View Full Version : Need advice on my first Front Projector (gaming/sports)
freshnsoclean 01-25-08, 06:11 PM What I have - I'm coming from a Mitsubishi ws55859 which was recommended from here around 6 years ago and I don't regret that TV one bit. To this day it still looks good to me, but I know it could be better. It's starting to fade a bit around the edges and I'm not sure if the 1080i is true 1080i or upconverted. The time has come to move on to bigger and better.
What I want - I've been lurking and doing my own research the past couple weeks. I've read great things about the Mitsu-HC1500 and the InFocus 7210. I know they only do 720p, but they seem to be the best bang for the buck. I will be using this for 70% gaming on my 360(not the elite and using monster components) and 30% sports/tv/dvd. I'm looking to stay under $2000. If there are some decent 1080p's around (HC4900?) that price range I will pull the trigger if there are no frame rate issues. Lighting and space won't be a problem. I could paint the wall white or I will be building my own screen via multiple guides off this site. I will be sitting around 10-17ft away. I don't know how big I should be making the screen, I'll have to read up more on that.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm looking forward to playing some COD4 on my new setup. Thanks
Here is advice that you need before buying: after you decide on the projector, stay far away from the projector threads at AVS. Take it from someone who A. doesn't practice what he preaches B. has bought ten projectors over the past four or five years. :D

I won't dread if there's bigger and better shortly after my purchase. I'll be researching on making sure I have all my ducks in a row to get the best pic quality possible. The hard thing is choosing what to do get. After that is done, I'll be fine.

For sports and gaming the 4900 rocks. Very sharp! If you are going to watch a lot of movies, you may want to look at the HC5000 or Sanyo Z2000. Projector People and Visual Apex have them at your price range (after rebate or with discounts). For what it's worth. I've found the 4900 to perform better with SD DVD than my VW50, VW60, or AE2000u due to it's extra bit of sharpness.

I'm not a big movie guy. To be honest, if there's a movie I want to watch, I'll order it on HD ON DEMAND. I'm a big vids/sports kind of guy.
If I do roll with the 4900, will I have to buy my own mounting kit or does it come with one?
Circuit City/Best Buy have it for $2000 after rebates. I may have to call in sick to work tomorrow if I pick this up tonight
Save $500 and buy it from a Forum Sponsor......
Check this POST (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12867239#post12867239) for an inexpensive but good quality mount.

You can get it from Projector People for $1399 after rebate (tell them you are an AVS Forum Member), free shipping. Use the savings for a mount and Mack Warranty if that is what you want.. :D
I purchased an 'Open Box', $1167 after rebate and I'm going to buy a Mack Bulb Warranty for $100. My Credit Card adds 1 year, total of 3 years covered.

Just to add on here, will these play XBox360/PS3 games well to? Or would it be better to go with the 4900 for Video games as the first priority and to keep movies the 2nd priority on it? Don't want to threadcrap just asking.
Um...yeah, it can. $1,400 after rebates at Projector People...all of the stuff listed below isn't worth an extra $500 on the price.
