View Full Version : Microsoft says 360 Elite is just so hot right now, no SKU changes planned

Naturally curious as to why Xbox 360 Elites are so difficult to find, we went straight to the source -- and Microsoft tells us that demand is simply outstripping supply on the 360 Elite right now, and that no model lineup changes are planned at this time -- especially since the Elite is their hot seller. Well, so much for that conspiracy

Looks like our friends up in Redmond have finally learned something from the Sony and Nintendo camps.
Create a device, limit its distribution, and spin it up as "We just can't keep up with demand, they are white hot!!!"
Bravo, little beavers, Bravo! :D

bingo, but all three are guilty of this practice.

Dunno what you're talking about, the Wii actually is limited in it's distribution. Look at it's sales, when's the last time Nintendo had a console that was selling 1.3 million consoles a month? You think they were prepared for that?

a christmas time shortage is totally believable, but in the long run, there really is no excuse for demand>supply unless demand is accelerating or resources are limited, which i don't think is the case. Nintendo has had more than a year to adjust production. in that time they could have bought out several factories and converted them for Wii's. remember as a console it's not technologically advanced, so it should be the easiest of the 3 to make. the shortage, at least for nintendo, is probably a way of controlling their market.

Nintendo has no reason to limit production of the Wii, it's estimated they've lost about a billion dollars so far on Wii's they haven't sold because they haven't been able to keep them on shelves. Increasing production isn't a simple thing, they have to go through the process of buying the factories and setting up production facilities. Also what does Nintendo do if they double their means of production and all of sudden demand starts to taper off? Creating new production facilities is expensive and that's quite a gamble.
Like I said they're pumping out 1.3 millions Wiis a month, old tech or no that's an impressive number. The demand is just incredibly freakin high because it's not just gamers who want one anymore, it's gamers and millions of non-gamers who think it looks nifty.
257Tony 02-03-08, 01:11 AM So is the Elite as hott as "Hansel"? Because he is so hott right now!

nintendo did this with the game cube. wii on the other hand is selling gang busters in usa/europe. japan....not so much. to a extent, their doing this with the wii as well. making press statements they won't have enough units, so you better " buy now". they had a one day pre-order deal at gamestop and told everyone to expect to get it a couple of months later. guess what? everyone got theirs the same or next month. btw...why are we discussing nintendo sales? =p

Only until "Magnum" is ready to be unveiled. Once that happens, the Elite will be on more of a "Le Tigre" or "Blue Steel" level.

"That Hansel is so hot right now...Hansel". lol.
Anyways, Im sure the statement about the Elite being so hot right now has some exaggeration in it, its probably at least partially true. Even the regular 360 is much more sparse in stores than it used to be. At least at the local BB's here.
