The room is my living room and lighting is controlled have some slight ambient lighting from outside but can be corrected more.

I currently have HD DVD player

Needs lots more information. First off, have you seen any projectors yet? There are many types available to choose from.

As a general note, the Epson Pro1080UB is one of the better units available in the under $4k range. Feel free to expand on your preferences, needs, wants, etc... such that we can help guide you...

I have researched a lot of projectors, have seen the epson pro ub and can get it here in oklahoma for around 3600 with lamp and mount , I have seen the panasonic ae 2000 also, I have read up on all sorts or projectors and as soon as I start thinking hard about making my purchase, I read something about another one , Sony VPL VW60, and now I am second guesing my self. I want one where I wont see the convergence, that has dark blacks, this will be basically the television inside the living room. I watch a lot of regular dvds and a lot of sports most movies are in 16:9 format and that is the screen type mine is and would like to have 1080 p res. I do want to use hdmi also . My projector will be ceiling mounted and viewing distance is between approx 12-17 feet

I am by no means a professional or even come close to thinking I would understand the specifics when it comes to a projector. I want to have a projector that is clear where I would not notice any problems with the way the image shows up. I hope this was able to give you a little more info Mr Turk, I know you are very good at what you do and would really value your opinion as to which projector I should purchase.

All are great options. Generally I find the Sony to be a small step above, but for more money as well. The lens on the Sony is better than the Epson (I cannot accurately compare to the Panny), and the Sony has some convergence adjustment. The Epson's I have found are hit or miss with convergence. Of the units I have tested, they are usually near perfect, or way off. If you decide on the Epson, make sure your dealer checks it out first to make sure it doesn't have a convergence issue (especially since you are more sensitive to it).

IF you were in my shoes , I need one that will brighten a room that has some outside light leakage inside but that can be fixed. knowing all that you know about projectors and where I do not have a dedicated room, with a 3500 budjet what projector of the projectors out would you pick.

Boy...if it were me, I'd take the Sony to be honest. One of the advantages of it is you can literally max out the contrast, bringing up the white level, without blooming. Plus even in high lamp it is nice and quiet. Even not doing that, it has more light output (after calibration) than the Epson.

SONY!!! Good Call Jason.

Best Pic for your money.

Thanks! It is a tough call....both are really good. I will admit that I am more a fan of the SXRD/LCOS/DILA technology than LCD, so I probably have some bias.

Jason, is that true? The Sony is that much better than the Epson? I am between the two and can't seem to decide. Just starting construction now, so I am in no hurry, although, I would like to purchase soon.

Well as I said, both are good. I'd be willing to bet most would indeed prefer the Sony (taking price consideration out of it). NOTE: This is the VW60...not 40 (I only say this because I know you had a thread asking about the 40--my VW40 is enroute but I haven't gotten it to test yet).

I know you were talking about the 60. I was just curious about the 40. I am willing to spend a little bit extra if the image is better. I would like this projector to last me a little while. I will be using it in a basement ht, totally light controlled, I think a 96" carada, either classic cinema (1.0 gain) or the bw (1.4), not sure yet. Seating will be about 11 feet back and 17-18 feet for the second row.

Yeah if you want to maximize time with it before upgrade...go with the VW60.

Ideally, I would like to maximize my time with it. But like most people around here, I'm sure I would want to upgrade sooner than later.

This would fend off the urge for a decent amount of time. :)

Thanks Jason. I, and many people here really value your opinion. This is going to be my first projector purchase, I hope to get it right and be satisfied. For a little while at least.

Best thing to do is buy from a place with a good return policy...that way you have piece of mind should it end up not being what you expected.

The ONLY place I am going to buy my projector from is......AVS.

I have been back and forth on the Sony 60, the Epson pro 1080ub and the Panny 2000. It seems like the Sony is the best bet, but the knives, and now a leather boot too, how can anyone pass this up?

Ok, so back to the topic here. I guess the Sony is the best bet in this price range. It's a little bit of a stressful decision especially since it will be my first projector. I am definately looking for the best image, in this price range.

Yes we do. We are not a .com store. We are a CI, who happens to own the AVSForum. Anyways, feel free to PM me for details.

At some point you just have to trust your gut and pull the trigger. There will always be the chance you don't like it for one reason or another, but you won't know until you get it.

My guess is that regardless of which you choose, you'll love it. All the ones you both are thinking of are top notch.

Isn't the Sony $1,000 more expensive than the 1080UB?

Me too. I have been back and forth so much in last few weeks. I seem to change my mind almost every day. Part of me wants to just buy the Sony now and end all of my indecision. I think I will go nuts if I wait until my theater is done. Just starting now and have no idea how long it will take. I'm sure I will need some type of professional help when it's all done.

I agree totally with you, and to top it off my work is stressful, (cop) I had no idea I would have this much of a dilema with picking a projector what ones have you been thinkn about other than the epson and the sony that I brought up

optoma hd 80 or 81
panasonic ae2000
epson ub 1080 pro
and now this sony

mmarki

The Epson, Panny, Optoma, Mits, and Sony. The RS1 too, a little out of my price range though. The Sony and the Epson seem to be my final two (at least for now), but had the Panny in there for a while too. The panny is a little less expensive and I wouldn't feel too bad when I want to upgrade in 6 months. :)

Well this is what I would suggest since you are a cop:
I'll send you all 4 projectors. You can stick them at the end of the shooting range. Now, while blindfolded, unload a clip in their general direction. Whichever one survives, that is your new unit! :)
