My coworker just got one of these dvd recorders and he's wondering how good of an upscaling chip it has. I looked around a bit on the web and don't see any information on what chipset they use. He was guessing based on the fact that the HD DVD players from Toshiba are exceptional upscalers that this one might be too.

Thanks in advance.

The upscaling in most DVD players is mediocre to poor. The Toshiba DR550 does not share anything in common with the Toshiba HD-DVD players, aside from the brand.

Nobody knows jack schit?I think I was in the Army with him.

My Panasonic EH75V DVD recorder does a pretty darned good job of upscaling - but that ain't gonna help him now in any way - unless he wants to buy one used off of Amazon for $1800.00.

The Philips DVDR3575H and Magnavox H2080MW8 DVD recorders I tried had terrible upscaling. They actually looked worse in anything other than 480i over s-video. And, like the Toshiba's, those were made by Funai, also.
