View Full Version : Storage of DVD's for large collections
zigzag666 02-01-08, 08:22 AM My collection has grown to about 1500 DVD's. I was wondering what other collectors have found for "compact" storage of the cases. Has anyone found "pullout" type tall racks? Since I don't wish to devote 10 feet of wall space to dvd cases, I'm looking for other ideas....
Thanks to all
The most compact system is to backup your DVD collection to hard drives in a media server and place the originals in storage for safe keeping.
lockheede 02-01-08, 09:28 AM I am in the process of converting all of my DVD cases to the thinpak cases. I am slowly finding people who are doing covers in this size. This will take up approximately half of the space my movies currently reside in.

I use thin cases from rima.com and 6-disk cases from cyberguys.com. For non-essential material I use binder pages, also from rima.com, which take 4 discs on 2 sides = 8 per page. The pages stick out the ends of standard binders; I should look for binders with extra-wide covers.

For my standard-def DVDs, I ended up buying a couple of albums/books. Granted, I only had about 400 discs to store, but it's worked out well.
It's not quite as handy as cases, since you can't just scan titles/case spines. I ended up categorizing movies into a few genres (comedy, family, action, etc) and then alphabetizing by title. Kind of a pain, but makes it a little quicker when you want to go grab a specific movie.
johnny15 02-01-08, 10:21 AM What???? Why is this in the HDM section??? Maybe I'm just confused........
Binders work well as you can store sevral thousand in a small area.
But I like to keep everything in its orginal box. I don't know why as I've got all my CD's in binders with the cases pyled up on a shelf in a closet..
Anyway for all my movies I go 8 inch by 6ft shelves from menards and mounted them high up in my closet. Basicly above the clothing racks. I cut down some of the boards so the shelves were U shaped alowing for maximum space. But I am nearing the end. I got roughly 400 DVDs,90 HDMs. My laserdiscs are also keeped in the closet but are stored on 3, 3ft by 2 ft shelves as their just so big.
I also installed a few plug in lights so I can view the movies.
but what I may do when the space is gone. I may build some pull our shelves that can be mounted under the TV or in the closet.
My ultimate goal would be an entire room deticated to my collection hopefully big enough to to a gallery.
Mine are out of hand, and this thread made me think about it. I have a long hallway where I can put in narrow shelving.
+1 for binders
I put the discs in one sleeve and the labels from the original case in a sleeve next to the disc, so my lovely wife can read the synopsis of the movie to decide if we want to watch it that evening. All arranged alphabetically with Blu in one binder and HD DVD in another.
Timothy Ramzyk 02-01-08, 11:55 AM What I don't get is why someone hasn't made slimline cases that are a 1/8 inch deeper, so that you can slip standard keep-case art in them and fit a lot more disks on the shelf?

While I went the route of devoting an entire wall to four 3ft wide, 7ft custom bookcases - a friend with an equally large collection (and a wife that didn't like a wall of DVD/BD's) bought several large disc albums. We catalog our collections with Invelos' DVD Profile which has print layouts that can include front/back cover art, plot, cast/crew and whatever other info you want. He selected a layout specifically designed for albums that had several discs on a page. He then printed out color copies of each and slipped them into the binders corresponding with the discs.

Steve P. 02-01-08, 12:49 PM Discsox for me. A little expensive, but it works well. I haven't done this with HDM or special discs though, those are all still in the original cases.
Darknyt 02-02-08, 05:16 AM +1 for Binders and a catalog binder made with DVD Profiler.
I have about 4 or 5 of those 200+ DVD binders.
I keep a very handy full color (with cover art) alphabetized catalog binder to flip through for selections.
Just pick a movie from the alphabetized list, and go to the binder for its number which are all kept numerically (not alphabetically to avoid resorting).
Good amount of time invested in doing that - though well worth it once it's setup.
I purchased the Sony 400 disc DVD changer. Great solution with easy access to my 365 DVD collection.

Wow,1500 DVD's!
Just imagine if they were bulky VHS instead:eek:;)
I devoted about 7 feet of wall space to DVDs and got customized built-in shelves when I got the place remodeled. Thankfully, the HDM cases are half as thick as DVD cases, so that will create more space.

I have wondered the same thing.
See, we are more alike than you think.....:D

Have you considered Can-Am storage? Great company from Canada. Not sure what your budget is but these units will last a lifetime.

Nosferax 02-03-08, 11:08 AM You can use either slim cd cases or slim dvd cases. You can use DVDProfiler to print out label and insert for those cases.
dododge 02-03-08, 11:56 AM Discsox for me. A little expensive, but it works well.
Same here. Their DVD pro sleeves (http://www.mmdesign.com/products/dvd_pro_sleeve.htm) hold the discs, liners, etc in about 1/5 the space.

It doesn't take long to reach 1k...I've still got some room to grow. What's funny is I think I only bought less then 5 movies on VHS in my life...then DVD/BD came along. Been an addiction ever since.

Got some sox coming on Monday. Didn't want to invest in anymore "furniture" that would only be outgrown again. I also wanted the original art work intact.
I've used univenture sleeves for cds and they are fantastic.

ive also been converting my 700-800 dvds to slim cases (from tapes.com) and where possible, using ones that hold two discs (for extras that i never watch)(bought at a local dollar store:eek: who havent had any in stock for the last month, may have to order on-lone also).
im leaving 'all' 10 of my hd dvds in original cases.
ive got a 72" high, ten foot wall of almost full bookcases in hallway. it does impress visitors, tho.

zigzag666 02-04-08, 12:36 PM Thanks to all that have replied so far. I have basically done what a few have suggested. Have 8 of those 200 dvd albums with the discs stored in them alphabetically. Invelos DVD pro and mobile to keep track of what I have. Actual cases are boxed and in a closet.
I was hoping to find tall pull out drawers, maybe 5 feet high and 3 feet deep or so, that could be stacked side by side. This way I could store about 2000 disc cases in a pretty compact space in a closet. Looks like I may have to build these provided I can find track hardware that can accompdate the weight. (those empty cases do weigh quite a bit when you put a few hundred together.
If anyone knows of something along these lines, please let me know. If not maybe I can design one and put my sketchs on this site for others to copy, advise, improve.

I agree. The cabinets are pretty top notch but the price + shipping is killer. I'm not sure I would do it again.
2Channel 02-04-08, 11:11 PM If I owned that many DVD's I'd deffinitely look at a solution like this.
http://www.kaleidescape.com/products/
The Kaleidescape 3RU holds up to 1,340 DVDs. They can be clustered up to 15,000 DVDs. But it is an expensive solution, and if you like having the cases around you may want to look at a custom cabinet. You could try to find someone at your local lumber store who likes to build cabinets in their spare time and get them to make something in the dimensions you need. We had some built in cabinets made and I made the drawers myself to the dimensions I need to store plenty of DVDs and CDs.
