View Full Version : I actually think Blade Runner's Workprint is superior to the Final Cut

I'm listening to the commentary on the Workprint for Blade Runner, and I'm amazed how much stuff is left off from all other versions. Just look at the opening sequence (from the interrogation room through Deckard at the shrimp stand).

Other than the unicorn sequence and the tacked on ending, I actually prefer the Workprint to the Final Cut.

Just listen to the commentary on the Workprint, like I did. You'll be surprised how much stuff is left off the Final Cut...

More isn't always necessarily better. The Tacked on ending is a perfect example. As far as I'm concerned, Scott got the editing perfect on the final cut.

I agree about the food stand scene when you can see in the Workprint what he is being told two of are enough. Those prawns are huge, but I'd still want four like Deckard does. Also, I agree the interrogation scene where we can see the face hit the keyboard should have stayed in the Final Cut and the subsequent hospital scene with the agent in traction should have stayed in the Final Cut as well. Otherwise, all else in the Final Cut is an improvement over the Workprint, such as Joanna Cassidy's and Rutger Hauer's death scenes, the magical glass of whiskey appearing before Deckard being corrected by the addition of seeing M. Emmett Walsh pouring the glass for Deckard, etc.

This reminds me - I better go back and watch the workprint. (I filed the disc away - and forgot about it ).

I watched the workprint last night and argue that it is the definitive version of Blade Runner. Have been a fan of the movie since it came out in the eighties.

Well since Ridley Scott is the director, I think he gets the last word, which is the "Final Cut".

The Workprint version, unfortunately, looks pretty bad on my set.
