Someone gave me an old Faroudja CFD-N and I can't tell what it does. Is this thing totally obsolete? What exactly does it do? There is virtually no information about it on the web.

It's a transcoder. It takes your component signal and makes it RGB, an input commonly found in crt projectors, crt computer monitors(I believe RGB is very similar to VGA as well...Not sure though), and also on the occasional consumer plasma/lcd.
