View Full Version : Based on service alone, which projectors win out?
playboy1972 02-01-08, 06:31 PM Like I posted earlier, I am in the market for my first projector. I have noticed people state that service was one of the reasons they chose not to purchase a projector. Can you guys name some of the better service departments in the field. You may have to tell me what is good service is since I have no freakin idea what bad service is. :p
I hadn't heard that one before, but maybe I missed it. I haven't need service on any projector I've owned, but then again I don't run mine 10 hours a day. One thing for sure, you can carry in your projector to the service center, or even ship it, a lot easier than a big screen TV. :)
playboy1972 02-01-08, 08:11 PM The reason I ask is I purchased my DLP Samsung from a particular store and the service was cool but my set kept having problems. Just wanted some feedback about which stores were good with maintaining the projectors. Also wondered what was the most purchased extented warranties people normally buy.

Most times the service experience will be dual layer with a dealer and the manufacturer.
A good dealer with a good relationship to the manufacturer will provide great service potential. Some of the better PJ companies have their own service departments and some use contractors. If you are dealing with the PJ company itself then you should be able to contact specific named persons to deal with your model.
Its even possible that with a good dealer relationship if you have a dead unit you may get a replacement on the dealers say so.
The nature of the service will also be greatly determined by the type of PJcompany. Specialist PJ companies tend to be better in this area. Companies that deal in the commercial, professional and high-end consumer segments are almost always well ahead of the pack.
AS for specific names, I suggest you contact AVS for an honest appraisal.
Hope this helps.
Jason Turk 02-01-08, 08:17 PM Projectors are a bit different than TV's. 99% of the time, they ultimately have to go straight to the manufacturer for service (local shops usually can't repair them). Because of this, you really need to know about the manufacturers more than the local shops.

I clarified my post. I forgot to precede "company" with "PJ" a couple of times.
As for knowing who are the bad manufacturers...........God forbid anyone should yank that chain in public:eek::eek:
frank456 02-01-08, 08:56 PM I know but dare not say.:D
Jason is 100% correct. Projectors actually sent to a manufacturer get diverted to facilities which have contracts with them. The manufacturers rarely handle the units themselves. That keeps me working.;)
Just for the record: It is very rare to have a company like AVS which exchanges projectors if the customer is not happy with it. I know because I see the 'Dark Side':D of this business. I am not saying this to win any brownie points. Just fact. Service is VERY important.
Support AVS - Support the forum.;)

That is not correct in the case of JVC, all HD1/100 and RS1/2 models are serviced by JVC techs at our Cypress, CA service facility and a 72 hour turnaround is guaranteed.
Cheers,

Doh!
Tom is also correct...many manufacturers don't send them out to service facilities (JVC, Sim2, etc...). But the main point is that local places don't fix them...they have to be sent somewhere (unless of course you live near one of those facilities). :)
mrlittlejeans 02-02-08, 03:31 AM Interesting. Frank said in another thread that he sees proportionately far more rs-1's than sharps. Why are they going to his company if they are serviced by jvc?
