Sorry, noob question - What is the best location for the colorimeter to take a reading from a front projector? Sensor facing the lens or reflection off the screen? And then from what distance?
I assume taking it off the screen would be more accurate as it would take into account the screen itself, but should I place the colorimeter all the way back at seating position or closer to the screen?

It add to sunol's question does this also depend on the colorimeter model ?

Depending on the software and hardware you're using, you can take a 100IRE reading from the screen, and then take a 100IRE reading directly from the projector & use the screen measurement as an offset. Then you can take all readings from the pj and they will be offset as if they were taken from the screen. Not all software has that facility though. As Dazzer has said, not all probes are suitable for screen measures but a spectroradiometer like the Gretag i1 Pro is meant to be used that way. Try the probe you have and see what results you get.

You will often find taking readings from the screen will run into trouble at lower IREs due to low light issues with the probe and get errors in the readings. If the room isn't a big influence and there is little colour shift in the screen, you can get good results taking readings directly from the projector with the probe just a few feet away.

You can take reading from the pj at ay 80IRE and then at the screen and see what the differences are. Calibrate the pj at 80IRE for D65 and then calibrate the screen reading at D65 and see if there is a visible difference. The software should be able to tell you the dE of the screen compared to the pj as well so you'll know if the difference is perceptible or not. You can do it at 90 or 100 IRE for better results (due to more light) but often at higher IRES it can sometimes be less obvious that there are differences, so a slightly lower IRE may be better.

What probe are you using?

Thanks! I will be using an i1 Display LT. I am using an IN76 projector, but I have an RS-1 and the meter coming this week.

I had the same question with "sunol"
I have a panasonic 700 pj and the i1 display 2 probe. My software will be the HCFR.
I thought that it would be more wise to take measures from the screen reflection because this is what our eye can see.
