View Full Version : Panasonix AX-200 VS Epson HC 720!
eightninesuited 01-25-08, 10:22 PM I know I want one of them. But which? In Canada, there's a really good deal on the Epson 720, where I can get the projector for $1199 (after rebate) + a free bulb. I like Epson's waranty as well.
The AX200 has 1080p24 input acceptance from my PS3, which would be beneficial. It also has better blacks and from the pics I saw for both reviews, looks to have better picture than the 720. But it's also much more expensive in Canada. Help.
Edit: Can the mods edit the title. Panasonic, not with an x. :)
Edit: Oop, looks the Epson Cinema 720 accepts both 1080p60 and 1080p24.

I would think it would make more sense to leave the X and not edit it out, even though the X is not used in Canada dont you want input from USA owners ?
Just a thought.

redfuse 01-26-08, 05:46 AM I think he meant he put down panasoniX instead of panasoniC.
Did you see the HC720 review on projectorcentral already? It has a direct comparison with the ax200 there as well...

Yea, I read all the reviews. I think I'll probably end up getting the Epson. The AX200 seems to be having multiple number of issues that obviously wasn't fixed from the AX100. That "AX200 issues" thread is getting mighty big".
biglyle 01-26-08, 02:41 PM Having seen both of these, along with the 1080UB, I choose the HC720. It had better blacks than the panny, was cheaper, better warranty and reliability record. The 720 and and the 1080 were not anywhere near as different as I expected either. Yes, the 1080 had better blacks, but unless you them side to side you would never know this.
As for 1080/24. I agree entirely with this statement from projector central. It imo is far, far, overvalued in importance compared to real world results.
"the lack of 1080p/24 compatibility generates the same response as the lack HDMI 1.3 .... so what? 1080p/24 transmission certainly has the beneficial effect of reducing judder artifacts in some scenes in which the camera is panning at a moderate speed. Panning sequences can be smoother because 1080p/24 transmission eliminates the need to convert the 24 frame per second film to 30 frame per second video. However, these judder artifacts become evident only occasionally. If the camera is panning slowly enough, or as in most cases not at all, the conversion to 30 fps happens cleanly enough to make the conversion invisible. If the camera is panning rapidly, there is so much visual confusion that the conversion becomes buried in blur and rapid action, so again it is irrelevant. In the vast majority of film scenes there is no way to tell whether the material is being displayed in 1080p/24 or 1080p/60.
In short, 1080p/24 transmission does not, in and of itself, generate a substantially improved image over 1080p/60. Yes, 1080p/24 helps smooth out the panning motion in some scenes, and of course it should be a standard feature on all high-performance, high-priced home theater projectors. But there are other factors that are much more significant contributors to overall picture quality than 1080p/24 transmission (resolution, image sharpness, color balance, contrast, lack of digital noise to name a few). It is certainly possible to have one projector delivering a film in 1080p/60 and another projector next to it delivering the same film in 1080p/24, with the projector using 1080p/60 producing the more satisfying image. So the issue needs to be kept in perspective. "
I think he meant he put down panasoniX instead of panasoniC.
Ahh, my bad, I thought it was a model number difference between Canada and the US, I did not notice the mispleling.
I feel kinda dumbass like right now.

ajaxmike 01-28-08, 12:08 PM I just ordered the Epson (my second choice was the Sanyo followed by the Panasonic). My decision was based on the free bulb, 2 year replacement warranty (Panny=1, Sanyo=3), and the higher light output over the Sanyo. The online reviews indicate that they are all excellent projectors at the price point, but the Epson seemed to edge out the others unless you needed the higher light output of the Panny or prefered the soft pixel technology.
RobbyTV 02-04-08, 06:00 AM i also like the warranty of the Epson. You can use this projector as a everyday TV and not worry about it. To bad Pany doesn't have the same warranty as the Epson... because that would of given me another option. Sanyo is something to stay away from in my opnion. plus the free spare bulb with the Epson is a much better deal than the Blockbuster rebate that Pany has. every projector should include a spare bulb.

dreamstate 02-06-08, 08:28 AM eightninesuited, where are you getting the deal on the Epson from in CAN?
I was making the same choice back in December with the same considerations. I ended up getting the Epson, because of the reliability concerns with the Panasonic. Two months later I have no regrets and would make the same choice again.

kazinvan 02-06-08, 06:51 PM PM me as well if you could, in Vancouver here. Thanks!
RobbyTV 02-07-08, 06:10 PM The Cinema 720 has superior contrast and much deeper black level, as well as more accurate color.
this was from an expert review.
^^ +1

I'd love to know where you were getting the Epson for that price too.
Anyone know how bad the screen door effect is on the Epson? I'm fairly sensitive to it, and as a result I've always gravitated to the Panny's just because of the smooth screen technology.
I'd love a PM as well.
Group buy?
Infamous1 08-22-08, 03:55 AM it's $1299 before rebate pretty much everywhere guys.
As for SDE, i can see it if i look for it but i dont have 20/20 vision so i cant see it unless i'm 5-6 feet away. Around 10feet it's not noticeable for me but it may be for others?
