OK, so there are great deals out there to be had. Some jumping ship due to Warner on the E, Warner's own 25% off, other BOGO's etc. I basically steered clear of committing too much to HD DVD myself waiting for the smoke to clear. However, I am now buying up any titles I want and find at good prices.
Why?
Well, I had an epiphany last week. I took the absolute worst -case scenario and thought about what I'd do. Here's what I came up with:
Let's say HD DVD goes away completely and it occurs fairly quickly. I still have two players in my home. So, they won't last forever. I am still convinced at least one or two manufacturers (Toshiba at the very least) will continue to make players/drives that support the format and I'll be able to watch my HD DVDs indefinitely. And, if not, I could at least find an HD DVD computer drive and buy the software to rip the movies to my computer and burn them to BD-R at sometime in the future (assuming that "fair use" is still legal:)).
Given that, I am taking advantage of all the deals I can find.
