Greetings All,

I'm in the process of putting together a home theater in our new home. I'm working with about a budget of ~$2500. Here's what I've purchased so far:

TV: Mitsubishi 62" rear-projection HD LCD w/ DLP -- $999
Receiver: HK AVR-247: $399 (J&R)
Game System: PS3 40G $399 (Amazon)
Speakers: Klipsch Quintet II Black 5-speaker set + 2 old Bose speakers I had (for a 7.1 setup) - $299 (Vanns)
cables: 3 1.3a Certified HDMI cables + Copper 12AWG 50 ft. Speaker wire - $40 (monoprice)

I don't have a sub yet but I'm open for suggestions. Does anyone have suggestions for changes to my setup?

Thanks,
Chris

Not too bad for the budget. Have you already got a stand/cabinet for the TV and gear? Don't forget seating. You'll love the PS3!! It's awesome!!

SuperTal,

Thanks. Actually, I haven't gotten any speaker stands (I did get a stand for the TV from Best Buy for $300). Do you have any recommendations? (I hear the Klipsch speakers are pretty heavy so I probably need wood-based speakers...?)

Thanks,
Chris

P.S. Haven't fired up the PS3 yet, that's my treat for the weekend.

Some info about the room it is going in would be good too... is it a dedicated space or multi-purpose? Would help determine the type of seating you could use. Are there window's in the room? You may need window coverings if you get a lot of light in the room.

Roar,

I'll get the room measurements and post them. I can tell you that its a dedicated space, rectangular-shaped, carpeted, with four long (floor to ceiling) windows. What kind of window coverings would you recommend?

The windows could throw some nasty glare on your tv, so you will want to consider window coverings of some sort... depending on what you can get away with, the darker you can make the room the better. Shades will do an adequate job of keeping the light out, but you may still see some glare on the screen, usually curtain with black out cloth would be used to keep the most light out. If you don't have plans to watch the tv during the day, then I'm sure normal blinds would do just fine.

I second the black out cloth suggestion. I had my mother-in-law make some curtains with this type of material and it worked excellent for me.

Looks like a good setup especially for the price.
Velodyne has some inexpensive smaller subs that work well and would mesh with your system.

You may or may not have weirdness mixing your speakers, but since this is the rear soundfield, it may not be noticeable. The HK has Logic 7 processing and I am a really big fan of that for 5.1 sources. I wish my new Onkyo had Logic7 built in. I used to have a Lexicon prepro with that and it was very very nice. I miss it.

The measurements of the room are 13'10" x 21". I'm thinking of getting the black cloth to cover the windows. In terms of speaker-mixing, should I put the bose speakers in the rear of the room?

Also, anyone know where I can get good prices on speaker stands?

ebay, amazon, buy.com, monoprice for stands. I have been shopping for these recently. I am going with Sanus bf-24b's via an amazon marketplace dealer. Stands can get real spendy if you aren't careful. Also make sure your stands can handle the weight of your speakers. Some of the narrower ones max out at 2-4 lbs. And watch the shipping charges.

Or you can make some.
