I have been using a dsp-3100 since christmas, with cinema series 330s and a denon avr-4308.

Solid deep bass response from the sub, more than enough to shake the floor, and still provide a nice seamless soundstage.

i love the sub and it was a good value.

I've been waiting for some chatter about this line for awhile.
I had until this Thursday for full price on my Paradigm PS-1000 sub towards a trade up for a better sub. I opted for the DSP-3400. I won't get it for a couple of days.
My dealer tells me to expect good things. I expect some time to break it in but I look forward to anybody's experience with the DSP series subwoofers.
I'm curious because it seems many Paradigm owners opt for other manufacturers subwoofers. I'm not unhappy with the PS-1000 but Paradigm recommends the DSP-3400 or Ultracube 12 sub with the Monitor 9.5's so I'm going for it.
The PS-1000 was my first experience with a down firing sub......

This appears to be a front firing/front ported sub. can anyone give me the pros and cons of it being front firing.

why will it not perform up to the likes of the hsu & svs in that price range ($500)?

btw. go easy. I have never owned a sub! thanks

These new Paradigm DSP subs perform very well, and do not need to hide from SVS or HSU (price to price).

The DSP3400 uses a 14" driver capable of moving a good bit of air and is not underported like many commercial subs. Retail is around $1000 Canadian, can be had for a fair bit less. Very good buy.

I was quoted ($499 for 3100) & ($699 for the 3200) But like you say, they can be had for less.

How does the 31 & 32 stack up against the hsu?

The HSU VTF2 will have more deep bass output, from around 30Hz up the Paradigm new seris are major performers. The 3400 is quite impressive for a commercial sub. It is the 3400 I would be looking at,this unit goes toe to toe with larger HSU subs.

Paradigm did a great job on these lower cost units.

the 3400 is more then I want to spend ($ 500). I would have bought a hsu or a svs but they only have them in black and I really dont feel like waiting. i just dont want to be disappointed
with the 31or 3200. thanks

I totally agree. I've had my 3400 for three days now. It's still breaking in but now I know what people are talking about when they say 'lower, cleaner' bass. I love this sub!
It's a big move up from the PS-1000 I had. It really boosts the whole soundstage. I'm not looking back....

I like the front firing DSP-3400 better than the down firing PS-1000. I felt the 1000 in the floor and it felt somewhat 'dull' in comparison to the DSP-3400. The 3400 feels like it's coming right at me and it still retain's reasonable 'thump' off the floor. We have to keep in mind that we're talking about a 10" vs. 14" cone. I'm sure that makes a difference somehow. Now I can say from experience I like the front firing better. I'm glad I chose the 3400-great bargain after trade-in. Paradigm's prices have gone up but they still retain their great value.

Hi all. I'm new to this forum and really enjoy it! I bought a DSP3200 and have had it for one week. I'm happy with it but I am considering a swap for the 3400. My dealer will give full credit on the upgrade. My room is 27x19x9 with wood floors and paneling and I'm just not getting enough kick out of the 3200. Per my dealer I've kept the gain at 50%. I've bumped it 75% on a couple of movies and it makes a difference in volume but not so much in the low end feel. I really want that in your chest crunch. Anyway, any opinions about 3200 vs 3400 would be appreciated. I can get the 3400 for a tad over $800. Cheers! :)

The room is 11' wide by 23' long but at 23' it opens up to a step-up kitchen so it's essentially a three walled room. I have berber carpeting in the room. I'm hoping for an audio calibration so I can get the most out of this arrangement.

I dont know about the nsd12 but the 3400 I am very familiar with. It puts out a lot of power and volume so if you have a large room and play loud its great especially for movies . Music wise its not great. Not as musical or tight as Paradigm ultra cube which price point your getting up to with the 3400.

I have the DSP-3100. Its an ok sub but it does not give me the impact im looking for for my movies. Would the DSP-3400 be a much better improvement over the DSP-3100? Or for the price of a DSP-3400 would i be better off looking at say the VTF-3 MK3, Epik Caliber, SB12-Plus? This is mostly for movies. hardly any music.

Thanks,

These are the two I think I am down to (since there will no longer be a Scamp-10 :().

Does anyone have experience with both?

The SVS would cost ~$100 more, would it be worth it?

I have a larger room with vaulted ceilings and the back is open to the kitchen and divided by a 1/2 wall. 19 ft. long x 18 ft wide.I am using a Denon 889 with 3 Paradigm 330's and a Klipsch Sub-12. I ordered a Paradigm 3100 but don't have it yet. Will the 3100 be better than than Sub-12 or should I go to a 3200 or 3400???

Can someone else with a DSP-3100 test something for me?

Play some music on your system not too loud. Put your ear in front of the 3100 So that you can hear it playing. Pause the music while keeping your head there. Does the 3100 make a very low sound that sounds like the ocean in a sea shell for about 5 seconds before going silent?

Thanks. Also since my last post I ruled out everything but the sub itself. Turns out you can pull the LFE/BASS cable right out of the sub and it still makes the "ocean" noise for a few seconds all by itself.

I ended up the the Ultracube 12. I find it is much better than the 3100. Less boomy.

I think you have answered your own quest here... If YOU feel like you want more kick... then you probably do.

my dealer let me try to 3200 for a weekend... I liked it, it was a far cry from my PDR 12. I thought it did a good job in my 20x30x13 room (it is probably much larger than that as it opens up into a kitchen). However, I thought that I could use a bit more kick as well. So when I went back to return the sub, I took my PDR with me... the dealer thought he could get some money for it if he sold it, so he offered me a trade in, and I took it. This purchase actually made my 3400 cost the same as if I had just walked into the store empty-handed and purchased a 3200. I can say from MY experience, that the 3400 DOES sound MUCH better in MY space. Though their amp wattage is the same, the driver is HUGE and the ports are bigger. I have NOT had any port huffing... So far, I have turned DOWN the Sub gain in my reciever and only have my sub gain (on the sub) to 12 o'clock.

My thoughts... If the 3200 was good... the larger driver (even with the same power driving it) would likely move more air... and... it does! Plus... paradigm says that it will extend to um... 19hz (I think... as this is just a rating from them, and I don't have a meeter to measure SPL in my room...)

I don't think you will be disappointed...

Good luck

I'll check tomorrow for you...

I spoke to Paradigm and my local dealer today. The sub should not be making that noise. So It's going back to the dealer for repair.

I'm still very interested to hear what you find with your DSP-3100. If there is that noise or not.

I think this will be my last Paradigm product. What a bunch of BS. Not even 7 days I own the thing and I have to bring it for repair. They will have it for repair longer than I have owned it. That is the best I was offered to solve this problem. If that is how Paradigm does buisness then they won't be doing it with me ever again.

Now I really regret not waiting to save more money and getting an Axiom product.

Let me know, Thanks.

Just an update. My local Paradigm dealer offered me a new dsp-3100 the day after I posted the above post. Makes me wonder if the dealers and manufactuers read all these posts.

Anyway, the new dsp-3100 so far works very well and I'm happy with it so far. It has a very nice sound. The 1st one I had didn't sound this good.

Funny thing is the new one also makes a noise for a few seconds after playing sound just like the 1st one. However it is a much more quiet sound, like low wind. So, I now believe its in the design of the dsp-3100, although my 1st one was broken as the sound was high pitched and much louder. (like the sound of the ocean in a sea shell)

i'm curious what you ended up doing? i have a very similar setup with a 20 x 16 x 9 room with a step up to the kitchen at the back and a 1/2 wall dividing the space. i'm using cinema 330s and cs-60r-30 surrounds off of a denon 2809. yesterday i pulled the trigger on a dsp-3400 and just found this thread. curious as to how you like the system in your space.

anyone else for that matter - how are you liking your dsp subs by now?

by the way, one of my 330s arrived with a small flaw in the piano black finish and the dealer had a new one ordered while i went ahead and kept the flawed one to listen to until the replacement arrived. no questions asked. that's pretty excellent customer service if you ask me.

Hey guys,

Just a quick Q about this sub.

Which input connect does everyone use? The Low Level input or the Sub-In/LFE-In? (sorry never owned a high quality sub).

Also with the standby mode, does anyone have problems waking up the sub? Mine went into standby mode the other night and only way I could get it back on was by unplugging the RCA cable.

Thanks for any helps

Sub In/LFE In is what I use on my DSP 3200. You should have no problem waking it from Stand By mode. It usually takes a couple seconds at the most to get sound from the sub when it wakes.
