View Full Version : Bourne Identity-help! Do you see a problem in Chapter 1 and following?

OK, thousands have seen the HDDVD of Bourne Identity (included in the Toshiba HDDVD ) and I need some advice, because I screwed something up in "updating" the firmware apparently. When I went through the ethernet and hit update, I ended up with superior sound, but when reviewing Bourne Identity (B.I.) right after, I noticed in Chapter 1 (about 1:40 and ff into Ch. 1) where they are pulling him out of the water, the guy's heads have a halo effect with motion (not there before)...halo in that with head motion, there is a triple white line "halo" trailing after the head. It continues into the chapter at various times in the boat anfd following, and is quite obvious. When I disconnected the Toshiba A-35 deck from the Denon 3808ci AVR and connected the Toshiba A-35 directly into my Sony A3000, the shadow-lines were NOT present. BTW, I used an alternate HDMI cable to hook up the A-35.
So I assume it is NOT the Tosh A-35. I am assuming that it is either the HDMI cable or thr Denon 3808ci. But the change came right after I did the update of the Tosh A-35 and the Denon and HDMI were just fine previously.

Would some of you folks care to weigh in on what you would troubleshoot this as, please? Man, this is frustrating.

Another problem is in the Bourne Identity again, in the chapter in the board room with the dark brown wood paneling, with verticle cuts/lines. With motion, in any setting except with motion enhancer set to HIGH, some of the wood paneling TOTALLY obliterates in a big chunk...just goes to a light tan blob ! Weird. Has anyone seen anything like this on their unit?

Thanks for any advice !;)

What version of firmware did you update to? I have an XA2 with version 2.8 and I don't see that problem.

Interesting point. I do not believe that I ran anything that high, but could be wrong. I just updated on Sunday...and it stated 39/39 or 39 of 39...not sure if that is bites or 39 patches??? This confuses the heck out of me !

All I know is that AFTER the firmware update, it looked like the guys' heads were moving through Saran Wrap (ghosting around the heads with movement-surreal). I may check the HDMI cable. It was in there tightly. I have a Belden Blue Jeans cable running 20' but they claim success at 40'...and my tv also shares that HDMO...and it is great.

No signs on my copy via my A2/HDMI.

Not since I got the movie (XMAS w/ 2.5 FW at the time) or now with 2.8. Just rewatched this last weekend.

Looked excelent.

I'm checking the menu on B.I. tonight I'll look for your "halo's" also. I'm running an A3 with 1.3 I think.

Also, what display are you using? Is there some sort of Edge Enhancement, or some other "feature" that might have been turned on?

I have a Sony 60A3000, which supports HDMI 1.3/24p; the player is the Toshiba HDDVD A-35; my AVR is the Denon 3808ci, supposedly completely compatible.
I have absolute minimunm edge enhancement, or no enhancement, but let me reiterate that when I pulled the HDDVD and attached it straight into the TV (not through the Denon AVR) I DID NOT experience the funky halo/light lines around the head with motion (w/ motion ONLY time it manifests). That is why I think it may be either the Denon AVR or an HDMI gone-bad...or something happened when I did that firmware update.

Solved the problem by process of elimination...it was a bad "Monster" HDMI cable...$79. for a 6.6 ft. length. Ironically, guess what I replaced it with in order to get proper operation ? Yup...a total cheapo freebie, included in a Directv satellite box (musta been a Chinese HDMI...no gold coated, no nylon coating length, etc.)
OK, so moral to story...buy AVS Forum HDMI cables...Monoprice or Blue Jeans.;)

Glad you got it figured out.
