ign (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/846/846509p9.html) is down on HOME but very high on exclusive releases this year:

2008 Predictions

As you've just seen, we already have a good idea of what many of the biggest games of 2008 should be. However, there's still nearly a full year ahead of us and lots of time for Sony to shake things up in one way or another. Here are a handful of predictions that we think will happen over the next calendar year.

Sony Will Go on a Buying Spree
Sony still has a lot of catching up to do to get out of third place in console sales, and one of the best ways to do that is to secure as many exclusive titles as possible. With more and more studios being gobbled up by publishers, exclusive titles are becoming rarer. Studios like Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch are pretty much already Sony exclusive, so picking them up might not be a necessity, but it would help make sure they stayed in the Sony camp.

A studio like Free Radical Design would be a great requisition, while a company like Natural Motion could give Sony exclusive future access to some very impressive technical prowess. There aren't too many independent studios left, so now is the time to move and scoop them up.

The PlayStation Store Will See a Major Overhaul
This one is sort of obvious, but it really needs to happen. Though it's doing a much better job of updating the store each and every week with new content, a number of changes will eventually need to be made. Firstly, the Thursdays-only updating schedule will eventually come to an end as the Xbox 360 Marketplace will continue to post content, like Rock Band downloadable tracks, days in advance of the PlayStation Store. The shoe will drop when a big, cross-platform demo is set to hit on a different day and Sony will have to change its formula.

As well, the content layout will be changed drastically. As more and more demos, downloads and more pop into the store, Sony will see the need to revamp the store to give gamers much easier access to the content. More refined category searches should crop up as part of an overall relaunch that should hit either around E3 or just before the next holiday season starts.

PlayStation Packaging or Price Changes
Word recently came out that Sony has cut the production cost of the PlayStation 3 in half, thereby giving it much more leeway for another price drop. Given that there's still a lot of gain to be made in the console race, it will eventually need to make a change to how the system is sold, via either a lower price or some sort of killer pack-in deal. The MotorStorm pack-in worked well, but it was only in the most expensive package. But including both MotorStorm and Resistance in the cheapest package will make it a killer value for gamers while also introducing them to two of Sony's newest franchises, setting them up for purchasing the sequels when the arrive. So expect either a price drop or killer bundle to hit before the next shopping season begins.

Home Doesn't Take Off
While we're expecting an update on its release at GDC (including the possible announcement of an immediate beta launch), we won't be surprised if Home doesn't have as much of a long-lasting impact as Sony hopes it will. Unless Sony changes a number of things before its release, gamers will quickly tire of having to go into someone's apartment to see their trophies and walking into a theater to watch a trailer when they could just hit up a website and do the same thing (or download it off the PlayStation Store). Though it should come off as being successful for what it does, many gamers will shrug it off and go back to playing games on the system.

Sony's Lineup Dominates This Year's Holiday Season
Nintendo has already released a Mario, Metroid and Zelda title for the system, and Smash Bros. will be out relatively soon, leaving its must-have library as old news. Microsoft has a strong lineup, but most of those games are cross-platform. Sony, on the other hand, will have a bevy of killer exclusives hit the system throughout the year, and especially around the holidays.

Resistance 2 is already scheduled for the end of the year, and we expect Killzone 2 to release around the same time. We also expect to hear that Infamous, SOCOM: Confrontation and, hopefully, Gran Turismo 5 will launch around the same time as well. But we don't expect that to be the end: Sony will pull out all the stops and get MotorStorm 2 and God of War III out the door before 2008 is over as well, at least in demo form. And remember, we don't even know about the E3 announcements yet...

My guess for GoW3... March 2009.

+1.

GoW3 isn't coming this year. Suprised IGN said this - if you listen to Podcast Beyond even the PS editors contend no GoW3 this year because of the development time.

The only MENTION of GoW3 was the "so and so has left the studio but don't worry, God of War 3 is in good hands".

There might not be a release or a demo before the end of the year, but I bet simply releasing footage of a PS3 exclusive God of War 3 would build a lot of anticipation. With some games, that's enough to sell consoles.

I was playing Resistance earlier, and now I'm about to watch my second BD of the night. Perhaps some Warhawk, or Assassin's Creed before I finally call it a night.

I love my PS3. :D

Judging by December's sales figures (where the PS2 sold almost as well as the 360), the PS3 is going to have to lure PS2 gamers.

It's not enough to be a "good" or "powerful" or "versatile" console. It's going to have to seem like a sequel to the PS2 if Sony wants it to really take off.

As cool as I think it seems, Home isn't going to lure any PS2 owners into buying a PS3. For them, it's all about DMC4, MGS4, RE5, FFXIII, and GTAIV. That's what 2008 has in store for future (and current) PS3 owners. Not all of those are exclusives, but they seem that way to PS2 hold-outs.

And I think it was good move to remove BC from 40GB and making $399. People with PS2 currently could care less. I swore that I will finish all my PS2 titles on my 60GB PS3. I haven't even touched em!!!

Amen to that. I'm currently playing alot of PS2 games on my 60 GB. But with the big games coming (the one i'm waiting for) i will change. Can't wait for the 2008 lineup. I hope Sony will do like with the PS2 and have a diversified library of game! Unlike the other box that is mostly FPS ;)

This box has just as much FPS as that other box you mentioned. Plus, that other box has a diversified library of games too. More sequels and IP's are coming to this box in 08 that are FPS too. Haze, R-FOM 2, KZ2 to name a few.

Heh, I love my PS2 BC. In fact, the main game I'm playing these days is my first run through Shadow of Colossus. Amazing amazing title. I would love if one day they made a PS3 port with a graphical upgrade on the PSN as a download while leaving everything else exactly the same.

The best part. They never even mention Blu Ray. I know they are a gaming site and I know I don't need to sell you guys, but it is so much more than just a good gaming rig. BD is worth another chunk in sales as it is the other major percentage of the PS3.

Hah... ^ ;) the greatest story ever told...

"Once there was a boy. It was he who lost all, but he who would cry no tears for the dead he cherished most.

With sword in hand, bow on back and horse underneath, the boy that would not grieve carried the lifeless body of his beloved to a sacred place beyond the reach of lesser men. In an ancient temple he laid her. There she would wait until he could seek out the 16 great colossi of legend. Once found, he will kill them.

He will break them open upon the Earth and from their ruin will flow a new life to wake his love again. But he undertakes no simple task. His adventure will carry him over dead lakes, under ruined holds, around immense mountains, and across rolling plains of endless desolation. At journey's end will wait a behemoth of lore -- a colossus of unrivaled might and majesty.

They run, stumble, fly, swim and pound. The great 16 with skin of rock and weed stand tall as mountains, but to restore his past the boy must defeat these wonders of a bygone world. And yet beasts such as these cannot be felled easily. To discover the weakness of a titan the boy will draw his sword of light. Under the sun, it will point the way. Still, without steady hands, quick reflexes and sharp eyes, the sword's light will not avail him.

That's the story. Now understand the idea."

P.S this is probably one of my favorite games in a long time... I always think about it.

I don't see Insomniac getting purchased. Maybe an exclusivity deal, but they love their independence.

They are under sony, and they said that they have no interest in going to any other hardware side.

I'm not saying I see them going to another platform, they have extreme loyalty to Sony. I just don't see them ever being officially bought by Sony.

I don't know why people are so hyped about Killzone 2. The first game was supposed to be a PS2 highlight (even putting aside the "Halo killer" pre-release hyperbole), and turned out to be mediocre, underperforming sludge. The second game was better but certainly not as good as it could have been. We are talking about, at best, a 6/10 game and a 7/10. Yet the 3rd game in the series is supposed to be a blockbuster killer app for the PS3?

Please. It might turn out to be but history certainly proves otherwise. Good thing Sony has Resistance 2, a sequel to an excellent game by a proven, seasoned developer.

I'm confused by this post...did you by chance jump into some time warp and you've managed to play not only Killzone 2,but 3 also?

I think he should have clarified what "2nd" game he was talking about which is Killzone for the PSP and he looks at Killzone 2 as the 3rd game in the series.

Just a guess

Liberation was good last time i played, or looked at review for that game...

Ps2 architecture lacked what Killzone wanted to achieve...

Time will tell...
