View Full Version : BB Store extended warranty worth it?
WalksInDarkness 02-03-08, 01:51 PM Hi All,
What is you opinion, is the store extended warranty worth it? When I picked up my new X360 last night at Best Buy, I got the extended 2 year in-store warranty; it seemed like a good deal @ ~$60, since the 360 has the infamous RROD issues. It looks like I got a fresh of the truck one, as they had just put a whole palette of them on the floor; so I am guessing it ha the latest parts in it. My only question is: if mine craps out next year, and they change the model to a "better" set of options, will they give me the next highest equivalent; or will they try to screw me, and tell me mine has to be serviced?
Has anyone done the BB warranty, and have you had good experiences?
Thanks in advance!
mboojigga 02-03-08, 04:18 PM For one thing it isn't an extended warranty it is a Replacment Plan.
You have the standard warranty that you have with MS and then the 3 year RROD coverage also.
Your "Replacement plan" gives you the convience to go to any Best Buy store and get a new system if your system craps out for whatever reason.
It isn't a difficult process. As long as you don't physically abuse your system then you won't have any problems with getting a new system if that becomes the case.
Understand that when you do get a new system you will have lost the remaining years on the replacement plan and for the new system you will have to repurchase the plan.

Hmm, that losing the "remaining" warranty seems kinda sleazy. I guess it is a gamble. Maybe I should have skipped it, since I hear the new stuff is supposedly more reliable. I just would really hate to be without for more than a few days, since gaming is one of the few "quality time" activities I get with my kids.
Nice ride, that thing got the HEMI? Those rims wouldn't last one year up here in pothole land, up here in MA they could swallow a small car.
I like the smarmy screen-name ;)

Nothing really sleazy about it. No one hopes to lose their system in 1 year. But if you are out of the 1 year warranty and lets say your disc drive fails then you can't send it to MS for a refurb or repair with out paying extra money vs driving to your nearest BB and replacing it on the spot. So it really comes down to how long you want to be without your system.

Thanks and yes it has the HEMI. They built new streets all over the city so no concerns about potholes

Only if it is over the 1 year full warranty from Microsoft, otherwise the remainder carries over.

It isn't an extended warranty, it is a replacement plan. You just got a replacement, so the plan fulfilled itself.
buckeye1 02-04-08, 09:38 AM If your 360 dies in the first year they will replace it and your plan stays in effect for the remainder of the 2 years.
If it fails after the first year, you will get a replacement, but, you have to buy another plan if you want it(plan will be good for 2 years from purchase date).
If it fails and you want a "better" model, you must pay the difference between the "better" model and your model. Doing this requires a new replacement plan purchase.
I have used it twice on a 360 with good results.
The Negative: If the system is not in stock, you either have to wait for one to come in or get a card for you purchase price. Had this happen on my Wii. Fought the battle for a replacement for two weeks and gave up. I was not going to stand in line again for a replacement Wii and they would not hold one from an upcoming shipment for me. I finally figured out what was wrong and bought replacement part online.
So, if the product is in stock, it is ok. If it is a high demand item, could be problems. If you bought an elite, that may be a hard to find item.
Caswell 02-04-08, 09:51 AM I went with the Best Buy plan over the MS extended warranty ($50 for two years on all failures) because the last thing I want is a MS refurb.
Reading various gaming forums (here, NeoGAF, IGN, CAG, etc) it seems like there are two kinds of 360 owners: those on their original unit and those stuck returning refurbs over and over.
On top of that, it seems that MS sends you a refurb of whatever revision you had. If you had a non-HDMI Xenon, that's what you're getting a refurb. The nice thing about the replacement plan is that if your original goes bad you get the latest and greatest.
LandShark22 02-04-08, 10:24 AM Extended warranty plans in general are not a good deal. They are awesome money makers for the stores which is why they push them so hard. Anything that is a great deal for the store is a bad deal for you, by definition.
But in the specific case of the 360, with the unreliability and the inconvenience of getting a replacement, it's probably worth it for most people. However the best deal of all is to buy it from Sam's or Costco where you can get a replacement without having to pay extra for the "warranty"
maximuslcd 02-04-08, 10:42 AM I purchased my 360 through EB games and purchased a 1 year warr, after 10 months I had a disc drive failure, took the hard drive off and took the console to the store and they got a brand new one out of the box and gave it to me, I then purchased another 1 year warr, I'd say its a safe bet to get it with the 360 but it is a 1 use warr.
I just purchased a ps3 from BB and reluctantly I got their 2 year warr for it. Much easier to take it back to a store and get a new one on the spot instead of mailing them off.

If we weren't able to pass a large chunk of the broken 360's off to Microsoft and 3rd parties, it wouldn't be good for us either. In the case of the 360 (which I love mine), it is a win-win.
JudgeSmails 02-04-08, 09:59 PM I rail against extended warranties every chance I get...except here. YES YES YES YES! After my launch console crapped out on day one I picked up the BB replacement plan/warranty. Since then I've used it to replace a RROD with an Elite (just paid the difference). Worked like a champ. No calls, no coffins, nothing. Just a quick trip to my local BB and a new, working machine (with 2 games included) 20 mins later.
It's good to hear that BB is replacing them on the spot. I got my 360 in November '06 at Circuit City (What was I thinking?) and got the 2 year "Advantage Plan". Well the 360 crapped out 1st week of January(RROD) this year. Bought it to Circuit City thinking it wouldn't be a problem but I was referred to a phone number instead even after making a big stink and arguing with the manager for what seemed like forever. I guess they don't replace them in store anymore. So called the number I did and argued some more with the guy on the other line. He said that they may just fix my 360 instead of giving me a new one. At which point a promptly lost it and unloaded on the guy (kind of feel bad about it now:o). So long story short I sent my dead 360 to them and 3 weeks later I got a gift card for the full price of the 360 when I bought it. Advantage plan my ass! Now if I can only use this gift card to buy a new 360 @ BB and get their replacement plan I'd be all set:D
