I paid $300 for my PS3. I don't know what everyone else's problem is.

Lossless audio for Fox titles would be my problem with your solution.

why do you think toshiba sold their player $150 ?

The same reason Sony prices the PS3 @ 299 ;)

AFAIK the PS3 was never sold at 299 $, its price being 399 $
thats 2.66 time the 150 $

My bad! Thought there was a $299 PS3.

It does not matter the price difference, both are/were HEAVILY subsidized. Except Toshiba never posted a loss on thier books (taking the hundreds of MILLIONs that keeps getting reported). Sony on the hand has a 3.8 billion hole to come out off.

Anyway what I wanted to suggest is that toshiba sold their player 150 $ because consumers weren't willing to buy them for more than that.

If HD DVD had been gaining momentum they wouldn't have had to sell it for 150$

But as posted elsewhere, those of us with PS3s (I don't wish to open up the "I don't want one" stuff again) can get most of the way there now (and maybe further if Sony pushes out a couple more FW) and wait for 2.0 BD players to be more widely available.

A PS3 is not to everyone's tastes, likes, finances, not doing analog out, not looking like a piece of HT art etc (I think I covered all the bases there.... :)).

No, don't hurt me.....

Does your new AppleTV support any lossless codecs?

Lastly, weren't you in the group that said Transformers lossy audio was "more than adequate"?

No, my Apple TV does not support lossless codecs. I purchased the Apple TV for convenient rentals and to stream my lossless audio that is ripped to my computer. I do not see it as a replacement for optical media. It is just another option in my system. The unit does deliver the best quality that the iTunes store has to offer, and that's fine for how I will use it.

I wasn't really into the Transformers discussion regarding audio. My general take has always been that, even if I couldn't tell the difference between lossless and DD+, I'd prefer it to be lossless because I believe there's more depth to audio than can be readily heard through A/B comparisons. Some HD DVD supporters took issue with my position, but I do stand by it. Since I do find the audio on Transformers and King Kong HD DVDs to be quite good, I never would pass on a disc due to lack of lossless.

I have an A2, and it not having DTS HD support bothered me until now, but since HD DVD is dead, it is unlikely that I'll have any more discs with which I can't get full audio support. If HD DVD had continued, I would have purchased a player that supported all codecs.

Things are different with Blu-ray. Fox does most (all?) of their titles with DTS advanced audio codecs. To not have the highest quality for releases from a major studio is a deal-breaker for me at this point in the game. Panasonic players seem the most appealing to me, but the LFE bug for PCM titles (Disney and others) keeps me from considering them at this point. If the PS3 gets DTS HD support, it will be the only acceptable Blu-ray player for my needs based on what is currently available.

It seems that you replied to me as a sort of "gotcha" related to format war talk. Please give it a rest. One of my basic principles with A/V is that I want access to the best a format has to offer. I even have HDCD support in my system for a handful of CD titles I have that are encoded that way. When I get into Blu-ray, the player will have to support all audio. When I got my A2 last summer, I wasn't aware that DTS HD-MA was not supported. I'm not sure I even knew it existed since I don't believe there were any HD DVD titles that used it. However, I did upgrade my AVR this past Christmas to a unit that can decode all codecs if they can at least be bitstreamed.

The format war is over as far as I'm concerned. Please read my posts with the expectation that I am trying to present a balanced view of options as I see them. Every mention of Apple TV or DTS HD audio on the PS3 is not intended to be a shot taken at Blu-ray. It is the format of the immediate future, and once there's a player that meets my needs, I'll be right there enjoying Blu-ray releases.

I'm waiting for a non-PS3, sub-$200 Profile 2.0 player, which I'm hoping might turn up in time for Black Friday or other holiday sales. Hopefully, they'll also start cranking out a lot more titles by then.

What will get me in?

Sub $200 player

and

Cross compatibility with my standard def players.

I simply am not going to spend even $300 on a player. I will not buy dvd's that can not play on the kid's player, in the car, on the portable player, or in the bedroom. At least half of my dvd purchases are family related, and backward compatibility is a must.

I was waiting for a couple of things. My HDTV from 2001 had component in Only at 1080i, so that meant HDM had less of an interest for me. Since I could not get the full enjoyment out, I figured to just wait this one out a little while and was hoping to have a clear winner or indication that both would be viable.

So, my wife finally convinced me to upgrade to a new 58 Inch plasma in January and days after we placed the order, the cards really started falling for HD DVD. We got the set a couple of weeks ago and I am now looking to buy a Blu-Ray.

Now, teh only thing holding me back is Profile 2.0. As soon as the Panasonic BD50 pricing is announced, I will either decide to wait on it or just buy a PS3. I waited this long, so no sense in not waiting another couple of months to avoid getting a player that does not at least use all teh possible features.

I just finished reading an excellent book on the adoption of new technologies into markets. The author argues that people do an evaluation of a technology before buying it. This evaluation plots their degree of "crisis," against the "total pain of adoption." If the crisis wins out, they adopt, if the pain is too high, they don't. The author mentions HD DVD and BD. The degree of crisis is low, but the total pain of adoption (he argues that price is less than 10% of the total pain of adoption) is _very_ low (easy to use, no reeducation needed--just pure advantage for flat panel owners). He believes the rise in flat panel sales will drive the HD media market and that it will be very successful (he did not, of course, know about the outcome of the format war).

If he's right about the role of price (and he's basing the claim on quantitative data), I think the future is bright for HD media, irrespective of the challenges (i.e., the TPPA of the alternatives is higher).

Im still buying the 360 HD expansion cause literally theres close to 500 HD-DVD's that were produced and it only costs 120.00 and if thats not a bargain I dont know what is. My 360 has the HDMI out also so Im almost caught up. My sad part is Band of Brothers only had a japan release and its 40 dollars a volume so 200.00 isnt my idea of affordable now. I have close to 10 discs I want so Im happy and reduced prices will help even more. Im still on the fence on BR though cause a decent player is still 400.00 which will interfere with vacation in april.

The fire sales are getting very attractive right now! My local BB and WalMart haven't cut prices on discs yet. BTW, I noticed that "Wired" has an online article on how to rip HD DVD content to BD :)
