I subscribe to the DIRECTV HD package. No complaints about the picture
quality. Here is my issue. Read carefully as I attempt to describe the
situation.
As you know, HD programs are almost always transmitted in 16x9 format, while
SD programs are almost always transmitted in 4x3 format. If say for
example, I am watching a SD channel, then direct tune to a HD channel, the
picture format on my TV switches automatically as it should, no problem.
However, if I activate the channel guide and do the same thing, the format
does not switch, so the picture's aspect ratio is now wrong with the new
channel, in this case 4x3 for an HD channel. If I channel up or down (using
the channel+ or channel- on the remote), then back to my where I was, it
will switch to the correct format, 16x9. Likewise, this problem occurs if
watching an HD channel, then I switch to an SD channel via the channnel
guide. The picture for the SD channel will be 16x9. Again, I can fix it if
I channel up or down, then back. Having to do this every time when
switching from HD to SD, or SD to HD is royal pain in the backside.
This problem occurs with both of my HD TVs, and with both of my DIRECTV
receivers, so I don't think it's an equipment problem. I have called
DIRECTV tech support and after a painfully long conversation with them, they
concluded it must be a software problem in their system, and that they would
initiate a problem ticket. That was over a month ago I first reported the
problem. Again, I only see this problem when I switch channels via the
program guide. As of now, nothing has been done to correct my problem, we've
just been living with it.
I was wondering if anyone else out there has experienced this same thing.
