I just got a 1080p scaler. It has 1 hdmi output and 2 inputs. I am wondering how I connect it. I have a onkyo 805, ps3, explorer 8300 hd, and a 73" 1080i dlp. What I want to know is what gets hooked where? Does the tv go to the output on the scaler and the ps3 and the explorer 8300 go to the 2 inputs on the scaler? Then what about the receiver? How do I still get audio for the ps3 and explorer cable box 8300 hd to the receiver? Do I just run an optical cable from the ps3 and explorer to the receiver? There are optical connections on scaler as well.
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

All my devices are going directly into the video processor since I like the auto switching function, then to the receiver. The only reason why I would think someone would send their signals to the receiver first is if the receiver is HMDI 1.3 and the video processor can't pass the bitstream. This is not an issue for me or most people though since my HD-DVD player and PS3 do internal audio decoding just fine.

Thanks for your reply, So I should run the ps3 and cable box to the scaler inputs, then run the scaler output to the receiver input, then run the receiver output to the TV? Will I be able to get 1080P on my TV using the scaler even though my TV is 1080I.

Rainman,
I would bypass the receiver's video processing altogether with an outboard video processor. BTW, which one did you buy?
Which tv do you own? When you say 1080i, do you mean that is the highest resolution signal it will accept? If so, it will not be able to use a 1080p signal. I am not familiar with rear projectors; is the actual display 1080i or 1080p?

James the scaler is the Gefen HD scaler reatail $449, I got it off the classifieds for $199 with free shipping. I don't have alot of money to spend big at the moment. I have the scaler output running to the receiver and the cable box and ps3 running to the receiver inputs and the recevier out running to the tv hdmi2. My tv can get 1080 p from hdmi 2 but it's a pc connection so the picture is not that great the SD are grainy and the color is not so good. The tv is a mitsubishi dlp 73927. The ps3 picture looks great it's just the cable signal. Do you have any thoughts or more questions.

You're always going to get a worse picture with SD sources, no point expecting it to be even comparable to the PS3. Processors just do a better job of upscaling than most TVs, they can't perform miracles :)
