View Full Version : Buying a Denon 3808CI - now need speakers!
johnstonamerica 01-25-08, 01:25 PM My gosh, hope I don't get too beat up here for posting "yet another" help me thread :)
I've just spent waay too long researching receivers and have decided the Denon 3808 will be my choice.
In the interest of not starting my research completely from scratch again, is there anyone out there w/ this rec'r that has found an amazing speaker solution?
From what I read on the 3808 thread, some seem to like the Klipsch for the Denons. I have had Boston Acoustic and Infinity in the past but we are talking many years ago now.. :)
I am not asking for absolute specific setups (unless you'd like to post what you have) more like what should I obviously rule out immediately, etc..
I have a Sony 46XBR4, Sony DVD NS77H, Dish 622DVR, XBox 360...
Thanks in advance to anyone who'd like to reply, sorry to those who have seen a million of these posts already :o
jbrinegar 01-25-08, 01:37 PM Im in the same boat as you are. I am looking at Klipsch reference, Mirage v2, and Aperion speakers.
I really love the sound of the Polk Audio RTI series.
I have also heard some Axioms that sounded amazing, but were out of my price range.
what installation and listening arrangement will these speakers be subjected to:
Not considering how they sound (which should ultimately be the determinig factor!)
1) in wall/in ceiling? or floor standing??
2) you have space for larger or do you require compact design
3) what about appearance - if not going with the custom flush-mount - is your preference a contemporary, traditional, rustic, etc... like do they need to match the furniture for the WAF.
Fists_of_Legend 02-01-08, 12:25 PM I just completed a Denon 3808ci / Kef iQ setup and am VERY pleased!
I would also look a monitor Audio, PSB, NHT.
Major Nelson 02-01-08, 12:33 PM I went with Axioms and love them. I like a warm neutral speake and find Klipsch to be way too bright. I've never heard Aeperions, but many had told me they were bright as well. My setup is M60s, VP150, and QS8s. Sub is a HSU 3.3. Couldn't be happier with my setup.
Solid-State 02-01-08, 01:57 PM I would take a look at the EOL Mirage Omni line that's currently on sale online at AMAZING price points. IMHO I wouldn't touch Klipsch and their decades old horn tweeter design that's totally "bright" and HARSH... I can't stand the sound their speakers produce even after the hours and hours it takes to break those bloody horns in. If your looking for smooth evenly balanced sound please take a look at the Mirage Omni 550 and other Omni line to timbral match them. Omni 550s can be had at amazing prices right now. A good analogy between the two would be comparing Grado headphones to Senhauser. Sure the Grados produce very accurate sound like say studio monitors but at the cost of reveling recording flaws etc and sounding what some deem "harsh" The Sens on the other hand are "smooth" and subtle and are way way less fatiguing to listen to. I guess in the end it all comes down to taste. Also in terms of placement the Mirage Omni's due to their omnipolar design are way more forgiving with regard to room placement and room acoustics.

What is your budget? I wouldn't worry too much about what brands 'match' the Denon receiver, get whatever speakers sound best to you.
However, we need your budget in order to make relevant recommendations.

Hmmm..... Evidently some people don't like Klipsch Speakers but a lot of people who enjoy quality sound being powered by their Denons do. I have 3 Klipsch/Denon Home Theaters and like the combination. Btw, Klipsch speakers do not require a break-in period.
escdoc88 02-02-08, 03:03 PM Look at internet direct sales. Check out AV123 they have a wide selection of speakers
and prices.Click on the community tab and look at the forums.New products are offered of the av123 forum initailly for greatly reduced prices.I was able to pick up a pair of Ref1 and have on order a Ref100 and 2 ULW10Se subs all priced about 60%
off during a Christmas Special.I have an Onkyo 905 and they sound great for bookshelf monitors, previously I had Martin Logan SL3s but my wife wanted smaller
speakers.I loved the Martin Logans and was worried i would not find a monitor I would like. I audition KEF,Mirage,Klipsch and B&W and The I am very pleased with the Ref 100s. On the av123 forum check out the new ELT 525 in the thread "Introducing the new ELT525 Reference Class Mini Monitor... "
DeusExa 02-02-08, 07:10 PM Another vote for the Polk RTi series for HT...the new ones and the old are both great!
For BOTH music and HT, go with LSi series.
Axiom Here. I have a Denon 4308ci. I am running 7.1. M80's, VP150 Center, and QS8's for surrounds. I use my older Polk RTi7's for back surrounds.
deckerm 02-02-08, 09:48 PM i have my eyes on the B&W 703s.
Ethan06 02-03-08, 02:43 AM 2808 here with some B&W 683s.
Hey deckerm, I was gonna go B&W 700s too but I have heard rumors of an update to the 700 series soon, since they are now the oldest B&W series out and are to close in performance to the new 600s. Just a thought. Still a great choice though if you can't wait.
