I am new to this forum, and just have a basic question that i'd like some help answering. My system includes a Marantz SR4600 receiver, a SVS PB10-NSD sub, two in-ceiling R/L speakers(not sure of brand), and a Polk Audio CS1 center channel speaker. I listen mostly to music, but enjoy movies. I have calibrated my channels using the receivers internal test tones at 75dB. I am satisfied the sound, but have a question with regards to fine tuning the bass. My receiver has a bass/treble adjustment option on the remote control, but I am unsure where this adjustment fits into the overall calibration of the system. The range of adjustment is from -6 to +6. Is this something I should adjust, or should I set it to 0 and forget about it. Adjusting the bass control seems to increase the volume of the bass, but i was under the assumption that my initial calibration (bass channel volume set to -5) took care of this, and thus am confused as to what this adjustment actually does, and if I should avoid using to help decrease the amount of distortion sent to my subwoofer. I hope you folks understand my rambling, and would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Bass and treble controls are for adjusting to taste or to compensate for something lacking in the source recording. You should set them to 0, calibrate your system, then use them only when needed. Not all source material is recorded the same, so these can help at times. Remember to set back to 0 when done.

Most receivers use the tone controls to boost the output levels of your mains at around 100 and 10,000 hz respectively. They are designed to be used primarily in the stereo mode when a sub isn't being implemented. I suggest you leave it at 0 and use your subs line level adjustment to control your bass output, keeping your speakers response as flat as possible.
