View Full Version : Yellow hue during motion
Hemlock1080 01-26-08, 11:07 PM Anyone else notice a yellow/green hue on the edges of people or objects while in motion. I've noticed it during Letters from Iwo Jima on the edge of one of the actors while he was moving across screen. I have a Panasonic
PZ700U and have only used it roughly 50 hours.
Thanks
Phosphor lag. You have very sensitive eyes if you actually see this and will need to look at other technologies for your display purposes.
Hemlock1080 01-26-08, 11:38 PM Thanks for the reply, but I'm not sure what you mean. Is phospor lag normal, or is it a defect? And it's very apparent while watching certain scenes and I think I also noticed it while watching hockey. Also, what do you mean by other technologies?
Phosphor lag is inherent to plasma tech. It's like when people see rainbows with color wheel based DLP displays. It is not a defect.
Other technologies are LCD, LCoS, SXRD, DLP (non-color wheel types), etc.

Very few people see this effect (it is called fringing) and odds are that if you can see it, then LCD motion blur and DLP rainbows will bother you as well. It comes down to which bothers you the least. (I chose fringing as it isn't constant like LCD motion blur and only apears during high contrast scenes.)
It is basically a "pick your poison" choice for those with good eyes. :(
Hemlock1080 01-26-08, 11:48 PM So my first option on going with a Panny AE200U projector was the better choice. Oh well it's done now. So this isn't model specific, it's just Plasma. I would assume it's the trade off from seeing digital artifacts in LCDs'.
Thanks for the input.
6SpeedTA95 01-26-08, 11:49 PM Just FYI you may look at the sony SXRD rear projection sets. They dont have a color wheel....RBE on DLP's bothers me as does the blooming, but SXRD doesn't suffer from that...it may be worth a look if phospher lag bothers you.
Hemlock1080 01-26-08, 11:59 PM It's alright for now, as long as it's not a defect, I think it's small price to pay in comparison to how good the picture is overall.
Thanks again

I see the trails on my Panny 58 inch plasma too. I also can't stand DLP's for the rainbow effect. The trails on the plasma occur under specific conditions, and I can overlook them given the overall great picture the set has. I went through hell with 3 defective Sony SXRD's, and I can tell you that the plasma has a better overall PQ in my opinion, plus a better reliability record.
Ozymandis 01-27-08, 02:22 AM I see the trails as well. And also DLP rainbows. Like other said, it seems like if you have eyes trained to motion you will have issues with these technologies. But for me it was not a deal-breaker. It's most obvious in high-contrast scenes. Check out the movie Renaissance if you want to really screw with yourself. I watched it on my DLP and that made up my mind to take that set back. Saw the yellow trails on plasma but I get used to it.
It's mostly the really high contrast (black/white) scenes in movies that give me trouble. Like in Gears of War, the beginning sequence, it's basically ok on my plasma, the part where he's in the cell and the monsters are running through the light shining down. On DLP it was unwatchable.

Take this for what it's worth, just my personal observation....
I too have eyes like yours, and I first had the very same Panasonic that you have. The yellow trails were awful so it was very difficult to keep the display. I loved the plasma tech though, so I tried a new Pioneer. I would have to say that the problem is still there for me, but it is only about 25-50% as severe as it was with the Panasonic. Much improvement and worth keeping for sure.

agreed. i'm very sensitive to the yellow trails and chose the pioneer over all other displays. doesn't bother me as much as motion blur and rainbows.

Yea this hue / trailing occurred on my previous panny 77U and current pio 5080 although it's not as bad on the 5080. luckily I rarely notice it during movies but I see it more often when playing video games (depends on the game).
Hemlock1080 01-27-08, 09:04 PM Is this something you would find on a projector?
As I had mentioned I originally was all prepared to buy a projector, but changed last minute.
Would any of you know off hand the picture difference between a 1080 plasma (panny pz700U) and an lcd projector say the AE200U?
Thanks again for the help
Ivy Mike 02-20-08, 11:19 PM I'm seeing something like the yellow hue on edges (only slightly prominent on some scenes, mainly in blu-ray features -ps3 through hdmi). Only thing is, I'm on an LCD, so I'm not sure it's the same "phosphor lag." Is that a problem exclusive to plasmas, or no? I have a Sharp 32" LCD playing at 1080p.
