View Full Version : Samsung 50" plasma vs Samsung 46" LCD
Right now, Amazon has their 50" 1080p plasma at $1900 while the 4665 at $1700 (and the 71 at $2200)
Just wanna know you guys opinion on which one is better for what I plan to do with it, which is play PS3 games, watch bluerays, sometimes DVDs, and sports?
Thanks. Other suggestions for other models or higher model is fine too

I went through the same exact thing 3 weeks ago... After looking at the 4071 and 4665 I decided on the Plasma.. I play alot of PS3 and watch blu rays myself. Ofcourse the number 1 concern is the burn in and image retention of the plasma when playing games and stuff...
But I advise go into a Best Buy or circuitcity and look at the them for yourself...
I didn't like the LCD's because the motion blur stuff and triple ball effect on a football after it is thrown... It looks like there are 3 footballs in the air...
When I looked the the 5084 in the store it didn't look good at all next to the LCD.. I fooled around with the settings a bit and got it to look a bit better...
When I decided on it and braught it home... It looked 10x better. Best Buy and Circuitcity are just to bright, and you can't get an accurate evaluation on a TV since your house isn't that bright...
I am happy with the Plasma which has GREAT PQ... For games and blu rays... COD 4 looks nuts.. I am in the process of rewatching my blu rays on my new TV.
So go into a store and check them out... See it for yourself. That is what I did.
well, I just got back from CC, and I say, the AMP is friging amazing! Watching the 4671 and the 4665 side by side, I could tell which one looks better.
Now, my question is, does the 5084 need amp? I saw that its PQ was less clear than the 4671.
For the 4671, the blueray movie, the people in it looked as if it was real life with AMP on, but for the 5084, it just looked like a standard hi-def movie.
Now, what I'm curious about is, does the 5084 need AMP? Or can you get the plasma to produce life-like pics by adjusting the settings?
Thanks guys

LCD's need amp because they can't refresh as fast as plasma.. I don't mean refresh rates... more like how fast they can produce an image...
Plasma is faster so it doesn't need motion effects to improve motion...
Like I said the 5084 looked terrible in the store when I saw it too... After taking it home it look 10x better in my house than the store...
HD channels are crisp and have great PQ.... Blue Rays look awesome on this TV..
On the LCD blu rays also looked great.. but I didn't like the AMP mode... to me the motion of the people seemed wierd...
So basically if you like the LCD better then get it... I don't see how you can go wrong since both are very good TV sets...

Those "life-like" pics you are seeing are not because the of 120hz, but because the 4671 is creating new frames between each movie frame. AMP removes judder but makes movies look like video. Movies do not look that way in the theater. AMP does look cool at first but I would rather watch my movies as movies. As far as I know no plasma does it, and does not need it for motion blur, but Pioneers do have 3-3 pulldown to remove judder.
