How many of you set your cable or satellite box to 1080i and send that 1080i signal to your native 720p projector? Do you see any difference in picture quality when sending that video signal 1080i instead of 720p? What 720p projector do you have?

It should be better sending 720p to 720p because there is no up or down converting. Native should be better.
But I do not see a difference between 1080i and 720p And I have a sharp DT-500.So what ever looks the best to you do it

Try both and do what looks best. There is really no rule of thumb because there are so many different combinations of set top boxes and projectors. If the projector does better with converting the signals to 720p you may want to send it 1080i. Personally I have 720 going to my projector because it looks smoother for football. I think the set top box does a better job scaling everything to 720 and the projector handles 720 better than 1080!.
So let your eyes do the judging.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, 1080i looks better on my HC1500.
It all depends on the math that your boxes use to get there.

There would be conversion for channels broadcasting in 1080i, the cable box would have to convert it to 720p.
The answer to the OP is that it depends on which device does the conversion the best, the cable box or the display. In most cases it will be the display, but you should try both and compare. I prefer to set the output to the same resolution as the channel uses (i.e 720p for ABC/ESPN and 1080i for CBS/Discovery, etc). But with the Motorola DVR Comcast uses, it's a PITA to do so, so I usually just leave it at 1080i since that generally works better with my display.

Worth repeating.
And,
"Contrary to conventional wisdom, 1080i looks better on my HC1500."
This holds true for my Sharp DT-500 also with HDDVD and Bluray.
