Just curious about where your favorite sites are to check out reviews on HD DVD's. I'm interested in maybe picking up some older titles, but want to make sure it's worth it - quality wise.
Thanks!

Thanks! sound dropouts 01-25-08, 02:55 PM digitalbits! :D j/k, btw bflip1080 01-25-08, 03:07 PM Highdefdigest.com and there are some good threads on avs here that talk about PQ/AQ as well as problems like DNR, EE, banding and the works. lrstevens421 01-25-08, 03:10 PM Highdefdigest.com My favorite as well. Followed by dvdtown. dm145 01-25-08, 03:30 PM [QUOTE]and there are some good threads on avs here that talk about PQ/AQ [QUOTE] not really unless you like fighting beerisgood 01-25-08, 03:39 PM I like dvdtalk Hipnotiq 01-25-08, 03:41 PM http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/reviews.html I dont always agree with the review of the movie itself, but the picture/audio quality along with extras is excellent. bflip1080 01-25-08, 03:46 PM [QUOTE]and there are some good threads on avs here that talk about PQ/AQ [QUOTE] not really unless you like fighting well i like these threads http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=937873 http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=942015 and on the latter thread there can be some dicussion on what movie should be in what tier, but i wouldn't say fighting. there are sometimes several reviews for each movie so you can get a few different takes. MasterThrawn 01-25-08, 04:03 PM Wow - thanks for all the replies. I'll check these out when I can:) Nice to have a good resource like this site. Rach 01-25-08, 05:12 PM Highdefdigest.com and there are some good threads on avs here that talk about PQ/AQ as well as problems like DNR, EE, banding and the works. Highdefdigest.com is one of the worst. Let's not forget "March of the Penguins" was 4.5/5 PQ. R-i-g-h-t. I couldn't disagree more with Mr. Bracke. However, ***************.com is a great site! Tom Monahan 01-26-08, 11:58 AM www.***************.com They review using high quality 1080p front projectors and you can ask them questions about their reviews. If those titles had been in Universal's catalog, they'd likely be out by now,but for whatever reason Paramount has they've been really stingy with releasing many decent catalog titles of their own.Maybe, by some chance a Paramount exec that has somethig to do with making such decisions will read this and help get some of those great titles released in HD-DVD. devotiondoubt 01-29-08, 07:37 PM I have to say that I started looking around for a new review site after reading Bracke's review of Kingdom of Heaven on hidefdigest.com. It reads like a 18 year old wrote it. So thanks for the suggestions about other sites and apologies to any decent 18 year old writers. JaylisJayP 01-29-08, 08:44 PM dvdauthority and themanroom.com are good. dvdverdict is pretty good, as well. Id love to know why Josh left DVDTalk for a move to HDD, he took a big step back IMO. LpChaos 01-30-08, 11:17 AM Id love to know why Josh left DVDTalk for a move to HDD, he took a big step back IMO. I can only say I know the reason why only because I found out when I was in California (when I spoke with a member of DvdTalk). Not sure if I should mention it, but a quick thought on writing for other sites while writing on one site should answer the ? for you. I don't usually do plugs, but I write for highdefdiscnews. We've been gaining respect and popularity since we both went to the Blu-Ray Festival in October. :) Josh Z 01-30-08, 02:29 PM I can only say I know the reason why only because I found out when I was in California (when I spoke with a member of DvdTalk). Please, do tell. I'm dying to find out. ;) SomethingMore 01-30-08, 02:36 PM DVDTalk is the only site I regularly check for reviews. I'll read specific reviews at HDD if someone directs me there, but I never just 'browse' the site. One of my favourite negative non-hd reviews is for The Hillz (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=15101&___rd=1), but there's very few "bad" reviews, in terms of the quality of writing. :) edit: I want to know why Josh left, too. :( Josh Z 01-30-08, 08:40 PM edit: I want to know why Josh left, too. :( Awww, thanks for caring. :D There's no great controversy here. I liked the crew at DVDTalk and left there on good terms, but after weighing the options decided that High-Def Digest better suited my interests. Nothing more scandalous about it than that. oh_riginal 01-31-08, 05:20 PM Highdefdigest.com is one of the worst. Let's not forget "March of the Penguins" was 4.5/5 PQ. R-i-g-h-t. I couldn't disagree more with Mr. Bracke. However, ***************.com is a great site! Bracke seems to bash a lot of good movies too (not PQ/AQ, but the films themselves). I can't think of any examples, but I know he generally dislikes a LOT of movies it seems like. Not just guilty pleasure movies either! I don't know if this is still practiced on that website, but I do recall a few times that movies that were disliked seemed to automatically get a lower score on PQ, regardless of how good it actually was. MrKiller 01-31-08, 09:41 PM Highdefdigest is the best, DVDtown is also good. Rach 02-01-08, 11:15 AM Bracke seems to bash a lot of good movies too (not PQ/AQ, but the films themselves). I don't know if this is still practiced on that website, but I do recall a few times that movies that were disliked seemed to automatically get a lower score on PQ, regardless of how good it actually was. I couldn't agree more. There was a time when I would look at all of his scores and assume the opposite was true...in all categories: film, video, and audio. It was that bad. Now he has a couple of other reviewers that aren't nearly as bad...but Mr. Bracke and I never see eye to eye. Many times I wonder if he actually watched the movie he is so off on video quality. Again, hometheatherspot.com is one of the best if not the best. rboster 02-01-08, 11:48 AM The one thing I've found with review sites on the net is it's helpful to have an idea of the equipment one is using to conduct the reviews. At times, I've been in total disagreement with the PQ noted in a review, once you see their set up, you realize the conditions are different than yours. ie 30" tv vs 120" screen. One could on and on about other attributes that make up the reviewers incite etc... I tend to read reviews from Widescreen Review. You know their set up is calibrated and tweaked to the appropriate n'th degree. Plus, the reviewers know what they are looking for in image and sound. I use their scoring system as my benchmark. Do we always seem the samethings...no....but in most cases I'll watch an SD or HDM and go to the mag to see how they compared it...(though they have a more discerning eye), I usually have a similar "take" on the image. |
