I looked at the Pioneer Elite series but it seems they chose an outdated product.

Any thoughts? I didn't see a thread with this subject.

The flagship Denon and Onkyo have great scalers. They do the basic scaling very well. Now when you want to have lots of VP features such as a CMS special scaling for an anamorphic lens, you will probably need to move up to a standalone VP.

my answer is no, in a simple system you might get by with a simple receiver or pre-amp based scaler, they are crippled and worthless in most cases, not that the actual quality of "Scaling" is horrible, they just don't really qualify as "Scalers" and are IMHO for convenience only

I agree to some point with the above. I think the receivers qualify as scalers, as they upscale and transvert just fine as well as decent interlacing. I don't think they qualify as Video Processors as they are bare-bones in functionality. They upscale and deinterlace in standard formats nothing else.
