Hello all, I am new here and just bought a new 1080p HDTV. I am wondering what I need to buy to make my XBOX run in HD. Thanks for any responses.

that depends on your tv, some 1080p HDTV's will only produce a 1080p image through HDMI and some will do it through HDMI and Component Video, so i would say to check the manual and see what it says...

and you can use any HDMI cable, not the Microsoft one, unless you plan on hooking this up to a home theater system...

and don't forget you have to set the Xbox to display in 1080p in the dashboard, under system settings then display...

You could also just hook up the 360 with the component cable you probably already have, set the 360 to 720p, and let the TV do the scaling. The quality difference between that and hooking up a 360 over HDMI or any of the 1080p capable outputs (if you can navigate the speciakl requirements!) tends to be minimal.

why in the world would he set the xbox to 720p unless he knew for a fact his tv didnt accept 1080p over component?

Jesus, seriously? I was telling him the easiest thing to do that is garaunteed to work, uses the parts he already has, and will give good image quality. Sure, there might be better ways to hook it up, and maybe better settings, but we don't have enough info to fully inform him.

Nice to see you jump on me, Formula, yet offer no help of your own. Way to go!

Use either the component cables which should have come with it or get an HDMI cable (provided you have a system with HDMI which I imagine you do). You can always get inexpensive HDMI cables from monoprice.com. Also, if using component, make sure you select the HDTV switch setting. Some people forget to do that.

If you don't have an xbox with HDMI you can also use VGA for HD-Gaming up to 1080p (1920x1080) if you have a TV that supports it. Chances are, since you just purchased the HD-TV, it will be able to do 1080p over component for games if you don't have an HDMI box... that is what I would try first.

Post back and let us know what type of HD-TV you do have... and it will make this a lot easier.... or you could just do the research for yourself. Note that all HD cables avaliable for the 360 will allow you to game in 1080p (IE: component, VGA, or HDMI). It really depends more on your TV than on the xbox itself. HDMI is the only sure fire way to get 1080p regardless of the type of TV (as all 1080p TVs will accept a 1080p signal over HDMI). The problem occurs because not all TVs will accept 1920x1080 resolution over VGA... and some are limited to 1080i over component. This particular problem is dying out... but these sets are definitely still around.

So the short answer is... If you have an Xbox 360 Elite, or a standard Xbox 360 Premium (rather than a "Core"), you already have everything you need to achieve high definition visuals.

If you have an Xbox 360 with an HDMI port, you can just use an HDMI cable. If you lack the HDMI port, you should use the component cable (the red/green/blue one). Set the switch on the component cable to "HD", then in the Xbox 360 Dashboard, pick a resolution; do not leave it at the default 480p. Try 1080p first, and if that doesn't work, go with 720p.

I have the new LG 42LBX and I have an XBOX core system. I think I am going to buy the component cable to go from XBOX to the TV, I heard the microsoft cable sucks is that true? Anyone know of anything better?

The MS cable is fine.

According to this spec sheet you should be able to get 1080p over component. Otherwise you could always get a VGA cable from Monoprice too, that is if you want to upscale DVDs.

Just went to Monoprice and bought the XBOX component cable, $14 better than the $40 MS one.
