I absolutely love this game! I was going to wait until the 24th to get the US version but decided to purchase it off the Hong Kong store. And guess what? It's all in english! You can also remote play it on the PSP.

A fun, addicting game that has my vote for the best psn game to date. My son and I played 2p co-op for 5 hours straight last night. :D

I never played DTD. But I did play lots of Towers in War3. I am looking forward to this. I heard Pixeljunk Racers wasn't that great though. I hope they release a demo with it! But if they don't I'd probably buy it anyway. :(

This game is getting crazy. My son and I hit the wall on the 2nd Medium map called "smile". Well, we ain't smiling. You'll all know what I mean when you get the game. I'm sure its some simple tower combo we haven't tried. The damn game is too addicting. ;)

I can't imagine what the hard levels are like. Trying to "rainbow" all the easy levels is impossible for me and i'm stuck just trying to get by the 2nd medium level. I'll be able to sit down with it this weekend to try again.

Online co-op with voice chat would be incredible for this game.

Why do I suck at this game? I've played for approx 6-7 hours and have only gotten a rainbow on the first stage (let the waves begin). I dont much see the point in beating a stage if you dont get a rainbow.

Oh and now thanks to this game and FF Tactics on the psp I now officially suck hardcore at COD4. Great...

Towers do decent damage vs. ground forces
Anti-air do decent for flyers
Arrows are best vs. spiders and do decent against the flyers

Still trying the right mix vs. the shielded ground guys on Med 2. When we think we are doing great, we hit wave 17 and there are way too many of them. I think we need to save the gems for new weapons rather than upgrading towers, arrows, anti-air.

Just got Burnout Paradise in the mail today so Med 2 will have to wait. ;)

You guys are way past me. I can't get past the last level on easy. (the one with all of the spiders). I guess the correct tower placement strategy hasn't "clicked" in my mind yet. Right now, I just place towers and try to upgrade as fast as possible, while collecting as much money as I can.

Should I be spending gems on upgrading or saving them for new towers?

Are the 10% or 15% bonuses worth it?

Spam the entire level with arrow-towers. Fully upgrade to black any that are in the vicinity of your lil' natives. I saved up 14 gems and put a hive near the middle for the extra damage over a very wide area. That will get you through the final easy stage.

I thought I was going to rainbow it but one of the last waves has spiders come from the bottom and go straight for the natives while more came from the top. Half my arrows started firing on the top spiders while the other half wasn't enough to stop 2 or 3 spiders (from below) getting through.

This title has a pretty steep learning curve and gets frustrating at times but just makes me wanna work harder to get the level beat. It's money well spent IMO.

PJ monsters and FF tactics have made me forget all about COD4.

The last easy stage with the spiders I made to wave 19 and one fo the spiders decided to take a detour into my house, he ate a baby and it was late so I gave up after that.

It's extremely tough call to sacrifice pumping up your towers or get a kick ass new tower. It 's easier in medium rounds to pump and get new towers. I've beat a couple last night but no rainbows. Now that i have the jist of the game I'm going do better on the first levels.

That was big question for me too. I beat a couple stages and then realized they have to be perfect runs to get a rainbow. In the easy matches: Is it wise to pump towers or go for a powerful tower. My experience was that while going for the upgraded towers I was not killing the oncoming monsters well enough. I was just upgrading the canons and spacing them in a left right pattern to kill the stone guys in the match that doesn't give you coins for killing enemies.

It is the perfect 2 player experience (local) you can get, and it's incredibly stategic.

I spent the entire weekend with a friend playing this and can't get the damn 7 rainbows to open up the final boards. Anyone get this far? We ended up getting 6, but that was HARD work.

Alright, I've been playing this more and more lately and have some basic questions.

When you upgrade your towers, do they fire faster and/or stronger? I was doing this at first but didn't really notice any change, so I started saving the blue eggs for Mortar and Fire towers, which are fun but expensive.

And what is the best defense against those silly linebacker-looking statue guys? Canons seem to work pretty good, but on later waves they go too fast for the cannons to do enough damage.

Great game. Simple concept, yet difficult and addictive.

I know upgrading your towers makes them stronger but not sure if their faster. Saving the blue eggs for better towers is different in most levels. Most times I make towers quick and level them up maybe once on each and then dance at some while saving up eggs half way thru for a fire tower or lazer. The linebacker guys are taken out easier with the cannon. I usually stager them left then right to get hit with one after another. Hopefully after a while you get a flame tower to easily take down their power. Yeah Khowe22 (Myst) I have been spending a lot of time the past two days on this game but I'm going to put in a few hours with COD4 tonight. Even though I've caught the PJM bug!

You can power up towers with eggs that you receive from killing enemies. The towers have a power meter and a flag that changes color when the meter fills up. The egg fills the meter all the way up and changes the flag and standing on top of the tower will fill the meter up as long as your on top of it. But while standing on a tower he sways back and forth.

I seems to hit for more power/damage. I usually place a couple of cannons close to the starting part of the enemies to weaken them before they hit the scattered ones placed throughout the map. Those are the ones I pump up the most.

Depends on tower type. If you stand on the tower and hit x you'll see a different picture depending what the upgrade is , hit o to back out.
Pic of arm making muscle= stronger attack, like for cannon
Pic of tower n circle= greater range, like for arrows
Pic of pencil= I think is a faster attack, like for air targets, towers
Anyone know if having two players dancing on a single tower upgrade it faster then just having one player dance?

This game is kicking my butt. I can't seem to get past the first medium stage, no matter what I do. I get to wave 15 and then I get swamped.
I finished it by putting cannons on the top treeline and arrows on the lower one of the top path. Get 3 or 4 anti-air in the top treeline and build them up to max. The lower path you can put 1 anti-air and some arrows. Near the village I put 1 cannon and the rest arrows.

The cannons have such a poor range when firing north and they can cover only a small section of the path if you put them in the lower treeline. Anti-air can sit one level back in the forest if you need them to because they have great range.

As for timing, I try to place the first towers where they have the maximum path coverage.

I usually sacrifice a few villagers to the spiders that take the shortcut. I can kill 1 or 2 but some always get through. There are so few who go to the lower path that I don't think it's worth worrying about it. I'd rather spend the jewels maxing out the cannons at the top or the anti-air.

I plowed my way through the shielded beetles but I'm not sure what their weakness is. Anyone know the best way to get them?

I'm kind of shocked that you don't unlock anything except the run boost by the end of the Medium #1.

SK3_OWENS

I was just wondering if anyone has beat the easy#3 where you don't receive any coins for killing enemies? I started by placing 8 cannons staggered on the first trail and 3 anti-air guns and 3 cannons on the back portion with two anti-air. I pump the cannons up the most and one anti-air to the max to deal with flying.

I'm going for a perfect kill for a rainbow and I keep coming up with just one person getting by and ruining my game.

If you open a tower does it remain open for other levels? I start out using the three given to you at the beginning of the game and never went around the wheel to see if the other towers are open. And where did you get the boost? I haven't left easy levels until i get a rainbow to progress. Guessing there in the medium levels.

Each level "resets" any previously unlocked towers. You have the start again with your 3 towers. You may get to start with a 4th tower later on (past the medium levels) but I'm not sure. Lot more strategy and longevity in the game when they not let you carry towers over.

We've beaten the medium 2 (smile) level. The secret for those shielded ground guys? TESLA TOWERS. They absolutely destroy them.

We are on the infamous medium 3 (bridge level). This is the level that everyone (namely the 1up staff) is stuck on. My son and I tried it a couple times and gave up for the night.

My son and I tried it a couple times and gave up for the night.

i have a rainbow on the bridge level you need to buy the upgrade for the air weapon put one in the middle of the first group of trees and one at the top where air guys take the shortcut. i used cannons and arrows for the rest.

anyone gotten past the level with only 4 trees??

I think i gave up trying to rainbow that level. ;) I'll probably retry it though after I get my butt kicked on the bridge level.

I'm was really close last night and I know what I have to do to beat it. I would post how but I'm a work and don't have the time to type it all. The reason it seems hard is that killing enemies doesn't give you coins, they start you with quite a few and you have to work with what your given. Going for a upgraded tower doesn't work, just upgrade the hell out of the first three.

I was hoping to use the Lazer beam tower to take out the rock monsters which did absolutely nothing. What beginning creatures does it work against? Flying Creatures?

Edit: Just read it was for flyers.

after you beat the "boss" medium stage you unlock a bomb feature with the square button(it takes 5 gems to plant one). it works well for that one monster who gets past your defense

How about we post specific strategies for each level (ie: easy 1, 2, etc., medium 1, 2, 3, etc.). The easiest way is probably post what you do in order like:

Build 3 cannon towers along the Left treeline
Then build arrow towers, etc.

Would this be helpful at all?

So based on the recommendations here, I downloaded this last weekend. What a time demolisher! I'm playing co-op with my wife, and we stayed up WAY too late the first night.

We've got rainbows on all of the easy levels and about half of the mediums. We have one more medium to beat before we move onto the hard levels.

Great game for only $8!

I kept having problems on the medium level "Smily face" untill I figured out that if you put a flame thrower way up by the place they first come out and jack it up to black, it pretty much takes everything out on its own lol

Just so you know, you can do spoiler tags. The tag is [ SPOILER] [ /SPOILER] (without the extra spaces after the opening brackets) and the result looks like:

Useful when you want to leave information like this, but others may not want to see.

this is how i rainbowed the 4 trees level:

I built an Arrow on the far left tree, 2 Cannons in the middle, and another Arrow on the tree closest to the base. Save gems and money. Upgrade both Arrows to yellow first. You want to upgrade the far left Arrow to Black as fast as possible afterwards, but also upgrade the Cannons to yellow when you have time. Once you have 13 gems, get the Flame tower. Sell the left Cannon first and build a Flame. Repeat with the other Cannon when you enough money. Upgrade the other Arrow to black too. Continue saving gems and buy a Mortar tower. In the later stages, the land units will be reddish and the Flame towers will not do much damage, so replace them with the Mortars. When you come to the final air stage, the fat twirling things, sell your right Mortar and build the Anti-Air tower and fully upgrade with gems. I think that's the last level before the boss, so after that sell the Anti-Air and the 2 Arrows and build Mortars. Upgrade them with gems and sit back. Don't count on getting the highest score with this strategy, but you can prob. tweak how far you upgrade the Mortars at the end to save some gems.

My wife and I bought this game last Thurday or Friday and just rainbow'd the 4 tree level last night. Great game for so little cash. The big key to the tree level is not going for every last coin. You never come close to running out of cash and the time you spend running around is time wasted that you could be upgrading the towers. We only went for the coins when everything was fully upgraded(aka: we didn't have anything else to do and were competing to get the coins, the rest of the time we played tag). We rainbow'd it with 4 black mortars in the end with 9 gems left and about 2k coins each.

Our technique is pretty easy. Tree are labeled numerically starting from the left, like reading a book. So #1 is the left tree, #2 is the middle-left tree , #3 is the middle-right tree , and #4 is the right tree. To start #1: arrow, #2: cannon, #3: arrow, and #4: cannon. The two arrow towers never change until the middle of level 18. Talk about efficent! For the first 5 levels you need to keep all the towers about even as far as upgrades. Priority for upgrading goes left to right, with the 2 cannons never needing to go above purple. You need to have the the #2 cannon red by level 3 and purple by level 5. You should be able to do this without spending any gems, so don't go running for all the coins, just make sure you get the gems. You'll have enough gems to purchase a fire tower by the time the first round of sheilded guys comes in(somewhere around round 10). Put a fire tower in the #2 tree and make sure it is red by the time the sheilded guys get within range. When you put the red fire tower in #2, put another arrow tower in #4 and get them upgraded. There will be a long while that things are fully upgraded and you'll have nothing to do but collect coins at this point. Buy the laser and mortar towers during this down time as well. Even though a bunch of enemies come out with fire sheilds, the fire does weaken them a bit and the 3 max'd arrow towers take care of the rest easily. Don't demolish the fire tower until just before the big fat flying things come out(up around round 14 or 15). As soon as the last round of ground enemies is outside of range before the fat flying creature, build a laser tower in it's place(#2) and max it out instantly with gems. As soon as you are done maxing it out, turn the #4 arrow tower into a mortar tower. As soon as the big fat flying things are killed, replace the laser tower(#2) with another mortar tower and max it out instantly with gems. Get the other mortar tower (#4) upgraded. Things stay like this until the middle of round 18. As soon as the enemies are past the arrow towers in round 18, replace the two remaining arrow towers (#1 & #3) with mortar towers and get them upgraded as fast as possible.

I just finished the game. I played it casually, maybe 2 hours a night with a 2 week vacation to Disneyland in there. One of the best 15-20 hour values (for $9.99) I have played in a long time. Takes me back to the earlier simpler days of games like that, the first command and Conquer (and Dune 2 before that). Back before they just got to complicated so they were really fun.

The hardest level I found was I think it was "Hard 2" with the "T" type setup. That level took me a long time to pass.

So I beat this game and got rainbows on all of the levels (FINALLY!!). I have a question for anybody else who has achieved all rainbows.
Once you get all rainbows, the backgroung scene of the island turns to night time (instead of day time...duh). I have tried going back to some levels but they seem unchanged. Does this night time background affect anything or offer anything new? or is it just there to acknowledge that you achieved all rainbows?
Anybody else got this far yet??

I just bought PJM tonight, and it cost me $10.75. Everyone's saying they paid $8.00. I don't really care about the difference of a couple bucks, but it's currently $9.99 +tax.

What a fantastic little game. I downloaded the demo and had to buy it. It's Desktop Tower Defense on whatever Roger Clemens was injecting. I'm ashamed to admit I spent nearly two hours finishing the first "special" level, after finally figuring out that cannons weren't doing the trick against the spiders. Now that it's 2:58am, I finally had to turn it off.

Nice little game.

Just discovered the awesomeness of this game yesterday and am totally hooked. I have a question, though. How do you increase your point totals? I'm assuming the rank they show you is for the score on that particular level and I see scores in the 50,000 range at the top of the board for what I am assuming are single levels. How do you increase your score? What is factored into it? I'm routinely getting around 8,000-10,000 on each level.

This game is fantastic. And Remote Play?!?! SWEET!

Actually, the trick on getting through the one where they don't have money is similar to the trick to getting high scores -- earn interest. In this level, try not building everything at once - save your money and pocket the interest - this will allow you to build a couple of extra towers that you wouldn't have been able to do otherwise.

In general to rack up high scores, you need to maximize your collection of coins and gems. To get the most coins, you need to spend your gems on interest. at first I thought it would just give me a boost in interest for that round, but it is cumulative. After I figured that out, I've gone back and done most of the levels getting in the top 200 or so.

Some bugs in Encore prevents me from giving it a "10".

- In two players, if you hit action buttons at the same time, one (first player, likely) will get cancelled.

I tried the suggestion of all bow and arrows, but the large gorilla looking things tend to make it through. I have also tried to use the least amount of money as possible for each level in order to gain interest, different theories with combinations of cannons, bows, and air guns, saving eggs for a better tower versus using to upgrade existing, etc....no luck with anything I could think of.

Any suggestions?

I was the one who recommended using the least amount of money; in fact l went back and played it last week and got 31st place using that strategy in solo. I even used my first 7 gems to buy interest. Of course, it still took me like 10 times to beat it while trying to minimize expenditures. If you have already earned bombs (and aren't really going for rank), you can save your gems and blow up any guys sneaking past - this takes 5 gems.

I found I had to go back to the right side and add a couple of cannons (in addition to the four I make in the second round) for the large group of the big guys - so, for the last round of the big lumbering guys I think I had 6 cannons on the right side and 5 on the left. I also had to make a couple of extra anti-aircraft for the last wave of flying dudes in addition to making the two I have on the top of the right side purple.

my g/f and I are on the last level... tried it once, and have been too scared to try it again! I assume the level on the far left of the screen becomes available after you beat the last level.

My question has to do with the map indicators... thus far we have rainbowed every level except the last one. Several of ur rainbows also show a white dashed circle around the red circle that indicates a stage. Anyone know what that white dashed circle means?

Also, what are your thoughts on using the remote mines? I hope that isn't considered "cheating" as we have had to use them on a few levels.

I thought the white dashed circles just meant there was something "special" about that level such as limited amount of money such as the Prudence level.

It's not cheating. It is just a different strategy.

Anyone know of any future updates to this game after Encore?

There's supposed to be a patch with trophy support coming, but no word as to when.

You guys aren't the only ones. This is most definitely a great game for couples.

Does anyone else have suggestions on how to rainbow the Prudence is the Key level? I have tried and tried on both single player and two player and I can't do it.

Frick, my wife and I were going CRAZY last night trying to figure this level out! Man, if this is supposed to be the "easy" level, I don't EVEN wanna think about the hard levels! :p

Dug back a bit in the thread and found this:

Actually, the trick on getting through the one where they don't have money is similar to the trick to getting high scores -- earn interest. In this level, try not building everything at once - save your money and pocket the interest - this will allow you to build a couple of extra towers that you wouldn't have been able to do otherwise.

In general to rack up high scores, you need to maximize your collection of coins and gems. To get the most coins, you need to spend your gems on interest. at first I thought it would just give me a boost in interest for that round, but it is cumulative. After I figured that out, I've gone back and done most of the levels getting in the top 200 or so.

See their website for details: http://pixeljunk.jp/Monsters/page18.shtml

I had no idea that there was paid interest in any level, if you saved some of your coins. Great, so now it's not only a matter of what combinations of towers to put out, it's also important when you put them out. Looks like it's gonna be another late night for me and the wife! :D

We get so close to rainbowing this level. On our last run-through only one spider got through! And he was down to almost zero health, too. Me and my wife were jumping up and down watching him get to the end, egging the towers on like we were at a football game yelling "D-Fence!! D-Fence!! D-Fence!!" And then the defense let us down. And we collapse onto the floor, beaten and exhausted. :p

Tough game. But addictive as hell.

It's a tough level for "easy". I haven't been able to rainbow it yet. I decided to move on and try to get the ability for bombs and then see if I can do it then. I think I have eight levels rainbowed on single player and seven on two player (I rainbowed my first level on hard, single player last night).

I am still enjoying the game, particularly when the kids will play it with me.

I need to dig back into this. A couple of people on my friend's list were playing last night and it brought a smile to my face.

Prudence is Key level

This one is very hard. I think we lucked out. At the top trail we put mostly air to air and arrows on the bottom row of trees but put canons on top row. The canons are only effective pointed down.

On the bottom trail we put some air to air and mostly black canons. That got the rock monsters. Black canons.

Just beat the Prudence level by myself!! :D

I have absolutely no idea how I did it, or what I put where....Basically I let the interest add up as much as I could, dropped down two rows of cannons, three air towers, and put down a couple more arrow towers for the spiders...And somehow I got the rainbow!! Once you kill the last wave of birds, cash out your air towers and turn them into cannons. I think that made a difference, too.

Now the only problem is having to do it again later tonight with the wife. :o

Hazzah!

I just finished my last rainbow of all the levels and all the trophies.

This game took up all my game time (which is limited) for months. Can't remember the last time I inched out every ounce of a game like this one.

I suppose I could go back and do it again jockeying two controllers . . . .

quick question.

on the trophy challenges where you have to rainbow a level, does it record it for the island as well? Also if you rainbow a level I take it it doesn't unlock the said trophy unless your doing the trophy version?

Anyone know what the secret ones are. I have 6/14 of the clear level ones.

No, the trophy rainbow isn't linked to the map.

If you google, you can find a list of the hidden trophies.

I just read in Game Imformer that Pixel Junk Mosters is coming out with a new island for the PSP. Wonder if that means it will be on the PS3 as well.

I do hope they port it to the PS3 as DLC but right now it is just for the PSP.
