View Full Version : Looking for honest opinion of Unreal Tournament
SBC2004 01-19-08, 12:43 PM ....please only answer if you 1) own or 2) have played a significant amount.
I own both xbox360 and ps3, love them both. However, I do not have many games on PS3 as I am quite selective in what I will buy.
My favorite game over the last 18 months (and still gets most play of all games) is Gears of War. The first game in 10 years that I actually get home from work and cant wait to play (much to the annoyance of my fiance). I like Halo 3 (not as good to me as GOW) and COD as well.
I understand the single player mode on UT is not that great, but I'm into multiplayer online.
How is the server for this game on the PSN and how fun/addicting/price worthy is UT to the point that I'd buy it?
I must note I am not a huge fan of Resistance, as I do own it and am not too fond of the multiplayer, though single is OK.
HeadRusch 01-19-08, 01:14 PM Can't tell what you are asking....what do you mean by "how is the server for this game"???
The game is basically Unreal Tournament 2004 with a "Gears of War" video upgrade. I find it too fast for joypad control (the game is the last of the high-speed twitch shooters if you ask me) and just don't think its a very good game.

Why not just simply rent it and see what it is like? Plus you have a thread of information for this game in this very forum to answer pretty much what you are looking for on this game.
nyctom07 01-19-08, 01:55 PM If you never played UT before don't buy this game...Rent it first to see if its for you...
Outside of the graphics UT3 is nothing like Gears of War...UT3 is a first person twitch shooter...The gameplay is very fast paced (double the speed that of Gears) and really chaotic...I personally love it but i have been a fan of this franchise since UT99...My advise to you is if you played UT before and liked it then go buy UT3...A fan of the series wont be disappointed with the PS3 version...
Asshandler 01-19-08, 02:13 PM UTIII on PS3 looks superb and runs almost perfectly. Chugs a little in one map with vehicles on it, but otherwise, ran perfectly for me. The sound is great too. The cutscenes for the single player campaign are also very well done.
Controls are extremely well done, and user-made mods are being introduced into the game at an incredibly fast rate. There's already a ton of new maps to choose from if you download them.
When I played, there was plenty of people playing, finding a server was never an issue.
All that said, I stopped playing it because I need a good single player campaign to keep me going, and UTIII is extremely lacking that respect. I had thought that playing the campaign co-op would at least offer some fun into the equation, but found that by playing co-op, you are unable to view the cutscenes, and are just forced to read a little text blurb before jumping into a new map.
Lame.
But the online multiplayer is done extremely well, no worries there at all. It's a fast-paced fragfest that looks stunning.
i got the game for christmas, and although i have tried , i am not enjoying it very much. i was expecting gears of war type single player. the multiplayer just doesnt do it for me. however there are alot of people who seem to enjoy the game, so my suggestion is to rent it, and if you like it buy it. PM me i'll sell you my copy.
isaidme 01-19-08, 02:17 PM Great game.
GW-SMOkeY 01-19-08, 02:26 PM Now if it was cheaper, it be even better!!! But the game is worth its price tag, and any hardcore UT fan will know it :)
Protopet 01-19-08, 03:51 PM I really like it.
The online features are excellent, it looks and runs great, and game play is really fun.
It is fast(I don't think it is really fast), but yes it is different than GeOW.
Big_Mog 01-19-08, 05:46 PM now i never played GOW. I am a huge Orignal UT fan, it was the first FPS i ever got into. I skipped on all the other UTs (for some reason), but once i saw this forthe ps3 i sold all my games i didnt play anymore and bought it. I got a wireless mouse and keybaord for this game too (ehh it doesnt handle so smoothly). I honestly think the game is great, but i love to play FPs with my friends and after playing CS (counter strike) i got more into Tactical FPs's like COD4 (which i cant stop playing) (not saying Ut3 takes no skill (it takes tons! its hard, i can hold my own, barely). Ut online hasnt been thegreatest, and still no headset support that i know of (i havent played it in 2 weeks) and this is the most important, all my buddies who bought it Sold it already for that simple fact. Personally its a beautiful game, i love it and would play it over COD4 if i had friends who would play it, but since i dont, COD4 it is (not a bad choice i love it)! The mods are definately a cool feature, i love the 3rd person mod!
UT3 is a fun game.
But what makes it fun?
-Dying is not much of a problem. EVERYONE will die many times on each map. This aint Battlefield where the super players get 50 kills and 2 deaths. And you dont need to wait 10 seconds or whatever to respawn. Spawning is instant, so the action stays fast and furious and even if its just 10 people on the map, it seems like more because you kill a guy and he comes right back. It keeps the maps fun IMO.
-Easy to learn, Hard to master. Getting the quick drop on someone doesn't guarantee death. This isnt one shot one kill type of game. Knowing how to dodge, how to use the weapons, maps etc will seperate the good from the bad.
-Downloadable content: Mod maps will keep this game fresh as long as you use own the game. Just keep downloading mods and the game will always seem fresh. This game has a HUGE following on the PC because of this.
-Online: I have not experienced much of a lag problem. My connection is pretty solid like 98% of the time. There are a lot of servers to choose from, and you can seperate keyboard people from controller people if you think that makes a difference (I dont). Only downside, not many people use a mic. Would be fun if everyone on a team could communicate with one another.
The only real negatives about this game is that single player sucks and there is no offline multiplayer (however I heard there could be a downloadable fix to allow this in the future). Other than that, this game is fun if you like fast and furious action.
Dont get this game if you just wanna hide in building and snipe people all day long, or you get angry because you shot a guy in the head and he didnt instantly die.
Big_Mog 01-19-08, 06:50 PM the reviews are so mixed, i believe this game is for a specific type of FPS person. If your having doubts about this game, honestly just pass on it. Its a good game but, to me its a good game, and i understand not a ton of people like the UT style so if youve never played Ut then its probably not for you
Connavar 01-19-08, 07:58 PM Of you're into multiplayer, you'll love that game.
Graphics are better than Gears (because it never slows down), and the controls are top notch even with the pad (once you've ajusted the sensitivity and turning acceleration).
BillKen 01-19-08, 08:41 PM I just got it and love it. I didn't bother waiting for the 360 version 'cause you can rest assured M$ ain't gonna allow the user created maps and such on the 360.
CHAVAN30 01-20-08, 09:18 AM i have both gow and ut3. ut3 is much faster paced. your friends that have
ut3 can join in with you on co-op at any time(which is needed if you play at any level higher than normal). the matches are bigger online and the game is better looking.
gow beats it with story and is more tactical.
i beleive if you love gears you will love ut3. has the same "feel".
Arpeggi 01-20-08, 10:02 AM 2nd best game on the PS3 (after Virtua Fighter 5) and best online experience of this gaming generation.
I'm an old Unreal Tournament fan, and honestly I think UT3 blows.
1. Not many people playing online. There seem to be many more people playing Resistance and CoD4.
2. The frame rate is ok, but it isn't quite as glass smooth as the PC versions of the game. Which is a problem because UT is a twitch shooter, which leads me to...
3. The controller really blows for this game. It really needs a mouse, which you can use, but good luck finding a game if that's your control scheme.
4. Maybe this is isolated to my setup, but I had a hard time with maps locking my PS3 up while loading.
At the end of the day, I ended up selling the game and going back to CoD4 for my online shooting needs. :)
instantpop 01-20-08, 12:54 PM I played the crap out of UTIII when it came out. I still pop it on a regular basis to get my fix, but I never really find myself WANTING to play it. It's fun to play when I see it sitting on my shelf and go "oh, yeah, Unreal III," but when I need a full multiplayer fix, Warhawk is what I always reach for. UTIII is an arcade shooter which is fun when that is what you are in the mood for. Lately, I haven't been in the mood for it, but that isn't to say UTIII isn't a great game. Just depends on if you like the type of game it is.
From a technical standpoint, online is flawless and lag free.
dropgems 01-20-08, 02:48 PM I got it and not sure how I feel about it yet. I've never played any unreals before but I'm all about twitch shooters. Timesplitters is like my fav shooter. I also love Resistance too and COD4. I've only played Unreal for a few matches online though so I'm still undecided but I think I just don't like the weapons. I'll give it one more night I guess.
Game is very good by itself. Game is AMAZING with the MODS and Maps you can add. Especially with the 3rd person MOD. WOW

William Mapstone 01-20-08, 09:44 PM Due to the mod community, UT3 is a must have... plus with all the complaining about developer charging for extra content, I am surprised more PS3 owners are not embracing this game...
isaidme 01-20-08, 10:01 PM I downloaded about 10 user created maps last night for FREE! UT3mod.com
Whats not to like.
MarkcusD 01-21-08, 04:41 PM It's pure fun. Just as a value proposition, there are so many good free addons it's worth it if you like it at all. For the people who say it's too fast, it ships with a mutator that slows it down. If you don't like the controller, it supports mouse & keyboard. Unlike COD4 it has vehicles and alot more maps. If you like gears there is also a 3rd person mod that you can download.
dropgems 01-21-08, 09:59 PM Can someone explain a couple things. What's with the downloading that sometimes occurs during a loading screen. I'm assuming this is the mods, correct? It seems like a couple of the modded games I was in were sorta glitchy. Not sure if this is the connection or because of the mods. One game, everyone was floating around zero gravity style sorta and it was kinda annoying, imo. Also, can someone give me some basic tips like which guns are over powered and which are under powered. I see lots of rocket launcher whoring, btw. Like which guns have good secondarys etc... And with the sniper, I assume you don't have time to zoom so you just shoot from the hip most of the time, right? Thanks for any tips.
Protopet 01-21-08, 11:11 PM The more I play it, the more I like it!
And I have yet to download a mod!
I love vehicle CTF.
^You could just shoot the sniper from the hip, but you might not be as precise.

I'm not totally certain, but I think I remeber reading somewhere that when you select a server that's using any sort of mod that you don't have, it will automatically download to your PS3.
As far as overpowered guns, the rocket launcher seems to be the winner. If you actually hit someone directly with a rocket, they're dead. They can also die quickly from being inside the blast radius. Not to mention its fire rate is pretty fast also.
Most would agree that the enforcer (default weapon) is the most underpowered gun. Although, if you dual-wield them they can be pretty dangerous. All in all, each weapon seems to be deadly if you know how to use it correctly.
I think the secondary fire on the flak gun is better than its primary. I've killed many more people with the grenade launcher than I have with that bouncy shotgun spray ricochet crap. I also like the link gun's secondary for repairing vehicles, capturing/destroying nodes, etc. It's a very useful weapon both primary and secondary. Kind of like the "engineer" weapon of UT3.
Now, if you want to talk overpowered vehicles, then look no further than the Darkwalker. That thing is a beast.
Like the poster above said, shooting the sniper rifle from the hip is a lot less precise. I find the sniper rifle useless in small to medium sized maps due to the speed and chaos of UT3. It's hard to find a spot to relax and kill from a distance without someone running up on you. The large maps however, can be quite a blast with the sniper rifle. One in particular I like, and I can't remember the name, is a forest level with HUGE trees all across the map and LONG sight lines. It's easy to set up camp somewhere and get several kill before you're forced to move on.
dropgems 01-22-08, 09:53 PM Great! Thanks for the tips.
Big_Mog 01-23-08, 12:51 AM Ut3 has been getting dusty, ive been kind of disapointed jsut because cod4 was such a good game, UT3 should have came out 1st, then i would be disapointed with COD4 lol. I love the game dont get me wrong, but i cant tear myself away from COD4 :\ I need more UT3 friends! add me BOUNTY14 is my PSN ID!!!!
Did they fix the whole headset issue? or is it still no one talking on their headset?
I played the crap out of UTIII when it came out. I still pop it on a regular basis to get my fix, but I never really find myself WANTING to play it. It really is too bad, I played the original Unreal Tournament for *years*. The recent ones just haven't done it for me.
