I'm currently running the breakin DVD. My question is about how to set up my Motorola 6412 III using HDMI (or component video) to get the best picture.

What should the HDMI/YPbPr output settings be, 720p or 1080i? I currently have it set to 1080i.

What should the 4:3 override settings be (display settings for standard definition programming), Off, 480i, 480p or Stretch? I currently have it set to 480i.

I use 1080i and "OFF" which works best with my projector for most general viewing.

For "big" events on ABC, FOX, ESPN or NatGeo I switch it to 720 (which is the native resolution of those networks).

YMMV.

PS. No-one with any intelligence whatsoever uses "stretch"! Ever.

Try this, but also try the other settings and decide which one looks best to your eyes with your combination of TV and source. For SD programming, the 480i setting looks better than 1080i because the TV does a better job of scaling the original resolution than the 8300HD does, and it should be the same or even better with your Pioneer since it has a better scaler than my older Panasonic.

the TV does a better job of scaling the original resolution than the 8300HD doesIn your case, with a bastard 1365x768 you don;t really have a choice. The TV scaler cannot be removed from the circuit and, as there are no available matching "768p'" sources, everything has to be scaled by the TV anyway.

It would be best to leave all sources at their original native resolution and leave it to the TV to scale it.

The cardinal rule of scaling is IF YOU HAVE TO SCALE AT ALL, DO IT ONLY ONCE!
