That's great. Where did you have that made? I would love to do a Cinemascope logo sign. One that would curve out from the wall attached to a half circle plate that would attach to the wall (made out of the same metal). I could then rig a backlight behind the lettering to cast a 3D shadow. I had a local guy, who is also a member here, take a stab at it. But, we couldn't find a usable Cinemascope logo for his metal shop to copy from. Lumpy69 02-01-08, 09:18 PM WarDrive off the forum here. Sent him a pic and he custom made it for me. Search him out. I upload the 8x10 photos to Walgreens website. They are perfectly fitted in Photoshop to 8x10 dimensions, however when printed there is a white edge all around. Because I cannot conceal this with the frame, it looks ugly. I already wasted two sets of 8x10 prints. Does anyone have suggestions as how to fix this? Many thanks! You may need to physically take your file to a printing kiosk at an in-store photo finishing joint. then work with their software to be sure you are getting 8x10 edgeless printing. They should have a preview ability so you can see what you will get. Try other stores that have other software/printers and ask for help. That way if it doesn't work you don't pay. I have been planing on making something like the top picture. Any hints or tricks in making one. Ben I lucked out with that one. A local video store went out of business last year and sold everything in the shop. This was one of a dozen wooden signs they had to mark the sections (drama, comedy, etc.). I painted it black, put an undercounter light fixture inside of it, and printed up the main marquee with a white bottom at fedex kinkos. The movie mylars are transparencies printed on my inkjet printer. They come out great and I can change them as often as I want. gamegod2x 02-06-08, 07:21 PM great thread and photos, lets see some more. puskarich 02-09-08, 03:02 PM Here be mine... http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2238/2107649224_be4425f37c.jpg?v=0 Robby-P 02-09-08, 04:51 PM The first one isnt so much DIY, but the other two are ones that I made. We need to have an AVS member meet at your house??? ;) Ron Robby-P 02-09-08, 09:27 PM Thanks for the compliments guys, I have a small CNC machine that helps me with the relief carvings and the rest of the parts are all made by hand on my router, no off the shelf moulding used. The counter top display has a pocket in the back that you slide the posters into, I bought a bunch of reproduction 11x14 posters and change them out from time to time. My inspiration was from an antique theatre lobby card display that my wife found looking around on the internet one night. Here is the original http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd122/soundgravy/MarqueeWithClock.jpg Here is a pic of it in the raw wood form. Poplar and MDF was used. http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd122/soundgravy/IMG_2916.jpg Sometime back I made a DVD sign for a member here that hung on the door. http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd122/soundgravy/dvdcase.jpg Robby-P 02-09-08, 09:32 PM Robby any construction details on that counter top display? it's a beauty. I can see one just like it in a different color in my space. Did you ever do anything with the Deco Guy I see in your album? I added some more details in my post above.... In regards to the Deco guy, I hope to have a poster case made up soon, this is the idea that I am going for, I hope I can get close to this as possible, the inspiration is from an old art deco building in New York, I took some of the features of the building and came up with this. This will probably be turned into a DVD storage case that fits inside the wall, with this poster front used as the door. By the way, your theater is wonderful! http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd122/soundgravy/decoposter.jpg MidLife 02-09-08, 09:45 PM So, the "Now Showing" is a computer router machine? You can choose a font like that with a router? That's pretty neat. Robby-P 02-09-08, 10:04 PM So, the "Now Showing" is a computer router machine? You can choose a font like that with a router? That's pretty neat. Yeah the whole center section was done on the machine, I design it in the software and the machine does the rest of the work, it cut the shape out, the opening, carved the letters, the side and the base I made myself. I can pretty much carve any font, pattern, really anything. Measures 8 feet wide by 11 inches high. Supported in the middle by an speaker bracket (attached via two toggle bolts) and tacked in all 4 corners into drywall anchors for added support. Gatorfoam letters are 8 inches tall and 3/4 inch thick. Painted black on the sides and with a brushed copper metal laminate. Gently lite up from the ceiling by a halo wall wash trim. I think it turned out pretty well. MidLife 03-25-08, 09:00 AM I love the lobby guys... where did you get em? They're called dancing snack people and I got them on the Internet. MidLife 03-25-08, 09:02 AM I Really like the Fog Valley letters. Do you get them at a craft or hobby store? BIGmouthinDC 03-25-08, 11:33 AM I Really like the Fog Valley letters. Do you get them at a craft or hobby store? Yes, that Fog Valley turned out great! I like the black sides on the gold letters and the fact he made an interesting curved backdrop. I also used the metal faced gator foam in one inch thickness, sides painted to match the surface. Here is another better lit shot of mine. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/DSC01335.jpg Metal faced gator foam letters are available at most commercial sign shops and from on-line sign vendors. BIGmouthinDC 03-25-08, 11:37 AM I think it turned out pretty well. Understatement of the year! it's perfect. Driving_Hamster 03-25-08, 02:12 PM I went back and forth on how to give the marquee some depth from the wall. I knew the letters themselves would have some depth to them but I was looking for something more. The method I decided on wasn't terribly too expensive or labor intensive. At least now my friends and family will know what I am talking about when I talk about the marquee. I used the explain it to people and get that blank "Uh huh" expression. The face of the letters are actually a brushed copper color, very similar in tone to the two sconces that flank them. For some reason they photograph more gold in color. Got them custom made at a local sign shop. Kept getting the run around and bait/switch on pricing from on-line vendors. MidLife 03-25-08, 02:58 PM very nice arbor oak and valley! :) sremick 03-27-08, 11:14 PM Ok so not a DIY/customized sign, but it's my only sign and I'm just so excited to have my projector on the way that I don't care if my setup is ghetto compared to the rest of yours. :D It's only a temporary mounting, as that wall is where the screen is going (and it'll take up pretty much the entire wall). I'll move it elsewhere and tack it up cleaner soon enough. mapleleaf14 03-28-08, 05:23 PM Nothing fancy here for sure, but I'm slowly building up my theater.
