View Full Version : HL2 Ep 2 rendering glitches

I've been noticing these weird glitches in my game ever since I emerged from the antlion tunnels.

Occasionally one of the large rocks in the open areas renders with weird textures...the surface looks like a multicolored mosaic, as if it was graffiti-covered or something (although the colors are in a checkerboard-ish pattern). I just thought this was just a rare hiccup, but last night, just as you drive the car into the radio tower outpost, I noticed that it was getting more frequent and now some of the downed trees were rendering the same weird way.

I had to quit for the night anyway so I shut down and haven't played since, so I don't know if it was just a one time thing or if it's a known issue..or something more sinister (cue evil laughter). Other than this little issue everthing's run just fine, no lockups or anything.

It's worth noting that my box just got back from RROD repair at Chez Microsoft, but it's been working just fine so far.

Never noticed this on my copy.

I didn't have those issues either.

Sounds like an overheating issue. Be sure it's properly ventilated and it's not common that a replacement console sent from the repair center turns out to be a dud. I've gone through a total of 5 within the past year and half. Usually when I get a system back from the repair center, I run a series of stress tests. Long hours of play and from what I've read in the past Dead Rising has problems running on some 360s so I make sure that's in there as well. Also just about any 360 game using the Unreal engine.

Overheating. Are you withiin the first year? If so call them now, else pray for RRoD.

I just beat Episode 2 and didn't notice this however I have noticed it in Oblivion when I played it for around a couple of hours so more than likely it's an overheating issue.

I was thinking GPU overheating issues myself, but it's running in a cool basement on a wire shelf, with a fan blowing into the intake side. The airflow out of the back is lukewarm. The box is just fresh back from a RROD repair (I got my original box back, not another refurb).

This of course means nothing in the World of Microsoft's 360, so it still could be a heat issue. The box has otherwise been working great...no freezes, crashes or anything else.

*shrug* Hopefully it was just a glitch and won't repeat itself next time I play.

...hopefully.

I would actually lean toward a drive issue. The textures for those items aren't loading up properly, and instead of hard crashing, HL2 is just rendering the scene without the textures for the rocks or trees.

you mean first 3 years

and it sounds like it is overheating remember when the 360 first came out some racing game had this problem the graphics would fall of fthe screen and other stuff like that

the GPU is probably overheating just because you just got it back is a good clue that it is overheating MS has been knows for returning 360's that are just about to break I have sent mine in 6 times since the launch date in the beginning 2 times for a DVD drive not reading and then the RROD 4 times after that finially I got a new 360 with the updated heat sink but not hte newer CPU so I will sent it back for that in a year when the warranty is up I got a new warranty with the new 360 I got from MS

It's funny you should say that. I was just reading about a similar issue with texture loading caused by a bad copy of a game. I wonder if my copy is just defective? I think I may borrow a co-worker's game to try out tomorrow.

If it turns out my copy is bad...I'm naturally well beyond exchanging the game, seeing as I got it when it came out.:(

EDIT: I think texture loading may indeed be the problem. After doing a search on "texture loading issues" rather than what i was trying before I found several instances of people with the exact same symptoms as me.

Here's a really extreme example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYP2ACLlmXU&feature=related

His was really bad; mine just has some of those mosaic textures in random spots.

So...it could still be the drive (I hope not), it could be a bad copy (mine's worked great all through HL, HL EP1, Portal and TF2, however) or I just may be able to clear the cache the next time I boot and see if that fixes things.

Fingers crossed!

No I mean one year, they will not cover anything that is not a RRoD beyond a year. So if you get glitches, you can only live with it until you get a RRoD if you are past one year.

FYI to follow up on this.

Clearing the temp cache (holding down the A button while game initially loads) seemed to fix the texture load issue. Played for a couple of hours last night with no problems.
