View Full Version : Buy imported Dual Shock 3 - or wait?

So what's the consensus on this?

I'd like to have a Dual Shock 3 but I'm kind of leary about buying an imported one.

I really don't want to have to tinker and deal with issues - so should I just wait until the "official US" version is released - or go with an import?

From what I've heard, people have had LESS problems with the imported DS3 than the Suxaxis. It doesn't seem to have the connection drop out problem that plagued some Suxaxis controllers.

I know my DS3 has worked perfectly since I got it.

I've been holding off, mostly because I am broke. But I think I will be looking on ebay soon. I like rumble.

I purchased one from Play-Asia and it works excellent. I don't have a problem with any of my controllers. The only mistake I made was I should of purchased it in White instead of Black, that way I can distinguish it from the other 8 PS3 controllers I have.

I love the feedback as it is nice and smooth. Definitely recommend.

I ordered one off eBay last week for $65 with shipping. I figured that by the time they come out in the US, I'll be paying within $12 or so of this amount anyways, so I figured it was worth it. I've been holding off on playing Uncharted until this arrives.

If you currently have one or more games with rumble feature, go for the import.
I bought it to play Uncharted and Dynasty Warriors, but did not realize how much I missed rumble until I used it to play PS1 classics they offered on Japanese PSN.

The starting price point in US is probably going to be $49.99 or above, I certainly don't see the point of waiting for months to save $10.

just got two of them Imported and Honestly I haven't touched my old Sixaxis since.. I got Two white ones and I am throughly enjoying the extra weight and the rumble feature..

they just feel over all better made.. Thicker plastic, more weight, Buttons feel Different somehow, more progressive and less of a click.

I also noticed the response from the L2 and R2 buttons is less sensitive and more progressive. on my Sixaxis it was really easy to accidentally bump them and change gears when I didn't want to in Gran Turismo 4. With the DS3 I haven't suffered from nearly as many misshifts.

YMMV but I'm considering selling my remaining Sixaxis and buying two more DS3s

x2 on importing them. I also enjoy the weighted feel and do not regret them one bit. (1 white and 1 black DS3). although, my black DS3 suffered quite a bit in some furious NHL08 matches over the holidays... the right analog stick squeaks now when moved. :(

If you have the money and games that support rumble buy it. You won't regret it. It seems like they are better built too.

I have had mine since the third week of November and love it. Absolutely no connection issues with it. Although I had no issues with my original Sixaxis.

I find it has a better feel (more weight to it) and I like the plastic used on this one better than the translucent black plastic of the original controller which felt flimsy.

If you can, get one.

I thought the connection issues were due to the PS3 bluetooth antennae on the older models? Anyway, I'm just going to wait for the official version, and probably wait for a sale at that.

i bought 2 imported ones, and they work great, as for is it worth the wait? i dont know, the games i play dont tend to use the rumble feature to its full ability, but its fun! its up to you! lol Personally i love the look of my white ones, and the weight difference is very noticable (a good thing), if i went back to reg sixaxis, i would prob mess up my COD4 game lol

I bought the Japanese one and am VERY pleased with it once I put the trigger covers on it but I would wait. Its REALLY expensive for a controller. It can't be too long a wait for the U.S. version. Its better in every way, but its not really worth what you will have to pay.

another +1... I got my DualShock3 last month and in addition to fixing the occasional brief disconnects, now playing MotoStorm feels "right". Unchartered has great rumble too.

If you don't have to have rumble, the Sixaxis is fine -- but I love rumble and couldn't wait. To me the DS3 is what the PS3 should have launched with (if they could have, or course!).

I originally thought that I didn't want rumble and I do like the light feeling of the sixaxis, but lately I feel like I've been missing rumble.

I tossed around the idea of picking one up, but I'm curious... are the imported ones the EXACT same as the ones that will be sold here? Or do they have like Japanese only writing on them, or anything like that? It's really silly but I'm weird like that about stuff.

Thinking about picking one up also. So there's no issues ordering from PlayAsia and shipping to the U.S.? I think Warhawk and Ratchet and Clank (2 games I also have in addition to Uncharted) support rumble.

I believe someone else mentioned this: I thought the wireless drop off was due to the chipset used the system itself, not the controller. I have a 60GB and occassionally I have the controller issue. If it fixes that, well, icing on the cake then. :D

No comment from Sony yet, but I'm 100% sure they will. The Sixaxis will probably be phased out like the original Xbox and PSX controllers.

It is shorter, but I wouldn't say it's significantly shorter. You can always turn rumble off and enjoy the same battery life as the Sixaxis and the nicer weight and feel of the DS3.

Okay, the coupon pushed me over the edge. Ordered one black (not a fan of white controllers). 2 Ceramic White ordered from Play-Asia for a grand total including UPS 1-4 day shipping of $132.50. $66.25 each, not too bad. I couldn't decide whether to get 1 black and 1 white but decided I'd rather have 2 white to distinguish them both from the 2 Sixaxis I currently own. Can't wait to get my rumble on!

I'm still on the fence as I don't play my ps3 a lot maybe 2 hours a week on average and mostly play sport games other than COD4(well hunting is a sport :p) and just not sure if its worth it. I would most likely sell my non DS3 which save me a bit of money, and noticed that shipping isn't much more for 2 at JVG.

Although I do like the white, not sure how its going to look in a year or so:eek:

No, the 360 controller is just a modern controller and the DS3 is still just a modified SNES controller. The controller and the online are the two things 360 blows the PS3 away in. Still, I bought a PS3 and will not be buying a 360, so that must say something. :p

That said, the DS3 is lightyears better than the Suxaxis.

Honestly, playing Super Stardust last night with my new DS3...I was thinking that after preferring the 360 controller, I might end up liking the DS3 better. The ONLY thing I very much dislike are the triggers. Whoever designed those to be convex had to be on crack!

I would say import one now since import prices have dropped after the initial rush. The difference in cost to have one a month or two early is not that much, especially via Play Asia w/ a coupon code.

If you're getting DMC4, most definitely get one now!

I love it. Now that both systems have rumble, it makes me hate the 360 d-pad all that much more, and anything that uses the d-pad extensively (fighters, arcade games) that is multi-platform I will be getting on the PS3. Except for maybe FPS games which feel a little better on the 360 because of trigger shape.

Mine arrived yesterday. I did the ebay "buy it now" on Sunday and it's here already. Pretty impressive!

I immediately got into what was the most intense game of Warhawk that I've ever been in. I got my butt handed to me but it sure was great to feel the butt getting handed to me! It's been a long time since I touched the old PS2 dual shock so I was really surprised at the intense vibration I was feeling. At first the vibration really distracted me from the game, I'm sure that's why I was playing so poorly (Not!). After awhile it became second nature again.

I was worried, and am still concerned that Sony will change something or tweak the controller to make it better when they finally release it here, but I have a controller that's worn out so I had to replace it anyway.

I've got a DS3 in transit from Play Asia also. My primary controller is on the fritz due to the stupid control setup in COD4. Pressing down to run all the time does nasty things to the left analog stick. Mine barely responds in the forward direction now unless I press it in at the same time.

Sony has confirmed that the recent 2.0 firmware update has added rumble support for all PS2 games played on the system with Dual Shock 3.

I pulled out PS1 game Tekken 3. I load it up. I select Law. I press start. A quick kick…no rumble! I go back to the options screen and switch on vibration, start again and it works great. But it’s the first time I’ve played a PlayStation 1 game in years. I cant believe how much the graphics have dated.

PS2 games Final Fantasy XII & GTA: Liberty City Stories work with no problems.

I actually was hoping they would come with Japanese writing on them... but you have to remember.. I'm hoping mine arrives this week, I got an adapter on the weekend so I could use my old PS2 controllers and it was nice to have the rumble back. Cords suck though, and no PS button means I have to keep my broken controller handy to exit back to the XMB.

Another game tried it with was Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.
Not knowing if it would work without a patch, I fed in the game and immedietly were greeted by rumble on the select screen. Beyond the excepted rumble from the guns, the feedback from when Drake was hurt really helped to realize when you were about to die. When Drake is hurt, not only does the screen go grey, but the controller pounds with the heartbeat of the character.

i havent opened my second sixaxis controller so im going to put it on ebay and get this one. thanks for the code.

i just saw god of war 2 at play asia for $25, ill pick that up too.

i just got my ps3 40GB a couple days ago.

i have $85 in my cart. i figure i should take advantage of the $10 off $100 so i need to spend $15 more. any suggestions on what else to buy? dont need another game just yet. maybe an accessory?

I too grabbed one of eBay last week, love it, going to go back and play Uncharted on hard and give it a work out.

And I too hope for a COD4 patch.

And the extra weight makes this controller feel just right, not as heavy as the 360 controller and not as light as the Sixaxis.
