Ordered a PS3 off of sony.com, had it hooked up to my sammy 32 lcd in the master bedroom for a few days before I finally decided to bring it out to the family room and hook it up to my aging Panny 50PT-LC13. I spent a good hour rearranging my Receiver and PHONO. When all done with the cabling I decided to take full advantage of the PS3 and hook up the media server.

So I spent another hour drilling a hole through 8" of concrete to run a cat5 from my computer room to my family room, patch everything back up and screw on the faceplates. Thats when my doh moment came and I found out the the PS3 has wlan on board.

I immediately cracked open several dos equis and kicked my dog who was staring at me.

Well, i hardwire my PS3 just because i dont trust in Wlan ability to smoothly delivery media content 100% of the time. You can maybe take solace in that.

trust me you will be much happier connecting directly, the wireless is slower in comparison to a direct connection, i was running wireless for some time and switching over to a wired connection my dl's are now alot faster

so really the only mistake was kicking your dog

That's what I have too. hard wired instead of wireless, is kind of better and faster since the downloads are kind of big, specially of you plan to download HD movie trailers and games.
So go give your dog a Milk-Bone :D

And get yourself another six of dos equis!!!

I always hardwire with RJ45 when possible. Way too many things run at 2.4GHz just waiting to interfere with your connection. If you don't have anything else in the house, I'm sure your neighbors do!

Like everyone else said, you'll be glad you did it, even with a 100% wireless signal mine would just stop streaming....hardwired it, no problems! By the way, throw me one of those Dos Equis!!!!

Dunno if there's any point in parroting this again but be glad you went the hardwired route. Wireless would be slower than wired regardless because your signal would be coming through 8" of concrete and maybe it's just me but the PS3 seems to be particularly slow anyway over it's wireless connection.

well I'm glad I did it now, I was kind of ticked last night when I was playing with the settings and saw the wireless option and saw it was getting 100% signal strength.

Dos Equis' all around!

How long can the wire be before I run into any problems. Would 75 feet be okay for the PS3. Just wire with nothing else on the line, hubs or switches or anything else.

Thanks

Dos Equis' all around!Excellent. Thanks.

But, yeah, wired is the way to go. My wireless router is right next to my PS3, and I still noticed a huge bump in speed and reliability when I hardwired it.

I for one wish that Sony would revise the PS3 with an 802.11 A/B/G/N interface. B/G is OK for web surfing but the 2.4ghz space is just too crowded for time sensitive data like gaming and media streaming.

We've been using 802.11n @ 5ghz here in the house for months now and we've had nary a drop out. Very happy with the less crowded frequency.

Other thing about 5ghz is that it's shorter range than 2.4ghz - which means there is less likelihood of people in your neighborhood polluting your frequencies to begin with.

Im afraid to ask how you know what piss tastes like.. lol.

I have wireless hooked up, i havent had any problems yet. I can hook up wired (ps3 is only 10 feet from my computer and its in the same room) i had the wireless hook up for when my ps3 was in my bedroom.

Either way you will be good ,I agree though, you will be more secure w/ the wired, less chance of signal loss.

Now give the dog some beer for the kick.

In networking a cat5/cat5e/cat6 should be able to handle 300 ft without a switch inbetween.
