I can't imagine that the PS3 is incapable of playback of a CD containing mp3 files, but my PS3 doesn't seem to even acknowledge the disc when I insert one.

Is there something specific that I need to do to get it to play??

I know that this is a lame question, and I'm being a thread hog, but can someone help me...Please?:(

Did you remember to close the CD? Do other computers (not the one you burnt it with) recognize the CD?

I tried this with a DVD-R on FW 2.10, and it worked fine. I'm guessing it shouldn't be a problem with CD-R's either.

So I got one of my mp3 discs to work, but it only shows that the disc has 37 tracks, when it actually has about 130. I changed the bit rate on the ps3, but that had no effect.

Also, another one of my mp3 discs is still not "acknowleged" at all:confused:.I put the dis c in, but the PS3 does nothing. What's annoying is that all of these discs play perfectly with my 6 year old DVD player. What gives??????

Do you own a computer. If so why not just copy the MP3 files to the computer and then transfer them to the PS3 by

a) USB drive or
b) Compact Flash/SD memory cards
c) Via your LAN

What seem to be the best way to tranfer/copy files directly from the pc to the ps3? USB cable, LAN,???

Is it possible to simply connect the PC DIRECTLY to the PS3 via a lan cable and transfer mp3's and other files that way??

certainly

I actually attempted that quickly today, but the ps3 made no response. I feel so totally inept when it comes this damn thing!

What would be the procedure to tranfer/copy mp3's from my pc to the ps3 hard drive via LAN?

Thanks for the help...Damn this site is great!!!:)

you would need to use a cross-over cable to connect the PC directly to the PS3.

If you have Windows Media Player version 11 you can stream your music, pictures and videos from your computer to your PS3. I just did it last week and it works great for the MP3s but I am not able to get my ripped DVDs to play without stuttering [but that is another story].

Search for the "Sharing media on a network using Windows Media Player" subject in the Help option in your Windows Media Player version 11 program. It is very easy to setup and it auto adjusts your Windows firewall settings to make it all work safely.

Is it an MP3 formatted disc, or simply a Data Disc?

A few questions/considerations:

first, thank you all for the replies and the help...

1. what is a crossover cable(can i not simply run a lan or usb cable from the pc directly to the ps3 to tranfer/copy mp3's to the ps3 hdd?)
2. The pc that has all of my mp3 files on it is ancient, and has media player 8 or 9.
3. The disc is simply a data disc with mp3 files burnt to it.

are you using triangle to display all?

unless your mp3s are in a "music" folder on the cd, the ps3 doesn't know they are there automatically. so scroll over to the "Data-cd" and use triangle and pick display all... give that a try if you haven't

or, you could also just use your LAN connection to transfer files via tversity, or the other UPnP clients (theres a big thread in here on tversity) its easy to do also. You aren't trans coding MP3s so even an old computer should be fine.

1. A cross-over cable is an ethernet cable, but with the wirings going to different connectors. If you had a crimper or something, you could just cut the end off any ethernet cable you have lying around, and manually change the connections. If you do a google search for 'crossover cable', I'm sure you will find neat diagrams to use.

I doubt running a USB or ethernet cable straight to the computer will work. The PS3 doesn't support that kind of networking (so, crossover/lan connections won't work), and the USB cable solution would probably need proprietary software.

2. I don't think you want to 'stream' the media, but just want to copy it over the the PS3 harddrive right? If so, then ignore all the WMP/Tversity talk.

3. Try the triangle button thing tacom8 suggested. If you get an icon in the PS3 saying "CD", then you should be golden. Just press triangle ---> display all, and you should see all the files on the disk.

If it isn't detecting the disk at all... make sure you closed the disc and so on.

The easiest by far, though, would be to go out an buy one of those thumb-drives and use that instead.

Correct. I do not wish to stream the mp3s, but rather simpy copy them from the pc to the ps3... So, is this achieveable by simply connecting a usb cable or lan cable between the pc and the ps3?

I know this is painfully obvious to most here, and I apologize for being so clueless.
