View Full Version : Pioneer PDP-5080HD or Sony KDL-52XBR2
Im torn on witch one to get. They both look nice, but I can get the Kuro for 1000 dollars less. I have a ps3 and hd dvd player, so I like the sony because it can do 1080p while the kuro is just 720p. And about 10% of the time the tv will be used for games on the ps3. And I am not worried about glare, or anything like that in the room. So the question is which one do you think I will be more happy with in the long run? Or what about the XBR4?
THanks
kdmtuscani 02-06-08, 12:14 AM I just picked up a 40" XBR2 and have been contemplating a 4280. I have my TV connected to an XA2, PS3, 360 and an HD Sat Box and to be honest am extremely disappoint with the Sony. I have a great panel (no clouds) and still do not get a great and accurate picture. SD content is poor at best. The shadow detail on this set is almost absent in comparison to many of the most basic 720p TVs. I will be returning this set very soon and be picking up the 4280 at over 2x the cost. :D
Without a single doubt, get the Pioneer Kuro. Don't let the 1080p vs 720p debate fool you - the 5080 is the best 50" available today. The Kuro's ANSI contrast ratio is double that of the Sony XBR4 (3500:1 vs 1700:1 respectively). And with deep deep blacks, the Kuros are perfect for watching movies and playing video games (virtually no IR).
Sonys are excellent TVs, but Pioneers are the best - in a league of their own.

I like to think my PRO-1150HD is better (Elite version)
Dude, believe me, I've had them side by side in a dark, controlled environment and there is absolutely no comparison. The 5080 is the finest panel in existence today.

I am very partial to my 5080, but only you can really decide which is best. Since you said it'll be used for games 10% of the time, the majority of it's usage will be for movies and television, I'm assuming. The 5080 imo brings many television shows like Lost and movies to life. I've never seen another tv come close besides the other pioneers and several high end panasonics.
gerry_e 02-09-08, 09:50 PM hi, does the 5080 have a better black level than say,the samsung 5084 because the pioneer is a dimmer picture? I must agree the 5080 has an amazing picture but it seems to be dimmer or is it just the lights in the store?

Regarding your first question, I think when properly tested the 5080 does reproduce darker blacks, but I could be wrong. A quick forum search might produce the answer.
My display definitely is not dim when I am watching movies or television. I noticed the same thing you did in the store but at home the whites don't look grey or dingy, they look white, like true natural white, not blindingly non-natural white like many LCDs.
The Samsung 5084 is 1080p and that might be important for you, but it's not for me. In my opinion I couldn't have spent my money any more wisely.

Are you making this comment about the 5080 being better than the XBR or the 5080 better than the PRO-1150HD? If you are making it over the PRO-1150HD then you need to do some more research as to what the 1150 is. The 5080 is a great display but the 1150 allows for a better calibration then the 5080. The 5080 is the non-Elite Kuro and the 1150 is the Elite

I'm pretty sure he's comparing it to the xbr 2.
To the OP, get the 5080. It's the better tv all around. Hell the XBR2 is not even the latest XBR, we already have the XBR5 in stores now. The XBR2 is ancient. I personally think the 5080 is better than any XBR LCD.

Are you certain you compared the 5080 to a Samsung plasma? The plasmas look very similar to the LCDs and all plasmas look dim next to most LCDs. As far as black levels go the 5080 is much better than the Sammy plasma.
smokenz 02-10-08, 01:44 PM depends on the lighting conditions.
full day light the plasma will suffer from reflections and lower light because the way they absorb daylight into themselves.
in controlled lighting, the plasma blows away XBR without a doubt. My friend has an XBR5 and he loves it, after comparing it to my 720p Kuro he is contemplating selling his and getting a Kuro.
In the middle of the day the LCD will be more visible without a doubt, but you can always close curtains if its bad.
