View Full Version : New to HDDVD - Unbelievable!!!
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 07:48 AM I just made the leap to HDDVD and I am absolutely blown away!
The picture quality on my new Sony HDTV is perfect
I showed my friends and family who had been sitting on the fence because of the format war my setup, and some of them went to purchase a player that night after I told them the difference in prices and current deals!
There is no way this will be a dead format
I share your joy.
Which films did you show them? Because if one of them was not Transformers, then you're in for even more "wow" factor. This should be near to the top of your shopping list. I would also recommend getting Zodiac, Stardust and The Bourne films.
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 08:18 AM Full Metal Jacket, 300 and Traffic. It was like looking through a window. The sound was pretty incredible too.
MovieSwede 01-31-08, 08:20 AM Test Hot fuzz instead.
(Traffic isnt directly reference material...)
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 08:23 AM What's wrong with Traffic?
I wouldn't try Stardust either. I'm sure it was the director's intent to be soft, but that's what it is. Very, very soft. I personally was let down by the movie as well. Heard good things but I thought it sucked.
Zodiac is probably the best HD DVD I've seen. Blows away Transformers PQ wise. Seabiscuit is another with great PQ. It's a great movie as well.
Get a Blu-ray player as well. You won't be disappointed.
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 08:36 AM Why would I need to get a Blu ray player too?
How could the picture quality be any better?
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 08:38 AM I would like to get Transformers. Does this have the soundtrack with "You've Got the Touch"? That always gets me fired up.
jason10mm 01-31-08, 08:38 AM Picture quality won't be any better, but there are a LOT of movies that are only out on Blu-ray.

Try Batman Begins.
MovieSwede 01-31-08, 08:39 AM What's wrong with Traffic?
Its basicly SD quality. Sure it benefits from HDs colorsampling compression etc.
But test
Hot fuzz and Riddick and you see what I mean.
Cnd Joe 01-31-08, 08:40 AM Stardust is great on a Sony, I gave my brother an A3 for Xmas. Also good is Serenity, Pan's labryinth.
MovieSwede 01-31-08, 08:42 AM Try Batman Begins.
Yes Batman begins ist a must buy as long as you can buy it. :)
cdhender 01-31-08, 08:42 AM Zodiac, Hot Fuzz, Transformers....the three best looking HD-DVDs in my opinion. Oh, Riddick and King Kong look pretty darn good as well.
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 08:43 AM What about some of the animated titles like Shrek or some of the Pixar movies? I bet these would look incredible.
MovieSwede 01-31-08, 09:09 AM Animated looks good, but thats just cheating ;)
Eric D. 01-31-08, 09:14 AM What about some of the animated titles like Shrek or some of the Pixar movies? I bet these would look incredible.
Pixar is Blu-ray only.
00 agent 01-31-08, 09:16 AM Why would I need to get a Blu ray player too?

Nothing is really better about it, it just has a lot of movies that are exclusives on it, just like HD DVD has a lot of exclusives of its own. If you don't have the coin, or just don't want Blu-ray, you can always buy the regular DVDs and just let your player upconvert them.
I think the OP was impressed by the value of HDDVD as that is one of the things he said convinced his friends to go buy that night. At 2 to 3 times the price blu does not comptete for hardware value.
TokyoShoe 01-31-08, 09:48 AM The picture quality on my new Sony HDTV is perfect
Just out of sheer curiousity, what Sony TV did you get ? (Model / Size / LCD or Plasma, etc?)
HD-FANATIC 01-31-08, 10:13 AM Welcome, and I like your screen name!!!!!!! I am pleased that another consumer has found the joy in HD DVD over Blu-ray. From what it sounds like the pricing was attractive and the viewing experience is a WOW factor. Like many of the members before me they have given you a great list of HD DVD movies to watch. I have to say that many of the titles are of great PQ .
1) Transformer
2) Shooter
3) Hot Fuzz
4) Blade Runner (older title, impeccable transfer)
5)The thing (older title, great transfer)
6) King Kong
7) Bourne triology
8) ........the list goes on!!!!
I am glad you choose this format over the other one. Really we need more conscious consumers spending their hard earn money on a great platform that will benefit the masses. Glad to see , you were able to see past the other formats blinding arguments and inherent faults.

Which HD DVD player did you buy????
wokisan 01-31-08, 10:20 AM What about some of the animated titles like Shrek or some of the Pixar movies? I bet these would look incredible.
As far as I know only Shrek 3 is available on HD-DVD.

You will continue to be blown away with the majority of movies that are available on HD DVD. Make sure you watch at least some of 300 with the Blue Screen PIP turned on!
eapleitez 01-31-08, 10:52 AM Nice to see new folks choosing HD DVD over blu-ray. But Traffic seriously needs a reissue and replacement program. Stardust and Zodiac look amazing and are fantastic films.
doublejack 01-31-08, 10:54 AM As far as I know only Shrek 3 is available on HD-DVD.
Ant Bully is another available on HD-DVD.
joemama127 01-31-08, 10:58 AM I recently bought an HD-A30 after watching various Blu-ray movies for the past 5 months and I must say that the HD-DVD's that I've watched so far (Serenity, Transformers, Disturbia) all look just as good or better than what I've seen with blu. The upconversion of regular dvd's also seems to be a bit better than my PS3, so even if the format actually tanks someday I'll probably keep the Toshiba for that reason alone. I used to not really care one way or the other but now I'm unsure if the right format is in the lead..
xolan99 01-31-08, 10:59 AM Why would I need to get a Blu ray player too?
How could the picture quality be any better?
Out of Sight and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas look good too.
Getting a Blu-ray player wouldn't be about better picture quality, it'd be about getting more films.
As of now, come June 2008 you would only have Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal releasing major films on HDDVD where as WB/New Line/HBO, Disney, Fox, Lionsgate, Sony release in Blu-ray - which is roughly 75% of all theatrical films to be released in 2008

Welcome to AVS. This thread is a good place to start for eye/ear candy.

jp_tech 01-31-08, 11:00 AM Ant Bully is another available on HD-DVD.
I think he just meant that Shrek 3 is HD-DVD and Pixar movies are not. There are more than just Shrek and Ant Bully animated movies available in HD-DVD. Happy Feet and TMNT are 2 others.
To the OP, some of my favs are Hot Fuzz, Transformers, Shrek 3 and Troy Dir Cut.
underdog57 01-31-08, 11:07 AM Now this post makes a lot of sense to me too ...
Hope more jump in to the "MERITS" Of hd-dvd ...
Enjoy your movies , hope the studios jump aboard , hope they will have too !!
Anything I throw in my A1 has looked very good .
Transformers , Riddick , Mutiny on the Bounty , Enter the dragon , Unforgiven , Kong ,
Hot Fuzz , Departed , forbidden planet . Lots of really good stuff .Fast and the furious .
Etc.........
Naw , this is far from over !!!!!!!!Funny how , blu breaks out the champagne declaring they won several times . If they say it enough someone might believe them ...
Bob
Corpse Bride, Polar Express.
So many movies to buy... I think anyone who owns HD DVD's should really purchase the top tier movies, which are obviously eye candy movies!
shawnmos 01-31-08, 11:32 AM Check out Serenity and 2001.
Splicer010 01-31-08, 11:44 AM HD DVD software needs to come down in price. The hardware has...now the disc's have to follow suit...Right now the same movie on both formats costs more on HD DVD by $5...HD DVD needs to be a minimum of $5 LESS than any blu-ray movie...That can deliver the knock-out punch...What would you buy??? A player that is inexpensive with expensive media or an expensive player with inexpensive media??? Over the long run the inexpensive media will win out because it will quickly make up the cost of the more expensive player...But if there are both inexpensive player & inexpensive media then the choice is clear (pun intended)...
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 12:14 PM As far as my equipment, I got a new Sony Triniton Wega X32BR250
This is the widescreen version.
I tried a few other movies on my player, and they all look awesome.
Movies tried so far:
FMJ
300
Traffic (not sure why this gets bad reviews)
Enter the Dragon
I also got a copy of Finding Nemo from my neighbor, and to my surprise it played just fine! I thought from the last post that Pixar movies wouldn't work.
The picture quality was just as impressive in HD.
1MaNArmY 01-31-08, 12:16 PM Welcome to the HD-DVD consumer friendly format.
Batman Begins, V for Vendetta, Training Day are all great transfers with good audio.

Hold on a minute. I don't even think that is an HDTV, is it? Also, you must be referring to the SD version of Finding Nemo. Pixar is BR and I don't even think Nemo was released yet in BR either.

ya I dont think sony made a trinitron direct view model that was HD.
It is 16:9 but not HD....
Imagine if he upgraded to a 65" HD set? He would even be floored.
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 12:44 PM I'm pretty sure it is HD. It is widescreen 16:9.
It even has the connections in the back for upconverting to HD DVD.
It looks WAY better than my old set.

I'm starting to think that this guy might not know what he is talking about. Now I'm not even sure if he has an actual HD-DVD player, maybe just an upconvert. If he does, he is not watching HD using that TV.
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 12:47 PM I'm pretty sure that they don't make a 65" Sony like mine.

I have some bad news for you. Your TV is not an HDTV. Just because it is widescreen does not mean it is an HDTV.
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 12:50 PM But aren't HD movies in widescreen?
jp_tech 01-31-08, 12:55 PM But aren't HD movies in widescreen?
You need to take some time and read through this forum. You're facts are waaaayyyyy off. Yes, almost all high-def movies are in widescreen format but that does not mean owning a 16:9 TV means it is high-def. It is mainly about the resolution. Do you even really have an HD-DVD player? What model is it?
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 12:56 PM I got a Toshiba at Best Buy. This is the one that plays HD.
James R. Geib 01-31-08, 12:58 PM Most HD movies are widescreen, but widescreen does not mean HD. High definition is defined by horizontal resolution, and your TV does not have enough horizontal lines to be classified high definition by any standard.
I would like to get Transformers. Does this have the soundtrack with "You've Got the Touch"? That always gets me fired up.
No, this is the new Michael Bay version not the cartoon. I love the original cartoon movie as well. "Till all are one"
James R. Geib 01-31-08, 12:59 PM How is your Toshiba HD-DVD player connected to your television, and are you just messing with us?
Brajesh 01-31-08, 01:01 PM If HDDVDRocks is impressed now, he's in for quite a treat with an actual HD display.

HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 01:06 PM I'm sorry you think I am trying to waste time. I came here to express my excitement and most of you have been very helpful.
I'm sorry if I'm not as knowledgeable as the veterans on the site, but I guess everyone has to start somewhere.
I have the player hooked up with the cables it came with.
iontyre 01-31-08, 01:09 PM Wow, and we wonder why HDM hasn't caught on with the mass market. I'm planning to hold a seminar here at the community college I work at on setting up and using a HDTV. Guess I better be prepared for some really off-base perceptions!!!
alpha21 01-31-08, 01:10 PM by page 4, this will be a historic thread!!!!!
James R. Geib 01-31-08, 01:13 PM HDDVDROCKS,
You have a nice television, and a great high definition movie player with the Toshiba. It really does get much better when it's connected to a high definition television.
What DVD player did you have before the Toshiba, and what was that old player connected to as far as the television.
Most of the great picture you are seeing is the result of the nice Sony television you now have, and not the fact that you are playing high definition movies from the Toshiba. In fact, what you are seeing from the Toshiba is no different than what a regular DVD would provide you.
To the OP does it have the HDDVD logo in front of the player or just plain HDMI. Because if it just says HDMI that is an upconvert and has good quality for SD DVD's
iontyre 01-31-08, 01:16 PM I'm sorry you think I am trying to waste time. I came here to express my excitement and most of you have been very helpful.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but you are not seeing hi-definition televison. Your set can at most display 480 lines of horizontal resolution. This is the standard definition specification. HDTV's display content at 720 or 1080 lines of resolution. The difference is HUGE!
What cables it came with? The player? They are probably composite cables, one video and two audio. These are standard definition cables. To use high definition, you need either component (three video cables, red, green, and blue) or a single HDMI cable. Sound would either be a seperate stereo pair of cables, 6 cables for analog multichannel audio, a single coax cable for coax digital surround audio, a fiber optic spdif cable again for digital surround, or the sound can be transmitted across the hdmi cable if you are using that for video.
HD DVD players do have connectors for standard definition tv's (we all wonder why, it just adds to the confusion) and that appears to be what you are doing. Picture quality will be good, at the limit of what you can get from standard definition, but it will not be high-definition.
Sorry.
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 01:18 PM So I'll need to get a Monster cable HDMI for best results?
I know jumping down his throat for not knowing his TV isnt HD is our first reaction, but maybe his older player didnt upconvert or wasnt progressive, but seeing how his newer hd-dvd model, whatever model it is, plays HD-DVD's better to him than his old player, more power to him. Im glad you like your new player, you may consider buying an HD TV that can take full advantage of the player's offerings.
K
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 01:22 PM I guess I'll have to invest a little more and get the Monster HDMI cable. I just ordered one on Amazon for about $200, since I want to get the absolute best picture quality like it says.

Sorry to report but I dont think that TV has an HDMI cable in order to have that you need to have an HDTV
I agree. I think this guy is just trying to waste everyones time.
Nooo, don't say that. He's not wasting our time, he's just not up on HDTV standards as most of us here are.
HDDVDRocks, although your new Sony will provide you with a wonderful picture, the truth of the matter is it's not an HD set. About a month ago I purchased the Sony KDS-55A3000 rear projection TV, which provides 1080P (Full HD) resolution. That is an example of an HDTV.
I also have a Toshiba HD DVD player, the HD A3, and the movies you are referencing look absolutely amazing on my TV. So if you want to get true HD, then you'll need to upgrade your TV. Otherwise, even in spite of your HD DVD player, you are not getting true HD resolution on your current TV. You don't know what "looking through a window" is like until you experience true HD.
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 01:33 PM To the OP where did you buy this TV and was it open boxed?
I bought it from a neighbor who has always been an "early adopter". He has been in the HD game since 2001, but he decided recently to upgrade to a larger set and wanted to give me a special deal.
jp_tech 01-31-08, 01:34 PM I guess I'll have to invest a little more and get the Monster HDMI cable. I just ordered one on Amazon for about $200, since I want to get the absolute best picture quality like it says.
I don't think your TV even has an HDMI input.
Morpheo 01-31-08, 01:34 PM I got a Toshiba at Best Buy. This is the one that plays HD.

I am still surprised that they still sell CRTV? I thought the only TV's in the market right now were Plasmas, LCD, and RPTV

iontyre 01-31-08, 01:34 PM So I'll need to get a Monster cable HDMI for best results?
Yikes!!! No, no no!!! You do not need to be ripped off by Monster cable. First off, you actually need a real HDTV. Yours is only a widescreen standard definition set. Then you can get the hdmi cable, but you still should probably avoid the vastly overpriced Monster cables. A place like Monoprice can get you a great cable for 1/10th the price!!!
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 01:35 PM Sorry to report but I dont think that TV has an HDMI cable in order to have that you need to have an HDTV
Is there a converter for HDMI to make it compatible with my set? I just want to preserve the picture quality without degradation.
I bought it from a neighbor who has always been an "early adopter". He has been in the HD game since 2001, but he decided recently to upgrade to a larger set and wanted to give me a special deal.
Not to be nosey or anything but how much did you pay for the TV?
Scribblez 01-31-08, 01:36 PM HDDVDRocks, you seem too be very misinformed about technology, but I guess everybody has to start somewhere.
As people have already stated, you are not getting an HD picture on that TV. First off, it has to do with your TV, which is not an HDTV. Secondly, we don't even know if you actually have an HD-DVD player or just a regular upconverting DVD player. Seriously go check your player to see if there is an "HD-DVD" logo on the front. Or get the box you purchased and give us the model number.
I also got a copy of Finding Nemo from my neighbor, and to my surprise it played just fine! I thought from the last post that Pixar movies wouldn't work. The picture quality was just as impressive in HD.
Here's another problem. Finding Nemo is not out in any HD format and is also Blu-ray exclusive... So you are just playing a regular DVD which would work on any player, HD-DVD or Blu-ray. Now we don't know if the rest of the movies you are playing are actually HD-DVD or just regular DVD upconverted.
Here, you say you watched the movie 300 on HD-DVD. Did the case look like:
1)
http://reviews.avsforum.com/data/3/300.jpg
Notice the red? and the HD-DVD logo at the top? Now this is HD-DVD
or
2) Just a regular DVD case you see everyday.
Now wait until you actually see a TRUE HD display, you will really be blown away. What you are seeing now is not even close to HD quality.
Forgive me, but I had to laugh while reading this thread....just goes to show how informed the average J6P is
alpha21 01-31-08, 01:37 PM Is there a converter for HDMI to make it compatible with my set? I just want to preserve the picture quality without degradation.

No, you NEED an HDTV. Yours is not an HDTV. It is a widescreen standard definition set. I hope this neighbor did not tell you it was an HDTV, cause if he did he either knowingly lied or doesn't know what he is talking about.
Is there a converter for HDMI to make it compatible with my set? I just want to preserve the picture quality without degradation.
For a SDTV there is nothing that will preserve the pq the highest quality you get is 480p and that is if you have component cables which I am assuming it has.
alpha21 01-31-08, 01:39 PM $1800, but he gave me the stand for free. I think he paid over $6000 for it initially.

In the event you are serious and not just a troll who thinks he and his buddies at BR.com are funny, you have a TV. Yes, a normal everyday run-of-the-mill low-quality TV. Your neighbor ripped you off if he told you it's an HDTV.
You need an HDTV. Until you get that there is NO reason to have an HD DVD player, if that's even what you have since for some strange reason you won't say what model it is.
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 01:40 PM LOL :D This can't be serious. Come on guy....
I remember seeing sets much more expensive years ago, but this seemed about right with depreciation. Did I get ripped off?

I wholeheartedly agree!!! If you really purchased a $200 HDMI cable, cancel your order!
An HDMI cable won't work anyway...your TV won't have an HDMI connector (unless you misled us on the TV model number). Speaking of misled, it seems that's what your neighbor did when he gave you a "special price" on an "HDTV".
I guess I'll have to invest a little more and get the Monster HDMI cable. I just ordered one on Amazon for about $200, since I want to get the absolute best picture quality like it says.

HDDVDRocks, if your story is true, then I'm sorry to say that not only did your neighbor mislead you into thinking you're buying an HDTV, but he grossly ripped you off! My brand new 55" HDTV cost $150 less.
iontyre 01-31-08, 01:48 PM Would a PS3 work on my now obsolete set? Not too excited about shelling out more money at this point.
Please, please, please tell us you did not let someone sucker you into paying $1800 for a standard definition crt television? Please...
If true, someone needs to find this guy and...god, I don't know, kick his butt all the way to Baghdad!
HDDVDRocks 01-31-08, 01:49 PM Nothing like a little insult to injury...
So how much TV could I have purchased for $1800?????

No, a PS3 will do you no good. What you need is a real HDTV in order to enjoy HD movies.

iontyre 01-31-08, 01:49 PM YEAH a PS3 was made for your TV, and since you have Sony TV the quality will be even better. I am jealous I wish I had met your neighbor first so I can buy that TV with a free stand for such a great price. I am stupid to pay 200 dollars more and get stuck with a plain old 1080p DLP set. I could have saved that 200 dollars and bought a Monster HDMI cable for the PS3
Please hold the sarcasm till we really know what is going on...

I thought it looked awesome.

Top of the line 50" 720p plasma for sure, decent quality 47" 1080p lcd as well. This is truly epic in its tragedy...

That post is very informative you can also find this in HDTV for Dummies. This is for the OP BUY THAT BOOK
rboster 01-31-08, 01:52 PM SInce this thread has ventured off into another area/forum, I'm going to close this thread and ask the OP to start a separate thread in the appropriate HDTV forum (if he so chooses).
HDDVDrocks, sorry to hear about your purchase, but at this point I think the thread has run it's course. You come to the right place to do research for future purchases. Always best to research first and AvS is a great place for that...
