View Full Version : PS3 and Vizio?
Badonkadonk 01-18-08, 09:30 PM I bought a Vizio VW26L last night from Wal Mart, and I'm pretty disappointed with the picture I'm getting with my games. I'm using a PS3 thru HDMI and a 360 thru Component, and both look really pixelated and jaggy, as if the resolution doesn't belong on the TV, no matter what resolution I use (720p, 1080i, the TV's resolution is 1366x768).
The thing is, I know the TV has great potential though, because I switched the 360 to RGB and it looks fantastic, easily a thousand times better than with Component. But I'm already using the best PS3 connection there is, so do people who like the PS3 picture on their Vizios have any advice for me? Am I missing something?
Does my TV suck or does 720p just suck?
deathbymetal 01-18-08, 10:06 PM I own this TV as well and yes Component is crap on this TV but I have my 360 on VGA and like you said it looks good and my PS3 is on HDMI and looks good as well. Are you sure the resolution changed press Info on the remote to be sure, try changing the hdmi port on the TV. You could also have bad ports or a bad ps3 I suppose. All and all I'm satisfied with the tv except for the Black Levels
Badonkadonk 01-19-08, 03:22 PM I tried using the other HDMI port today and it still looks nowhere near as good as the Xbox does. And according to the TV, it's definitely running in 720p.
Cysquatch 01-19-08, 03:31 PM I use the 47" 1080p LCD and love it. Been very pleased with my vizio.
deathbymetal 01-19-08, 09:20 PM Try calibrating it (make sure sharpness is 0-1), IMO the ps3 looks better than the 360 I get less jaggies and an overallcleaner picture
Just to get you started I'll give you my settings & adjust them as you see fit
Backlight: 0
Contrast: 52
Brighness: 51 for movies 49 for games
Sharpness: 1
Color: 38
Tint: 2
Color Temp: Normal (6500K)
Advanced: All off
What looks bad on the TV, any 1 game or everything? How does the Text look like on the Dashboard?
Badonkadonk 01-19-08, 10:36 PM Text looks a bit pixelated too, I've only played the Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Ratchet & Clank demos. I also played a DVD of Stargate SG-1 and it was almost unwatchable. The same DVD looked more high res on my 360.
I'll try the settings you posted and get back to you when I get a chance. I actually had three people come into my room and look at Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and they think it looks really good. They also don't see the difference between my PS3 and my 360, so maybe I'm just really picky. I'm gonna try both versions of Assassin's Creed and switch between them to see how big the difference actually is.

Have you downloaded the latest firmware?
Grab the free calibration disc for BD players and calibrate your tv for the PS3. I had my PS3 hooked up to my VX37L via HDMI and it looked great. That's probably all you're missing.

What is this free calibration disc you speak of?

It's up to date as of a couple of weeks ago when I was at home, but I can't get my PS3 online here at school.

I'll try to hunt that down, thanks. It would help if you could link me to it, though :)
I tried some of your settings, deathbymetal, and it turns out that lowering the sharpness went a good way towards fixing what I hated about the picture.
I tried Assassin's Creed on the PS3 and 360, and the 360 version looks quite a bit better. It's smoother and much less jaggy than the PS3 version.
deathbymetal 01-20-08, 12:26 PM Do you have a camera to take some pictures of the text on the dashboard or a game so we could get a general Idea of how bad it is. If you could get online I would tell you to download the Uncharted Demo and see if you had any jaggies. I had none anywhere except on his Pistol.
Assassins Creed looks great for me, I played the 360 version on my tv as well and recall the versions looking the same but that was about 3 weeks before I got my PS3 and only for about 30 minutes.
Here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=948496) you go. Oh BTW, I forgot to mention (but was mentioned here) that turning sharpness way down on both my tvs for HD content went a long ways towards making the picture better.

I happened to download the Uncharted demo when I was at home so I tried it like you said. I'm seeing jaggies on more than just Nate's pistol, but that might be me being picky again. Since I turned the sharpness, down, the overall picture of PS3 stuff is very nice, but I don't understand how the 360 can still look better. I guess I just want my MGS4 experience to be as perfect as possible, haha. I know someone with a nice camera I might be able to borrow, I'll see about it later today when he's not so busy.
EDIT: Ratchet & Clank Future looks very fuzzy, in fact it's a real strain on the eyes to look at it for more than a few mintues.
deathbymetal 01-20-08, 06:07 PM The jaggies on his gun were all I could see in Drake. There could always be something wrong with the PS3 or the tv although since both HDMI inputs looked bad and the VGA looked fine I'm guessing if there was a problem it would be with the PS3

Yeah, I thought about that too. I know someone with a PS3 and we're downloading the NG Sigma demo to see if it looks any better on my TV on his PS3.
I've been playing Ratchet for a couple of hours and I think I'm used to the fuzziness, my main problem is probably that I'm too picky when it comes to things this expensive (I got my PS3 for $600 when it first came out and the TV for around $500 a few days ago).
