Itsdon 09-11-08, 03:46 PM Same here, ISO wireless is a problem but VOB wireless works just fine. DerekX 09-14-08, 01:13 AM Ok, Like many others recently, I bought it off Ebay from Klegg for about $50, labeled as BRAND NEW. Got it home, boots up, and menu shows, but can NOT connect to any network both wired and wireless, using DHCP. Wirelessly, I can scan for network, enter my wep key, and then sits there for 60 seconds trying to connect. Immediately aftewards, it just returns to menu, with NO connection. So I decided to go wired using static IP, and it works. I can stream all files and works great. However, the NAS feature doesn't work. Has anyone encountered this problem? I checked the firmware, and it is latest .160 blimey 09-14-08, 04:30 AM Sorry to hear that so many of you are having trouble. I use it as a DVD (folder) and xvid player only. I don't play slideshows or audio files, so I can't comment about those. I also use only the internal drive. I use 15 second skip and rewind/forward controls a lot, and I like instantaneous response - I don't want to wait for the streaming. NAS is only so fast, so I networked it via usb host. I have a wireless USB bridge device (belkin) connected to the klegg, so I'm able able to copy files to it as if it is locally connected via USB - all without moving the klegg device. It tolerates having the USB host cable connected all the time and only goes into USB host mode if it senses a connection. su_A_ve 09-15-08, 11:55 AM more updates... Borrowed a SATA drive. At first, I could not detect the drive when going via USB to my PC. Checked the connections and found the SATA connector on the board was so loose as soon as I touched it a bit, the casing came off the board leaving the pins coming from the MB. Worse, one of the pins was hanging by a thread. Carefully put the casing back and pushed it enough that it seemed to stay put. Connected the drive and it was recognized by the PC. The drive was then working and was able to transfer some test material. I played a dvix file for about half hour and samples DVDs, with no problems at all. Since I paid $25 for it, it would probably cost me half that to send it in for repair, so for now I might just leave it as is or drop a touch of solder on the pin. BTW, after copying samples (about 20 minutes or so) I opened the box, and the drive was hot but not actually cooler than when the drive was on the PC, so no complains here. My only problem was playback of material from the SATA drive. I created the corresponding folders (MOVIE, MUSIC, PHOTO) on the root of th drive and dropped in some content, some with sub folders. But when selecting the Movie icon and pressing PLAY, I would get a message something like no content found on Ext ODD. However, later figured that if I select OK, I would then need to select the Hard Drive icon, refresh, and finally HDD1 to get to the Movie content. Not intuitive at all and pointless... Also tested slideshows from pictures on the local drive. It's AWFUL. A black 2-3 second delay between each photo, with an hour glass icon. No transitions, no nothing... Granted, pics are high 3-6 Mega pixel. Besides movies, this was an option I thought about using this for - guess not. Now, if we can somehow able to load a custom display for the movies folder, using one of the generators done for the PH or Tvix would be great. I would imagine that you could play files burned to a dvd but I wanted to know if it would play a straight-up store bought DVD (like any one buys DVD's anymore!). It would eliminate my DVD player from my home entertainment set-up. Also could you play blue-ray DVD's on a Blue-ray USB Drive? Thanks, Tommy toomeypj 10-13-08, 10:14 AM I am using a USB DVD player plugged in to the MSM and it plays unencrypted DVDs and SVCDs fine. In other words, if you play ripped DVDs that you have burned, there is no problem. Store bought DVDs have encryption and you get an error that the file type is unsupported. I mainly use my MSM to play ripped DVDs loaded on my network server. It plays these and ripped ISOs just fine. It is also much better for photos than my previous media server, an MVIX760HD, because the picture is much sharper (MVIX760 is VHS quality for photos). You have to resize the photos to around 250MB each so that the hour glass doesn't sit there too long between pictures. I also use it for HDTV over my wired network and it works great. Sorry for rambling, but I think the MSM is really under appreciated for all that it does. su_A_ve 11-03-08, 04:36 PM hmm... Not having enough ports, I was using the DVI connector out to the VGA input on my TV. Default rez is ???? x 766. Standard DVDs look great, however noticed issues with non-dvd files. It seems the MSM does not upscale/downscale ? Will have to rewire around and go back to component or DVI->HDMI... dangerdoc1 11-04-08, 08:35 AM hmm... I'm not sure I understand the problem. monsalbus 11-05-08, 11:46 PM Over the past 8 months i have bought at least a dozen of these units. along with mostly WD drives. I have paid 149-99$USD. Too bad I did not see the auction as I would have bought a lot more. -some have better (quieter) fans than others (about 1 in 5 have a good fan). And yes, btwn the hard disk and fan -you know it is running. -never had to return a unit -wd green drives work great (run very cool) and have no overheating problems -after purchasing a 5 series Samsung 40" LCD figured out that even though dvi output works ok, it is MHO that component has a nicer/softer picture. -have purchased a popcorn hour and basically cannot stand it. (no power off, lame pata drive, no usb host) only saving grace is h264 -approx. 1.5-3gig xvid rips are the sweet spot (depending on the content of the movie) -wireless is basically useless -ndas does work fine under windows. even though i use a mac for everything else (have not tested mac version) -unit does not work with FAT32 -i only use 2 channel sound and do not stream This box is great. If you were lucky enough to get one and have the chops to know how to use it, I doubt you will ever find something more useful for the money. Everyone that I talk to about it wants one. The unit and software is utilitarian, but the unit is easy enough to replace considering the drive is a sata. I was hoping someone would find or create firmware that would create a nicer GUI. I have never changed firmware. It was my intention coming back to the forum (and reading every post again) to see if firmware created any benefit. From what I can tell (for my uses) it has not. Unfortunately I do understand that most people with the money to buy a/v gear want something more refined. I know it has been a very long time, but if someone really wants to know if the units can share data between one another I will give it a shot. - blimey 11-06-08, 04:48 AM -some have better (quieter) fans than others (about 1 in 5 have a good fan). And yes, btwn the hard disk and fan -you know it is running. Is the good fan distinguishable from the bad one? Is it the same fan in both cases (mfg & model)? -after purchasing a 5 series Samsung 40" LCD figured out that even though dvi output works ok, it is MHO that component has a nicer/softer picture. Have you experimented with the contrast/brightness settings on the MSM? I've found that just adjusting by one notch here or there, in combination with some settings for that particular HDMI input on my Samsung 40 HDTV, really can make a huge improvement. -have purchased a popcorn hour and basically cannot stand it. (no power off, lame pata drive, no usb host) only saving grace is h264 I agree. But it appears that we are pretty much the only ones. The interface was just untenable for me. I sold my PCH on eBay. -approx. 1.5-3gig xvid rips are the sweet spot (depending on the content of the movie) Did you notice that xvid files >2gb don't handle transport controls as well (rev/fwd, 15sec skip, time seek, ect)? But for xvid files below 2gb in size all of this stuff works fine. -wireless is basically useless Yeah, I unsoldered the wireless cards and removed them. The Klegg website says 'firmware coming soon', but I wouldn't hold my breath. I'd wager that we are stuck with this firmware for the duration. But it is ok, because it is very functional. What sets the Klegg apart is that it stands alone well as an embedded consumer device that any consumer - tech savvy or not - can take to right away, like a DVD player. I've purchased a dozen various players, and this is the one I use. Although I'm awaiting the release of Mvix's 8635-based player any time now. Sportdeck 11-08-08, 08:39 AM Did Klegg go under? I can't get to their web site this morning. If so, that's a bad thing as this little device has some good potential. I got mine early last summer when Frys cut the price from $189 to $99. I initially installed a Seagate 500GB HD and quickly filled it up. This combo was also hot to the touch. I upgraded to a WD Green 1TB drive. The external case temp dropped by 11 degrees F from 110 to 99 when copying files or playing a video as measured by a digital thermometer. My fan is loud, but when I close the glass doors on my TV stand, it's usually ok. Wired and Wireless file transfers are toooo slow. Other than temporarily connecting my Laptop via USB has anyone come up with a throughput hack/improvement? When you guys say you are "streaming" to the Klegg, is (1) a server (MythTV, PC with VLC, XP or Vista Media Center, etc...) playing the video and the Klegg is displaying it, or (2) is a server storing the video and the Klegg is playing it over your network? I've got #2 working for video fomats I can play off of the internal HD. I'd like to get #1 working to be able to use something like VLC to send a "video stream" to the Klegg to display the output like a cable or IPTV settop box does. This would allow playing HiDef .mkv files without having to convert them etc... Overall it has been a good buy, but I'd love to get the long promised firmware upgrade if that included playing .mkv or other native HD file formats. Frys in Georgia still have these at $95 if anyone is looking for one. su_A_ve 11-17-08, 08:28 AM I have two one connected to component and one through DVI/HDMI. I can uprez and downrez in the MSM. I'm not sure I understand the problem. Tried playing one of the M$ samples at 1080p. My understanding is that it would downrez to my output (1080i or 720p), however that was not the case. The image output was only the top half of it it seemed (filling the full screen). Initially I thought the problem was with the DVI output or my TV's VGA input. However, when I rewired and did component, I still had the same issue. (TV is older and only supports up to 1080i). dangerdoc1 11-17-08, 01:34 PM Tried playing one of the M$ samples at 1080p. NTFS over USB was even slower. Mac's just don't like NTFS drives. -FAT32 is restricted to 32GB partitions and the MSM only reads the first partition, so it would be quite a waste. -I used to stream from my Mac in OS 10.4.10 but after updates this summer I can't get the MSM to see my Mac. I'd like to know if any Mac users still can stream to their MSM and what OS they're using. EMUzing 11-29-08, 09:37 PM God if this peice had some of the functions of popcorn hour or supported 3rd party plugins it would be awesome. From what i understand it has a capable arm processor...I just require more album art to be happy..I will get my pch soon and indtall my lil jukebox and hope all goes well bondi123 12-06-08, 01:27 PM On October 10, 2008 I order a Klegg MediaShare on the Klegg.com website for 120 dollar. Also made the payment by PayPal Till now (december 6, 2008) I never recieved the MediaShare. The last email about it was on October 24, 2008 with Dennis Gentles from Klegg Electronics who wrote me that he will ship the order. Because I hear nothing I asked my money back, but nothing. Over the years I bought several things in the USA online, always perfect and nice responce by email, but now ....... I´m somewhat disappointed in Klegg!! So guys WATCH OUT if you want to buy something from Klegg or Kleggusa, you can loose you´r money like me.:( -bondi123- tanzella 12-06-08, 04:27 PM On October 10, 2008 I order a Klegg MediaShare on the Klegg.com website for 120 dollar. I haven't had any luck getting anything useful out of the Klegg web site or any response to emails. I was lucky enough to find one at my local Fry's about 9 months ago for US$129. Fry's has a 30-day return policy - no questions asked. blimey 12-07-08, 11:34 PM Klegg might be on shaky financial ground. Their eBay account has a status of "not a registered user". http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=bigdaddyliquidators&ftab=AllFeedback They are a publicly traded company. It seems that they marketed to investors primarily and then just slapped their name on a few items from various OEMs, such as the MSM. This along with a few weird commercials starring the likes of Paula Abdul. bondi123 12-08-08, 07:15 AM I don't know if they are on a shaky financial ground, because on October 20, 2008 they acquire 100% of Pristine Preservation Group. But if their PayPal account has zip, you're SOL. bondi123 12-10-08, 12:51 PM Yes, I dispute the transaction with PayPal. They say that I am right, but there is no money on the account of Big Daddy Liquidators, Inc. (bigdaddy@pristinepreservation.com). I believe the only reaction of Dennis Gentles is silence...... :-( beekerc 12-12-08, 04:24 PM I just picked up one at Fry's last week for $90. I had not discovered this forum until now, largely to get help with my unit. I purchased it on the recommendation of my brother-in-law who raved about it, but is unable to help me troubleshoot it. first off. I too have tried to contact Klegg Electronics. My emails have been ignored. the investor relations number doesn't answer. two phone numbers were found in the Las Vegas phone book - one just rings, the other is out of service. I called one of their neighbors and they said that Klegg is still in the building, the same people are there, but their impression is that they have "changed their line of business" - I didn't press for details. I haven't looked up their stock symbol KLGG, but i would not be surprised if they are delisted. so it looks like this is the last bastion of hope for those who need help. I mainly got mine so i could distribute photos, mp3's and ISO's from a central server to any TV in the house. $100/pop to access a central media repository is a steal (if i can get it to work). I have not installed a hard drive, and most likely will not. I am using wired gigabit only. setting up the configuration and network was a breeze. I have established multiple shares on a server one for DVD ISO's, one for MP3's and one for pictures. in each share, I have given everyone Read share permission and both List & Read permissions in folder and file security. when I try and browse the network for shares (from the Klegg) I can see all the servers, but when I pick one, i can't see any of the shared folders. and sometimes i can see the machine name in the "address bar" of the Klegg screen and sometimes I can't. has anyone had any issues with accessing shared folders? if so, what did you do to make their contents show up? one last thing, I think the fan is horribly noisy. I too intended to unplug it since I'm not installing a hard drive, but it look like that road has already been traveled and may not be the best solution. Thanks B akira28 01-09-09, 02:52 PM My Information on the Klegg Media share. This a complete knowledge dump so sorry about the length. I purchased my unit from Fry’s electronics for $99 right before Christmas 2008. The unit itself is very basic looking and gloss black. The fan for the unit is very loud until you put a hard drive in it, which reduces the noise by 1/3. It’s still loud but not as bad There are some errors\misconceptions in the instructions and on the box. The unit is SATA (only) no IDE. You can not use the USB and Network at the same time without lock ups. The unit does not play mp4 The unit does not play .mvk The unit does not play HD content that is encoded with H.264 Newer codexes are not supported and result in the content freezing right after start and running without sound but only if you hit Fast Forward. It will.. Play ISO full DVD files Play the files in TS_VIDEO Select the IFO file to play the entire disk as if it were a normal dvd player Play Mp3’s and works very well Play 90% of Xvid AVI’s downloaded off your favorite ********** site. It will play DVD’s from an external USB DVD drive enclosure that does not require drivers. Display jpg files from your digital camera. My Setup I’m using a Seagate 1.5 Terabyte hard drive and it works as a single partition. With a hard drive it does run a little warm, but functions perfectly. The Hard drive must be formatted in a computer first then installed into the unit, if your smart you will transfer your large files to this drive before installing it into the Klegg, it will save you hours worth of transfer time. . I have mine networked (cat6) and I can transfer files from my PC to the unit. The transfer is pretty slow and takes about 3-4 minutes to move a 700meg file. The USB cord can be used to make it an external hard drive when the unit is disconnected from the network. This makes moving large (above 4 gig) files far more practical. You can play files over the network from the Klegg on your computer without interruption to a playing file on the Media Share. This is provided you are not using an ISO file in either operation. ISO files use a great deal of horsepower and the media share will chop and freeze. However you can play two different Xvid/AVI files simultaneously with no issues at all. I have not found a way around the crappy PC to Klegg (NDAS) software yet, but trust me it’s always on my mind. The transfer speeds are a little annoying when you have built a multimedia gigabit either network and run cables in the walls, just to have it slug about, but it works and that is the key to the brilliance of this device. Yes, there are negatives, but the Klegg Media Share actually does the job it’s supposed to and for $99 dollars. I will be trying to find a few more for friends and family in the next few months and with good cause, everyone I show the device to agrees that the very basic and rudimentary system is (once set up) easy enough for anyone. If it’s any indicator my five year old has already figured it out. It works and it looks absolutely great. Now Put a 1.5TB drive from New Egg ($120) in the sucker and you have a combination device that is potable enough to take to the grandparents place for the weekend and big enough to hold 300gig worth of MP3s + every movie and TV show you have downloaded in the last few months. (So far I’m up to 2,000+ files between 350meg TV shows and 2-4 gig movies). The key to using the space wisely is transcoding or downloading movies who’s content is worthy of the bitrates and display quality the Klegg is capable of. Now 90 minute movie files under 700megs are sometimes questionable and look blocky dependant upon the transcode method, but at, or above this point they still look very good on the Media Share. I used the opening text of Johnny Mnemonic to determine the best rate for scifi movies I encode and it came out that (baring HD content) 1.2-1.4 gig DVD to Xvid/AVI gives you the best bang for the buck. Example: Starwars: I just ISOed the disks 4-6 gig each Johnny Mnemonic 1.4 gig xvid/avi – Looks perfect and you could read the spines of books on shelves in the background with zoom its so good. Calendar Girls: 700megs xvid/avi – She couldn’t tell Diego’s Dinosaur Rescue: 700megs xvid/avi – Looked Perfect Total storage space 1.5TB or actual size 1,350 gig partition (approximately) That’s 1,800+- Full length Movies at 700 to 800meg. It’s a simple matter of deduction to speculate that you could fit a great deal more movies on your Klegg if you base your file sizes to match the content and the visual quality output of the media share. The wife’s Kleenex movies are simply not complex enough to require anything more then 700 to 900megs. The Child’s cartoon and Muppet movies are perfect at 700megs. If you’re looking to convert DVDs to files for your Klegg use the following free (and very simple) program. Auto Gordian Knot autogk.me.uk Use DVD-Decrypter or DVD Shrink to transfer the entire disc to your hard drive (Full back up) and then use Auto-Gordian to select the second IFO file in the TS_Video file. It took about 2 hours with a 3.4 Gighertz single core processor to generate the resulting xvid/avi file. But every file I have created with it has worked perfectly in the Klegg using the firmware the unit came with. Movies off the net in Xvid/AVI should be tested for playabilty using VLC media player. This is not to say you have to watch the entire movie, all you have to do is load the movie and see if the resulting AVI file plays without having to be repaired. If it starts and asks if you want to repair it hit yes and chances are it will work afterwards (90% chance). Networking Issues. My Unit will some times have a hard time auto assigning an IP address and will lock up after booting (you can tell because the unit will boot and the intro music will not play followed by hanging at a blank screen. To fix unplug it from the network, unplug the power, reboot it and manually set the IP to something a little out of the range of other devices that auto assign before putting it back on the network. Example if your router is 192.168.1.1, and Main PC assigns to .2 set the Klegg to .100 so that it will not conflict with laptops or other devices you plug in later. I found that one of my laptop PCs and the Klegg were both trying to auto assign to .3 at the same time and both connected (did the same thing with two different routers). By changing the Media Share to a fixed IP it solved the issue and runs fine after a reboot or shut down. Upload and download speeds are slightly dissimilar but are universally slow. I am able to play a file on my PC off of the mapped drive of the Media Share and transfer files from it to the PC 25% faster (from Klegg to PC) then from PC to Klegg. From reports I’ve been reading on the forums they indicate this is pretty universal. But thankfully it actually does work, which is a hell of a lot better then unplugging the unit from your entertainment center, trying to undo all the surround sound hookups and lugging it around the house to plug in the USB for a single movie. My unit will reliably except transfers in excess of 19 gig as long as you’re headed to bed. Watching a movie during the transfer doubles the transfer time unless you’re watching an ISO, in which case there are so few free cycles on the CPU that it will take days. I don’t use wireless RF network connections (at all) and remove the transmitters, so I have never tested that functionality. P.S. (/open Soap Box) and neither should you, to be honest, read the European news articles on the banning of wireless routers in public schools due to increased brain cancer and health effects of these devices.. Unless you actually think your kid is immune to the same radiation that has been proven to be screwing up kids in Brittan, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Switzerland, and the rest of the world. (/end Soap Box). In short use a wire it’s faster and safer. Audio outputs. I have played with Digital (single RCA) and Analog (multiple)RCA Output for this device and so far have not noticed a significant difference in quality. I have just picked up a fiber cable and will test with it, but in general the media share does a really good job with each method. For those of you going to set up your device to surround sound and have it somewhat portable, use the single RCA digital instead of hooking up L/R FR/FL/RL/RR and center, it will not only save you a ton of time but the sound quality is identical. A quick lesson on audio cables. It does not make a monkey’s butt worth of difference as to the quality of an RCA digital cable or fiberoptic plastic vs glass. The reason is that the signal is digital, a series of 1’s and 0’s either the signal arrives or it doesn’t, and in the case of fiber, either it passes the light or it doesn’t. With analog it does make a difference because different frequencies within the cable travel through the copper strands at different locations using the surface area and conductivity of the physical medium, bad cable or high loss, bad sound. With digital, frequency and modulation (volume) are irrelevant, beyond its ability to physically pass any relevant voltage or lightbeam. The digital receiver doesn’t care about anything but on and off and as long as it can see it it’s golden. So with that in mind before you go to Rat Shack or Fredmeyer to buy a cable please don’t listen to the minimum wage dufas trying to sell you the expensive ones. Buy any solidly built RCA or fiber cable (or get one out of the garage). Save the really nice set of gold plated RCAs for your analog stereo and speaker connections where it will matter. Just use any of those cheepy RCA cable you have been using to connect the VCR to the TV (Red, White or Yellow) and use the single strand as the digital to surround sound connection. It will make disconnecting the unit a breeze in comparison and make life simple with the same end result. Save your $50 for putting towards that terabyte drive. The Klegg Media share is a great device with potential. It’s easy to use and doesn’t have enough frills to get you into any trouble. It’s wired and wireless networkability, while slow, doesn’t completely suck and as a result it is everything it’s suppose to be for the price. Would I be happier if it displayed album cover art while playing mp3s, YES. But for 1/3 the price of it’s nearest competitor I can live with that. Would I be happier if the network speeds were faster, Heck YES, but it has multiple options, wired, wireless, USB in and out and it’s portable. So again for $99 bucks it has exceeded my expectations, the fact that it works – slow or not is great. Would I buy another, Yes, absolutely as long as the unit price did not go above $130. Will I ever find another, probably not ..LOL Akira28 akira28 01-09-09, 03:24 PM Oh, and just for grins.. My speculation is that Klegg doesn't actually "make" anything. they buy products from smaller compaies and vend them with their branding.Companies that make encoders and decoders don't typically make TV's because it doesn't allow employees to be shifted from one product line to another. Hence the lack of website and Emails. They bought the product line and sold it, once it's sold they will dump support because they will not make any more profit from the device in the future to warrent it (why bother they have their money). Legally they have to say that they are supporting it until the warrenty is up, but that's as easy as posting up the user manual to the website or giving you an email address that nobody actually reads (or answers 1 a day etc). The companies that purchased it from Klegg have the ball in this case, but no obligation to support anything without their branding on it. The product, while great and cheap will most likely not be brought back unless someone buys it from the companies that bought it from Klegg and upgade it .. Which again won't happen because the CPU isn't fast enough to handle MKV and H264 and Codex changes are never ending. If it did or atleast gave you an aplication to enter your own codex packs, heck I'd become a vender LOL.. Akira28 :-) racorby 01-10-09, 09:12 AM What a great post on the Klegg. I have one and found you right on. I actually really like the product. One recent use was to take it on a car trip and plug it into the car's DVD player...worked great. One of the big selling points to me was it's portability. Before I put the hard drive in, I used to stream to it. This worked OK over wireless - wired would be better. But I put the drive in for portability. But maybe you can help me with one thing I cannot get to work. I cannot connect to it from a PC using the NDAS software. I'm not near the unit now, but I recall you "add a device" and enter in two codes to identify it. It cannot find my device. Do you have any ideas on what to try? tanzella 01-10-09, 10:58 AM Hi, Did you go to the Ximeta web page and download the latest NDAS drivers? The included drivers are woefully out of date. That worked for me. bonapart 01-10-09, 08:51 PM Oh, and just for grins.. My speculation is that Klegg doesn't actually "make" anything. they buy products from smaller compaies and vend them with their branding. Yes, it was mentioned earlier in the thread that the Klegg has LX351-HD motherboard, which is the OEM motherboard for the Eureka/Zio LX351-HD. But the ultimate manufacturer is just some Chinese manufacturer, although the engineering and design work seems to be done in Korea. The same company designs Klegg/Eureka/Cibox/LaCie/Cinedisk/Novatron and more. See here for a list: http://www.station-drivers.com/page/novatron_36-67hd.htm Klegg really just seems to be a 'company' designed to be invested in. I realize all companies exist to make money, but they also actually do stuff. Klegg is now involved in other stuff outside of electronics. They seem to have abandoned the electronics branding entirely. All of that being said, I really like the Klegg. Mostly for its excellent DVD support. For HD mkv files, I just convert them to HD xvid with mkv2vob, and it works great. Since I use an internal drive, network issues are of no concern. I did drill a 50mm hole and mount a 60mm fan externally, so it runs cool and quiet. With the stock fan, it is just way too hot and noisy. That I like the Klegg the best, more than the popcorn hour or the WDTV, has more to do with how much most media players suck than how good the Klegg is. But I've tried the others, and have gone back to the Klegg each and every time. I'm looking forward to Mvix's new player, and may try it if it has good DVD support. It won't be less than $50 like my Klegg.. basementjack2 01-22-09, 10:11 PM I found that my Klegg doesn't play any MP3's I've purchased from Amazon. They are all 256k, non-protected. They play fine in my car, and also on my Xbox 360s' via the Tversity server pulling from the same files. I'll need to investigate the MP3's to see if there is something non-standard about them. basementjack2 01-22-09, 10:17 PM Hey as an FYI, I got the kleggs to work with Windows 2008 server - it took a few days of troubleshooting to iron out the details. While I don't remember everything I did, I'll recap the basics here, and if anyone needs more detail, send me a PM and I'll look at my machine and see what I did. - file sharing has to be enabled in 2008 - the guest account has to be enabled. - you have to set the NTFS file permissions on 2008 so that the guest account has read access. -initially I think that was all I needed. Later I turned my 2008 box into a domain controller and it killed off the kleggs again - they could see the server, and if memory serves, the list of directories, but not the files, or if they could 'see' the files they could not play them. I went in and change some security setting using the local security policy editor found in 'administrative tools', or I suppose becuase it was now a domain controller, I might have used the 'group policy editor' anyhow, lucky for me I had another server that was on the domain and the klegg worked with it fine, so I knew it had to be a setting that was specific to domain controllers - which it was - some setting that only applied to domain controllers. - don't remember what it is, I am sure I could look it up if there is a need. su_A_ve 02-11-09, 09:19 PM All of that being said, I really like the Klegg. What version and what settings are you using? tanzella 02-11-09, 10:46 PM I tried mkv2vob but the resulting mpeg file is not supported. Are you sure your not making a MPEG-4 file? The Klegg doesn't support any type of mp4 files. su_A_ve 02-12-09, 02:11 PM Are you sure your not making a MPEG-4 file? The Klegg doesn't support any type of mp4 files. I tried the default settings... Under video transcoding I have automatic, under Output file extension I have automatic, output file type automatic. Also tried using Use 448kbps AC3 and use old file format but no different. Also tried both MPEG2 Codec and XviD. The resulting files are mpeg and can play them in windows... The version is 2.4.3 which I believe is the latest... blimey 02-12-09, 07:39 PM How are you converting? So I got some HD trailers in mkv format via vuze. I tried mkv2vob but the resulting mpeg file is not supported. What version and what settings are you using? I convert to xvid using mkv2vob, as outlined in this mvix knowledge base article: http://www.mvixusa.com/support/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=107 After installing mkv2vob, but before running it, go into the mkv2vob/tools folder and run virtualdubmod. Accept the virtualdubmod agreement and exit. Then run mkv2vob. The agreement wasn't coming up when I ran mkv2vob directly, and it was never finishing. But since I ran virtualdubmod separately and accepted the agreement, it works. Basically the important settings for mkv2vob are 'always transcode', 'avi' and 'xvid'. su_A_ve 02-15-09, 10:58 AM Thanks for the settings - you must be using an older version as the latest does not have virtualdubmod in it's tools subdir. In any case, the changes to transcode/avi/xvid worked. However, the MMS is stretching 2:35 video, mostly HD trailers. Should be an option to maintain ratio? Or I would have to reencode the videos adding black bars I guess... Also, oddly, I get some jerkiness in the video when playing. I have it set at 720p and going via component cables. I have no problems with 480p (DVDs) which is mostly what I use it with... su_A_ve 03-22-09, 12:03 AM Duh... I flee dumb... I had the klegg set to stretch full instead of letterbox... kmurali70 04-05-09, 10:45 AM I bought the klegg mediashare and after 1 year, the USB drive cannot be recogonised on any computer I attach it to. Bob 05-19-09, 09:31 PM The www.kleggusa.com web site is now the site of the "Urban Tree Farm Nursery." What's up with that? su_A_ve 05-26-09, 10:10 AM Hello - Having issues with the transcoding using mkv2vob. If I use x264 (slow), the klegg does not recognize the file. Seems to only recognize xvid. But my problem is that the files are getting cut off. Ie it seems only about a minute gets transcoded. Any clues? su_A_ve 05-26-09, 11:45 AM Solved my own problem. Only XVid works - but version 2.4.4 and 2.4.5 have some sort of bug where the output xvid is cut short. Dug an old version 2.4.3 and works fine... blimey 05-27-09, 02:11 PM su_A_ve, thanks. Good to know. I'm using an even older version of mkv2vob. I've had trouble with newer versions. Bob: Urban Tree Farm Nursery? Anybody know if there are any alternative firmware updates available at all? I've never seen any updates and the units have been cleared out and I expect no further updates. On the upside, they seem to be reliable. zonex 07-13-09, 11:20 AM Thanks for the heads up on that DangerDock. Was hoping there may have been another update somewhere but ahhh well, its still working away fine though a bit more file support would have been nice. It would be nice to have MKV support but I don't download movies so it is not a deal breaker. Before my HD tuner on the computer broke, I recorded ATSC streams which the player played without a stutter. I have converted all of the kids movies to divx and put them on a 1 TB drive in the box. The ISO support is outstanding. The kids use the stink out of their player. Hours a day every day. I was concerned about reliability but so far so good. I picked up a back up unit for $40 when they were being cleared out but so far I have not needed it. bonapart 07-14-09, 08:02 AM The klegg mediashare is nice but was already very dated when introduced 18 months ago. The OEM of the klegg is novatron, and novatron made for lots of other names with this same design - which is essentially the Sigma 8620/8621 reference design. Firmware never went higher than 1.63 and the klegg version 1.60 is as good as any other. Since the processor in the klegg is the Sigma 8621, h.264 and other high demand codecs were never possible on the klegg. Klegg Electronics is more or less out of business now. Novatron's newest player, the novatron iamm NTD38HD (http://novatron.co.kr/new_2007/eng/index.php?m=2&s=1) is built on the older Sigma 8623, which is not as fully capable in full HD as the Sigma 8635 or newer. The novatron iamm NTD38HD is available as the Siso Markus-800 (http://hantech.ca/product/product_detail.asp?M=1&S=2&bCateName=MARKUS&CATEID=00020003) from hantech in Canada. It is a pretty nice player with h.264 support and has a fancy LCD, set-top controls, and a nice remote. It supports DTS passthrough, but not downmix. The GUI is exactly like on the Klegg MSM. As nice as the novatron iamm NTD38HD is, it is currently not strongly competitive (because of the weaker 8623 processor) unless you play only lower bitrate/reframe HD files. zonex 07-15-09, 06:18 AM Hi Bonapart, Hey man, thankyou for your insightful and near complete explantion. Though Klegg has bit the dust, still using it everyday without skipping a beat, well, maybe one or two here and there but happy nonetheless. Will save a bit more and get a 2nd unit somewhere but still wondering which one but will eventually work it out. Thanks again~! su_A_ve 07-19-09, 01:29 PM Mostly had been playing ISOs of archived DVDs from my NAS. Would love to have something with a decent interface as an AppleTV, or XBMC with album artwork but cannot complain after paying $30 for this. Would love to have album art or at least being able to make a playlist for music. The jukebox option allows you pick out songs, but what good is it if won't let you even save it. (then again, I don't have a drive on it, so can't tell if this is available when you have a drive on it). One night I googled enough that found a site where custom firmware was available, however, nothing done to improve the gui. Only shell access it seemed. BigDaddyM 07-21-09, 09:20 AM I purchased two of these units about one year ago, and the kids use them every day. I do not have internal HDs in them but do stream to them from a NAS. Overall, I have been VERY pleased with the performance of these boxes. A few days ago, one of the units just stopped booting. It powers up, does the little light dance, the red power light stays lit, but then nothing (no indication that it is connected to the network, or the green indicators for screen output or sound). The TV reports no signal being received. :( I opened up the unit, and could find no obvious issues (bulging capacitors, loose connections, etc.) I also swapped the two units to rule out connections and power supply. No joy. Is it possible that the firmware got corrupted? Or am I looking at something even more serious (burnt out chip)? Either way, I think I'm screwed. TIA for any suggestions.... bonapart 07-21-09, 05:48 PM Sounds like a hardware problem. But there is a firmware recovery process here (http://www.station-drivers.com/page/novatron_36-67hd.htm) (more specifically, here (http://www.station-drivers.com/telechargement/cibox/TFTP_Update(2).zip)). It requires setting up a tftp server. This probably won't fix it but you could try it before you throw the thing away. BigDaddyM 07-22-09, 07:42 PM Thanks so much for the info, Bonapart! I followed the instructions (pretty straight-forward and easy) and got all the expected feedback from the unit. At power-up, it now does the light dance and flashes a EUREKA splash screen for approx. 1 to 2 seconds and then...... nothing. I am going to box it up and keep monitoring this thread for more advice, but i think it may be time for an HD box anyway (WDTV, PCH, or eGreat). Thanks again for your help, and best of luck to everyone with their Klegg! bonapart 07-22-09, 08:27 PM Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot to mention a step. It has been over a year since I used the recovery process. The default firmware romfs.bin in the recovery package doesn't work with the Klegg, as I now seem to remember - but I don't remember exactly. What I do remember is that I had to try more than one firmware bin before I found one that worked. From this (http://www.station-drivers.com/page/novatron_36-67hd.htm#ntd35-36hd) section of the firmware page, download one of the 1.1.1.160 versions and rename the bin contained therein to romfs.bin and place it in the same directory as the original romfs.bin. Leave loader.bin as-is. BigDaddyM 07-22-09, 08:52 PM thanks again, Bonapart :) i downloaded the referenced firmware .zip file, but it unpacked a .pkg file, which seems to be associated with mac (i am using vista). i am having a hard time navigating the non-english web site, so any more help would be much appreciated :D monsalbus 07-24-09, 02:55 PM did you try hitting the TV/OUT button a few times, waiting a few seconds between each press? ferroman 02-07-10, 10:48 PM The ebay fairy brought me one of these a few days ago, but so far, not much luck. I went through the share exercise, as outline earlier, but I didn't see Network Share. Windows says my Music files are visible to the network. Why can't I see them on the Klegg? 2) I have an external 1 TB USB drive connected, now, with wireless disabled. The lights on the drive are flashing, as if activity is going on. With an internal drive installed, see if you can at least copy files to it via USB. ferroman 02-09-10, 08:29 PM Thanks, Blimey. I'll do that, but will probably be a day or two. My ext drive is still blinking. In a system that is working correctly, does the Klegg unit make a copy of the file names, addresses, etc. within it? The only reason to use the provided software is to get the NDAS working and it is SLOOOOOOW. If I remember correctly, it is pretty much plug and play except for NDAS (which for me was useless). Plug the USB cord in to load the hard drive. Unplug the USB, and play. All functions are controlable via the buttons on the front panel if you don't have a remote. I love mine, I have two.
